Bella The Dog Dies; Tarra The Elephant Mourns At Tennessee Sanctuary (VIDEO)

Tragedy struck a pair of unlikely friends who had captured the hearts of caretakers and animal lovers.
Tarra the elephant and Bella the dog began their friendship at The Elephant Sanctuary In Tennessee about eight years ago, according to CBS. Last week, Bella was believed to have been attacked by coyotes and died, leaving Tarra to mourn the loss of her best friend.
Bella and Tarra played and ate together, and often had sleepovers in a barn, according to the Leavenworth Times.
Sanctuary caretakers believe Tarra found Bella's body after the attack and carried her to the spot they often spent time together.
"The idea that she couldn't leave that body and brought it back home is just heartbreaking, but so inspiring," Robert Atikinson, CEO of the Elephant Sanctuary, told Nashville's WKRN News 2.
Once, when Bella suffered a severe spinal cord injury, Tarra patiently waited for her friend's recovery. CBS detailed the moments in a 2010 story:
For three weeks the elephant held vigil: 2,700 acres to roam free, and Tarra just stood in the corner, beside a gate, right outside that sanctuary office...
Then one day, sanctuary co-founder Scott Blais carried Bella onto the balcony so she and Tarra could at least see each other.
"Bella's tail started wagging. And we had no choice but bring Bella down to see Tarra," Blais says.
Bella was first spotted at the sanctuary in the fall of 2003, and died on October 26, 2011. The Elephant Sanctuary set up a tribute page in honor of the deceased canine.

A hole in the universe: Mourning the loss of Bella
.
Bonnie Snider
Animal Advocacy Examiner
November 5, 2011.
Advocates everywhere have been feeling the loss of Bella, the little dog who was the beloved best friend of the elephant, Tarra. It's as if there's a hole in the universe where Bella had been, and our hearts have turned to Tarra.
Tarra and Bella taught the world so much. They personified the example that all human beings should follow; that it matters not the color of your skin, your appearance, your beliefs, your background or anything else. What matters is your heart. Being allowed to have small views into the friendship of these two entirely unlikely friends was such a rare privilege.
Their friendship was a gift to both of them as well as to the world - Tarra, once a performing elephant whose guardian (Carol Buckley) had co-founded The Elephant Sanctuary in Howenwald, TN and Bella, a stray dog who had wandered onto the grounds there and decided to make it her home. Both considered by most standards to be "damaged goods", they'd known hard lives before finding each other. But in their friendship they found something so very precious – true and abiding love and devotion.
It's hard to put into words the sorrow that Bella's untimely death has brought to the advocacy community. We watched them with amazement and admiration. They brought smiles and light into the darkness that advocates see every day.
In the maze of all of the cruelty, brutality and sickening things that go on between humans and animals around the world, they were a refuge of joy and beauty. They gave us hope. They were the living, breathing examples of second chances, unbiased acceptance and unconditional love.
Tarra's final act of love for her friend in carrying her broken body to the spot they shared together most, making certain she would be found and not just lie where she'd been attacked was so inspiring. She loved her friend so much and her grief must be unfathomable.
The latest update from The Elephant Sanctuary pieces together Bella's final days. We can only try to imagine what Tarra felt or still feels.
Tarra stayed away from the burial ceremony by the humans, watching that from afar. Just as she had brought home her fallen friend's body while alone in the night, again in the privacy of darkness she had her own time of honoring her friend at her grave. The quote from this update speaks volumes:
"The following day, Caregivers made the heartbreaking discovery that Tarra had gone to visit Bella's grave sometime during the night or early morning. They found fresh dung nearby and an elephant foot print directly on Bella's grave."
Just as we can picture Tarra carrying Bella that night, so can we picture her standing on the grave of her beloved friend, as if for one final belly rub that Bella loved so much from Tarra. It was the final goodbye from an amazing and devoted friend.
The friendship of Tarra and Bella will be one that won't soon be forgotten. Their story will be emblazoned into the hearts of people everywhere - the sanctuary elephant and the stray dog; a friendship that defied conventional beliefs and inspired others to open their hearts to all beings.
Our hearts are with Tarra as she moves forward now. But we also know that Bella's spirit will forever be dancing in Tarra's heart and the love from that special friendship will never die.

Tarra and Bella: Elephant loses man's best friend
By
Steve HartmanPlay CBS News Video
(CBS News).
HOHENWALD, Tenn. -
In 2009, CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman introduced you to a couple of very unlikely friends who couldn't have been more different. But from the moment Tarra the elephant met Bella the dog, they were inseparable.
The Elephant Sanctuary south of Nashville is more than 2,000 acres of freedom for elephants. But for a resident named Tarra, there's not enough room in Tennessee to escape the bad news she got last week.
(Scroll down to watch the original videos)
"Certainly her whole demeanor changed," said Rob Atkinson, the sanctuary's CEO. "She became more reserved, quieter, she was depressed."
Pictures: Unlikely friendship of Tarra and Bella
Tarra displayed all the symptoms you'd expect to see in someone who lost a good friend - which is exactly what happened.
For nearly a decade, Tarra had been best friends with a dog named Bella, a mutt who wandered onto the sanctuary grounds and into the heart of the gentle giant. Tarra clearly loved her little dog and Bella obviously bonded right back.
Watch the original video
They were so close, in fact, that when Bella got injured a few years ago and had to spend three weeks recuperating in the sanctuary office, guess who held vigil the entire time? Twenty-two hundred acres to roam free, and Tarra just stood in the corner waiting. Home video of their reunion shows how inseparable they'd become and remained, right to the end.
Last week, sanctuary workers found Bella's body. By all indications she'd been attacked by coyotes. Whether Tarra witnessed it, tried to intervene or was too late - no one knows. All they do know is that where they found Bella is not where she was attacked.
"When I looked around and saw there was no signs of an attack here. No blood, no tuffs of hair, nothing," said director of elephant husbandry, Steve Smith. "And Tarra, on the underside of her trunk, had blood - as if she picked up the body.
Watch the second Tarra and Bella video
Tarra moved her?
"Tarra moved her," Smith said.
Steve's theory is Tarra carried Bella possibly a mile or more to bring her home.
Whether it really happened that way or not, no one doubts Tarra was that devoted.
"There's nothing we can do to take away her pain," said Atkinson. "The only ones who can help now are the elephants. And that is already happening."
Atkinson said the elephants are "stepping in and stepping up." He said they're spending more time with Tarra and being extra nice - making gestures like giving her a portion of their food.
Of course, anyone who's lost a dog knows you can't eat your way out of the grief - as much we might try -- but still nice to know at least Tarra's not alone in this.
It's also nice to see that compassion is much more than just human.

Imagine...a dog and an elephant can have an eight year relationship based in care and nurture...they are an example of how creatures as different as they, can accomplish what those of us of the same species cannot...it speaks volumes about us.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When Humphrey died he was especially close to Angus (his brother) so he went to Rainbow Bridge where there are meadows and hills for Humphrey and Bella to run and play. There is food, water and sunshine, and they are warm and comfortable.
Humphrey and Bella were restored to health and vigor. Those (like Bella) who were injured or hurt are made whole again, just as we remember them in our dreams. Humphrey and Bella are content, except that they each miss someone special, someone who was left behind.
They play together until one day when they suddenly stop and look into the distance. Their bright eyes are intent, and their bodies quiver as they fly over the grass, their legs carrying them faster and faster.
Angus and Tarra have been spotted, and when they meet, they cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain on Angus' and Tarras' faces, and they romp together in the grass, so long gone from each others' lives but never forgotten. Then they cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee...

We Say Goodbye to Bella, Tarra's Little Dog
2011-10-28.
My dear friends,
I write to you with very sad news. Tarra's little dog Bella has died. We found her body on Wednesday and have been dealing with the aftermath ever since, trying to work out what happened while we look after Tarra and each other.
We noticed Bella was not with Tarra at breakfast on Tuesday and later that morning she still had not appeared. Tarra and Bella have always spent short periods apart as one goes off exploring briefly on their own, but this longer absence worried us deeply and a search of the property was started which continued into the next day. The search ended tragically when Bella's body was found close to the Asia barn that had long been home to Tarra, her five sisters and Bella. During the time of the search our usually social Tarra chose to remain alone, watched over by concerned Caregivers.
Dr. Scott, our vet of sixteen years, examined Bella for the last time and, with advice from the experts from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, determined the probable cause of death was an attack by animals, most likely coyotes. We have sent off samples to see whether there were any other contributory causes.
Having carefully examined Bella's wounds and the place where she was found, we concluded that Bella had not been attacked near where she was found and neither could she have walked there.
As these investigations were taking place observant Caregivers, even more watchful of Tarra than usual, noticed blood on the underside of her trunk, evidence that pointed us in the direction of what likely happened that fateful night.
The most probable scenario is that during the night Bella strayed from Tarra briefly and was set upon. Tarra arrived too late to save her but was able to stop further damage being done to Bella's body. With deep sadness and deeper wonder we come to comprehend what likely happened next—that Tarra picked Bella up and carried her home.
Further evidence in support of our belief for what happened comes from Tarra herself. After Bella had been found, Caregivers ensured Tarra had every chance to inspect Bella's body before it was buried and to come to terms with her death, as this is an important part of the grieving process for elephants. But Tarra was not interested in either Bella or the group of Caregivers who would normally have drawn our inquisitive Girl to see what was happening.
It was only later when we had pieced together the whole picture that Tarra's behavior at Bella's grave made sense. Our poor, brave, loving Girl knew what had happened to her beloved Bella and, in the dark hours of the night as she carried her body home, had come to terms with her death.
Tarra's sisters will help her through her sadness. Although we cannot take away Tarra's pain immediately or the pain of all those that knew Bella, I do know Bella knew true love and true freedom. It will always be so for animals that find Sanctuary.
CEO
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
We are very concerned for Tarra and the grief she must feel at the loss of Bella. Caregivers are carefully monitoring her during her time of mourning. She still has a healthy appetite, and we are sure she will lean on the support of her elephant sisters, especially Shirley, during this difficult time.
She appears to be doing remarkably well under the circumstances, and we will, of course, keep you informed through updates in the Asian Ele-Diary and in Ele-Notes.
We invite you to visit Bella’s Tribute page, where we’ve shared some memories of the time she spent with us at The Sanctuary, and also read the press release that was just issued.
“Bella, you will live on forever in our hearts. Don't worry, we will continue to look after Tarra, just as you looked after each other.” The Elephant Sanctuary Staff
Memories like these make us smile through our sadness….

Elephant Tarra Mourns Bella the Dog

Elephant Tarra Mourns Bella the Dog
.
You may have heard about the odd couple in Tennessee. Yes, the YouTube sensation from a few years ago that seemed to keep re-entering your inbox from everyone who knows your email address.
Bella, a stray dog and Tarra, a retired Asian elephant who live at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee became best buds. They were considered inseparable. They played together, ate together and slept together. Their level of love and trust was something to behold.
That special bond was tested when Bella suffered a spinal cord injury a couple years ago. Not able to walk, Bella was living inside the sanctuary office. Tarra stood vigil outside for three weeks. Staff finally carried Bella outside for Tarra to see. It seems the unconditional love and dedicated caring helped Bella get better.
Watch Tarra lovingly rub Bella’s belly in a CBS follow-up video. Trust like that is a rare sight to behold. Eventually Bella improved and returned to her residence with Tarra and continued to frolic among the 2,700 acres of wooded land with her BFF.
.
Sad news was reported on Friday by The Elephant Sanctuary. Bella is dead; the presumed victim of a coyote attack. “As soon as we realized Bella was missing on Tuesday morning, the staff launched a Sanctuary-wide search, which continued into the next day. Late Wednesday morning, Bella’s body was discovered close to the barn Tarra shares with Bella and five other elephants,” states Steve Smith, Director of Elephant Husbandry.
Robert Atkinson, CEO of The Elephant Sanctuary, wrote a heartfelt Goodbye to Bella. In it, he explains where Bella was finally found and why they believe Tarra was the one to initially find Bella and carry her back.
The extent of Bella’s wounds and the relative order at the site where she was found has the sanctuary personnel concluding Bella was moved there. This assumption was further confirmed when blood was spotted on Tarra’s trunk and her seemingly disinterested behavior. It is thought Tarra may have come across the animal attack on Bella and saved her from being completely devoured.
Staff are giving extra attention to Tarra in her time of grieving. Elephants are similar to humans in how they develop bonds with family and friends. Because of this, they mourn in much the same way, as well. A sister elephant, Shirley, seems to be especially compassionate toward Tarra.
To honor Bella, you can participate in her tribute page. Rest in Peace, little Bella. You lived your life as an example to all.

I just can't seem to deal with this particular sad news. I'm extremely overwhelmed, and my sadness is selfish, as well as directed at both Bella and Tarra. I'm sorry Bella lost her life in such a frightening way. And I'm immensely sorry for darling Tarra, who never, ever gave up on her little, precious friend.
This has really hit me hard.
