Its a fairly common rich, conservative opinion that ANYONE who has a 4th grade education can just pick up a hammer and become a construction worker...please burst their bubbles of retardation.

As they try to ignore the Many environmental problems with the Keystone project they either don't realize that Most of the jobs are already taken by company people that would be sent to America and the jobs actually "created" in America would be Only Temporary labor jobs and would be FAR fewer and pay Far Less than Any of their estimates or they are just Koch suckers and FOX believers.

Even the State Dept. was found e-mailing with a former employee being allowed to lobby for Transcanada and it was the State Dept that also said in the beginning that the environmental effects would not be detrimental. Only after that "relationship" was brought out into the open (and reported on Think Progress and other sites BTW) was it that they suddently stated it couildn't be done over the planned route because of all of the environmental reviews that needed to be done. They also approved the Alberta Clipper line that has already been built (to surprisingly no fanfare or protest from those on any side all of a sudden so incensed about the XL for political reasons) that is already pumping bitumen into this country. Where is the outrage about that and the spills that have already occurred? ( Yellow River, etc.)
This isn't just one sided here. Both Republicans who are despicable in their cronyism and apathetic in their humanity and Democrats with their enabling ( the Governor of Montana who is a Democrat supported it) and in trying just as hard now to make this a political issue in an election year without aggressively pushing a true alternative and talking about climate change are to blame for this. What did you think the "conservative" media was going to do? They are OWNED by oil. And they get away with it because no one sets them straight. But to state this is all one sided is disingenuous because they have had help.
This planet is in trouble and frankly, I'm sick of seeing this being used as a political football on all sides just because Republicans want to protect their wallets and backers and Democrats just want to use it to campaign for Obama. This goes way beyond laying some pipe and we aren't addressing that at all in ANY media. Why aren't we truly occupying this planet to save ourselves then? I'll tell you why-because this ADDICTION is just too set in us to break regardless of what we say. The tarsands will go on until every bit of the Boreal Forest is GONE. Then what?- Game over, and it won't matter then what BS FOX News said about it, because we didn't DO anything about it..

FOX of course is a mouth piece for the Koch's and the oil industry. Why would anybody think they would get anything but misinformation out of the whore house?

The core of the entire problem is that we need to sit back and reflect why are we going through extreme measures to extract oil. And it's not just tar sands.
I know that most here know the answers, but next time you discuss the pipeline, try to get people thinking in this direction.

This snip from an article tells you all you need to know.
"Now as we already know via Inside Climate News, Koch exports 25% of all tarsands crude to the US.
In 2009, Flint Hills Resources Canada LP, an Alberta-based subsidiary of Koch Industries, applied for—and won—"intervenor status" in the National Energy Board hearings that led to Canada's 2010 approval of its 327-mile portion of the pipeline.
The company's Flint Hills subsidiary already has an oil terminal in Hardisty, Alberta, the starting point of the Keystone XL. It sends about 250,000 barrels of diluted bitumen a day to a heavy oil refinery it owns near St. Paul, Minn., making that refinery "among the top processors of Canadian crude in the United States," the company website says."

I frankly more and more long for a time (which I suspect is coming, and inevitable) when "people" (they barely qualify as human) like them will be targeted and assassinated for their crimes against humanity by some kind of organization(s) dedicated to removing such "people". "People" like them should live in fear of their lives for their crimes.

The best jobs if or when this pipeline goes through will be Canadian. Trans Canada is Canadian and its top jobs are already held by Canadians. If they do built it, it will only takes a small staff to monitor the line after construction. So where are these 100k jobs they talk about?
So the decision for American citizens to make is whether the pipeline is in the best interest of the environment and your health. I am so sick of the lies coming from the right. Whether this pipeline is safe for the environment should not be political. Environmental issues should be in everyone's best interest. We all breathe the air, drink the water, and eat food grown in the ground. If the pipeline impacts any of those things, then it should not be built. It's that simple.
We have to start somewhere protecting this planet. Maybe preventing this from being built would be a start.

What I've always wondered is, since most of the tar sands oil is already planned to be exported to Eurasia and South America why does it have to run through the U.S.? Canada has access to the Atlantic and Pacific. Is it NIMBY (not in my backyard)?

I think you may be right - NIMBY. Canadians are fighting to keep the pipeline from going through British Columbia in order for it it be shipped to China because of environmental issues. However, I also have to say that there are a vast number of Canadians that do not even want the tar sands. But that hasn't stop Harper and the Federal government. He has already approved the development of another tar sands north of Fort McMurray, where the existing tar sands are located.
Also, most American pushing for this pipeline do not understand that the oil would go into the world market no matter where it is refined. The oil refineries in Texas are not owned by the US.
This whole tar sands pipeline started during Bush's term. Obama is taking a big hit trying to at least investigate whether it is in the US's best interest to send it to Texas through a pipeline. There are already way too many pipelines currently operating, why do we need one more?
Another food for thought is while the GOP are blasting Obama for at least delaying approval, remember that Nebraska is controlled by the GOP. They are also saying NIMBY, but want there cake and eat it too by blaming this all on Obama.

coolplanet:
The reason why is because there are already refineries in texas that can handle the kind oil that comes from alberta and building a pipeline to the infrastructure already built in america will cost a fraction of the amount building a new refinery and even with these set backs a fraction of the red tape. It can take 10-15 years for a new refinery to be approved and built.
