GameStop is extending an olive branch to customers who bought copies of “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” after its employees were told to remove an OnLive coupon from the game’s boxes.
The company is now offering a $50 coupon and a “buy one, get one free” coupon on used games to any customer who bought a copy of the game from which the OnLive coupon had been removed.
As 1UP reported, the company apologized to its customers in an e-mail.
“We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor’s offer. We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.”
The coupon included in the box allowed customers access to a digital copy of the game on the online gaming service OnLive, at a $49.95 value. GameStop recently announced plans to launch a competing service.
With the deal, GameStop comes out of this smelling like roses and still managing not to give customers a free pass to a competitor. Well-played.
