Romney: I ‘lived in the real streets’

Multimillionaire Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Thursday claimed he was a regular person who “lived in the real streets of America.”
During a CNN-sponsored debate in South Carolina, the former Massachusetts governor said that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s “involvement in Washington is a perfect example of why we need to send to Washington someone who has not lived in Washington, but someone who has lived in the real streets of America, working in the private sector, who’s led a business, who started a business, who helped lead the Olympics, who helped lead a state.”
“Now, you asked me an entirely different question,” Romney paused, pleading with moderator John King to help him remember what he was supposed to be talking about.
“Beats me,” Gingrich shrugged. “Where are we at, John?”
Throughout his campaign, Romney, who is worth around $250 million, has made a series of tone-deaf attempts to relate to average Americans.
In June, he told a group of unemployed people in Florida that he was “also unemployed.”
Returning to Florida in September, the candidate claimed that he was part of the middle class.
Romney told a group of workers at a steel plant in November that federal employees made more than he did. He has also said that he knows “what it’s like to worry whether you’re going to get fired.”
Unlike many Americans, the former Massachusetts governor has the option of living on the “real streets” at his California beachfront mansion, or one of his homes in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

No Current watcher will ever vote Rep. even at gunpoint. It's a moot point, but if one wants the truth, a street person or a down and out person is said to live "on the streets-- to sleep, eat and socialized ON the street surface.
Walking "in the real streets of America" is what everyone else does unless they live in DC, which is not the real America. Counterpoint? I just like truth. - 4 months ago

joeredford, thanks for reply. Just seek truth only in ALL. Right, left and outer space. If true, he's a callous person re 4 legs. Mormons...I've gotten in a lot of trouble in small home town about 2 very neglected dogs--both Mormon owners, so I think there might be problems with the cult in general...just saying...
My experience was pretty horrible. No one would help at all. Mormon accountant at that. I got a lot of flack though complaining. Jane the sad is sad only about the death of Earth--otherwise happy! - 4 months ago

I'm thinking this is gonna be a toss-up between Mitt, Newt, and Ron with Santorum biting the dust. All in the 25-30% range except Santorum tanks to around 10-15%.

My first trip down south in 1962 was a real eye-opener for me. Before that I had never been south of Washington DC. When we stopped at a gas station and went to use the restroom I was shocked to see the signs that said "for Whites Only" on the doors of the restrooms and the drinking fountain. I agree that the countryside is beautiful but it makes me wonder how can people who live in such a beautiful area be so cruel to others, especially minorities?
By the way, if you haven't seen the movie "The Help" yet I highly recommend it. It takes place in the early 60s just before the civil rights movement.

Yeah he does. And I haven't kicked him under the bus yet. I still have this odd thing in my head that perhaps, just perhaps, we progressives might find some common ground with him that might have some impact in 2016. So far he is not immersed in BigMoney so that's a plus. Still, there's the states rights/racist business that won't go away.
For now he's just a major pain for the GOP. Works for me. He'll go away sooner or later. It's just a matter of what it's gonna cost the GOP to make him go away. I'm thinking it will be at least a back room guarantee of a Senate chair on a major committee for son Rand. - 4 months ago

Hey, I can relate to Mitt just fine. Let's see, my dad was a taxi-cab driver in Seattle who could only work in that industry because he was injured in the Army prior to WWII and with a 3rd grade education was lucky to make $6K/year until his Social Security Disability retirement at 55.
Oh, your dad was a governor? you always had money? you had the best education? you never served in the military? you went to wall street and made millions of dollars and have retired before my father could have imagined.
Oh yeah, you're from that place in America where we can all relate.

I wonder what streets he is talking about? Here is a quote from Simon Mann of the Sydney Morning Herald. "Romney's history is one of privilege. The youngest of four children, born just after World War 2 into a Mormon family, he is of a generation that benefited from the hard slog of parents who pushed through the Depression. He went to top schools, making his way to Stanford University in California and eventually to Harvard to emerge with law and business degrees". On a personal note, I think it is only fair to point out that Mitt did do two years of missionary service. In France. What kind of missionary service does one do in France? The missionary position maybe, but not missionary service. I wonder if being a missionary in the mean streets of third world France are the streets he is talking about? The destitution of the Chance De Lise. The horror the Ile Saint Louis, home of Notre Dame. The ghastly presence of the Eiffel Tower. Yes, mean streets indeed.

It was illegal according to Massachusettes law and he said he was "unaware" of that. He didn't stop the car untill the dog urinated and defecated down the back window. I'm sure you can just google Romney/dog and find the interview.
As for me, I don't want anyone who treats animals this way in the White House. He's already in my dog house.
