House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said on Sunday that he may block an extension of the payroll tax holiday if President Barack Obama does not approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that this Keystone pipeline is in fact approved,” the Speaker told Fox News host Chris Wallace.
“Are you saying you may link the Keystone pipeline to extending the payroll tax holiday?” Wallace asked.
“We may,” Boehner admitted. “As I say, all options are on the table.”
“Why not demand that if he wants the payroll tax cut, he has to approve it?” Wallace urged. “In other words, it comes with it. You want the payroll tax cut, the pipeline goes with it.”
“All options are on the table,” Boehner repeated.
Wallace also noted that during his upcoming annual State of the Union speech, Obama would ask for more help for the middle class, propose that the wealth pay more taxes and suggest a “grand bargain” to cut the deficit and raise the nation’s debt limit.
“It sounds to me like the same old policies that we’ve seen,” Boehner complained. “And if that’s what the president’s going to talk about Tuesday night, I think it’s pathetic.”
Last week, the Obama administration rejected TransCanada Corp.’s plan to pipe Canadian oil sands through sensitive environmental areas to Gulf Coast refineries. The 2 percentage point payroll tax cut for 160 million workers expires in February.

JB looks like his undies are in a bit of a bundle during this interview. He has to be the good soldier for the oil industry no matter how much it puts him between the proverbial rock and a hard place with the voters. To serve his masters on this one, he must feel like he's giving head to a live grenade.

Obummer should let this pipeline go through. Funny, when Republicans stand up for something they believe in the wacky left says they are holding us hostage or obstructing. When Democrats do it they are standing up for the little guy. What a snow job. Many of us can see through it.

Pipe line not being built? Don't you know that all that dirty polluting sludge will create a few temporary jobs and that all that sludge will be turned into oil, but not for our consumption, it will be sold on the open oil market at huge profits. It's sad that most of our fellow citizens will be hoodwinked into believing that there will be thousands of permanent jobs and that all that sludge will lower our gas prices.
They say a fool and his money are soon parted! In this case there is no help for the brainwashed brain dead people that will believe the lies the Republicans will sell them for their own wallets by tying the pipeline into the tax cut extension for the middle class. The same middle class that pays an already inflated profit making price for the fuel they use everyday. - 4 months ago

The freedom to pick and choose what you will buy and not buy is great, however, if you become overly dependent on something, it is you who gives power to those who provide it. It's popular for individuals to depict the oil companies as something just short of a Satan, but they forget it is their excessive dependence on what "Satan" provides that creates their misery.
So too with government.
Commit yourself to genuine independence as much as is practical and you remove much of the overbearing power of such things over your life. The best defence against the predator is to not be such willing prey.

If Obama holds the line Boehner will have to cave again. There is no defensible reason to tie a pipeline approval to a tax cut for most Americans. Why stop the charge of the light brigade. If they want to slaughter themselves, it saves us the trouble.

"The Keystone XL Corporations Lining Speaker Boehner's Pockets
January 18, 2012 11:35 am ET — Brian PowellRep. John Boehner's (R-OH) tenure as Speaker of the House has had mixed reviews. He's demonstrated a lack of control over his party on some issues and a refusal to compromise with Democrats on others. But on one issue in particular, Boehner has been determined to show leadership: pushing for the rapid construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would connect the oil sands of Alberta, Canada with refineries on the Gulf of Mexico. Boehner has made several public statements urging the Obama administration to approve the project, he's pressed the issue fervently on the speaker's blog, and in December he pushed a bill that unnecessarily coupled an extension of the payroll tax cut to a requirement that the president make a decision on the pipeline permit within 60 days, regardless of environmental concerns.
And it's no wonder that Speaker Boehner has latched onto the Keystone XL pipeline as a leadership priority. After all, Boehner has invested somewhere between $106,000 and $365,000 in companies that would benefit from the pipeline's swift approval. His purchases — in companies like Chevron and ConocoPhillips — conveniently began in 2009, when the Keystone XL project was in its infancy and when Boehner was on the cusp of becoming Speaker of the House.
But there's more. Boehner has also been profiting from a rash of political donations from these same companies he's invested in and others that would benefit tremendously from the Keystone XL project. Since 2008, Boehner has received tens of thousands of dollars — well into six figures — from companies like ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Marathon Oil, Koch Industries and more.
So using his clout as Speaker of the House to push the Keystone XL project through appears to be a huge win-win for Boehner's pocketbook. Surprisingly, this kind of financial influence is not illegal — but it certainly seems like a significant conflict of interest. It's something to keep in mind when watching Boehner tout the project's inflated job-creation estimates or dismissing environmental concerns about the oil pipeline as "nonsense." Who is the Speaker really looking out for?
Read our research on Speaker Boehner's investments in Keystone XL companies HERE."
