The 25,630 Year Grand Cycle of the Mayan Calendar:

Do the Five B’aktuns of the Long Count Tell the Story of Man in America?

[This is my own interpretation from 30 years of interest and participation.]


The Mayan Calendar “Grand Cycle” began 23,618 B.C. and ends 2012 A.D. It is comprised of five "Great Cycles" of 5,126 years called “B’aktuns” (cyclic ages).

Interestingly these five B’aktuns correspond to the five archaeological ages attributed to the history of humans in America going back over 20,000 years according to recent findings at sites such as Meadowcroft Rockshelter in SW Pennsylvania -- “the earliest indisputably dated archaeological site in North America.”*

The First B’aktun began 25,630 years ago and is known as the age of the “Word People” according to Popol Vuh, sacred text of the K‘iche‘ Maya. This period corresponds to the appearance of man in America. This period is called the “Pioneer Age” by archeologists and is associated with the development of language.

The Second B’aktun began 20,504 years ago, known as the age of the “Mud People.” Archaeologists classify this period as the “Sandia Age” -- the peak of the last Ice Age.

The Third B’aktun began 15,378 years ago, the age of the “Wood People.” This corresponds to the archaeological “Clovis Age” with the appearance of the “atlatl” -- long wooden spears with elaborately flaked flint tips characteristic of Clovis Man in the American Southwest.

The Fourth B’aktun began 10,252 years ago, the age of the “Corn People.” Archaeologists classify this period as the “Archaic Age” corresponding to the end of the last Ice Age and the beginning of agriculture.**

The Fifth B’aktun began 5,126 years ago on August 11, 3114 B.C. and ends December 21, 2012. This fifth B’aktun is the age of the “Movement People” of the Popol Vuh and coresponds with the Modern Age.***

The Winter Solstice of 2012 CE (65.0.0.0.0.0 B’altun in the Mayan Grand Cycle) is the culmination of 25,630 years of human history in America. And also, not accidentally, one full Precession of the Equinox.

    • Human beings have been on the planet for millions of years, but because of heavily invested theories of archane archaeology, they want you to believe that this generation is the smartest ever, when in fact, people hundred's of thousand's of years ago were much smarter.

      I'm a big fan of Cro Magnon. Louis Leakey (father of paleoanthropology) concluded they originated in the American Southwest from his digs in Calico Hills, CA funded by the National Geographic Society in the early 1970s. It is still a huge, but hushed-up, controversy among archaeologists. Yet current finds have pushed back humans in America to over 30,000 years, when Cro Magnon suddenly and mysteriously emerged in Europe, displacing Neanderthals.
      Sorry to ramble on. This is a huge passion of mine. I'm just so happy you liked my hypothesis on the Mayan calender. It keeps me going.....

      I am afraid that I prefer 10, 100, 1000, 10, 000 myself , I heart the metric system !
      25, 630 is sort of an awkward clumpage of temporal units for my taste.

      ( But I come from a generation that spends more time inside under artificial lighting, and far less under the stars )

      If you look at the cranium size of the frontal lobe in the human family tree homo sapien sapiens mark the only time in the evolution of man that brain size diminished.

    • People forget that Dec 21 2012 is an Astronomical event, as the Earth travels around the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy it oscilates up and down passing thru the spiral plain, going from regions of relative emptiness passing thru regions of more dense matter. This is what the date signifies we are going from a "safe" region to a much less safe region as far as potential collisions and gravity mass effect is concerned. So there really is a potential for increased likelyhood of a space born event. I am 1/4 Mayan and I approve this message ;-)

    • These people actually looked to the stars in the heavens and not Hollywood for guidance. How far we have fallen. Thanks for this. It is very interesting. Something I have always been fascinated about as well with many civilizations, is that as advanced as they obviously were in many ways, they still overused their resources which led to their demise in many instances. Another very important lesson we have not learned. I hope the end of this age brings the beginning of a better one. I try to be hopeful that new consciousness is coming.
