NASA Report: Greenhouse Gases, Not Sun, Driving Warming

A recent, prolonged lull in the sun's activity did not prevent the Earth from absorbing more solar energy than it let escape back into space, a NASA analysis of the Earth's recent energy budget indicates.

An imbalance like this drives global warming — since more energy is coming in than leaving — and, because it occurred during a period when the sun was emitting comparatively low levels of energy, the imbalance has implications for the cause of global warming.

The results confirm greenhouse gases produced by human activities are the most important driver of global climate change, according to the researchers.

They found that the Earth absorbed 0.58 watts of excess energy per square meter than escaped back into space during the study period from 2005 to 2010, a time when solar activity was low. By comparison, the planet receives 0.25 watts less energy per square meter during a solar minimum, than during a period of maximum activity in the sun's 11-year cycle. (Currently, the sun is in the midst of Solar Cycle 24, with activity expected to ramp up toward solar maximum in 2013.)

"The fact we still see a positive imbalance despite the prolonged solar minimum isn't a surprise given what we've learned about the climate system," lead researcher James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said in a statement. "But it's worth noting, because this provides unequivocal evidence that the sun is not the dominant driver of global warming."

However, in an email to LiveScience, Hansen noted that "the sun is a small but not negligible factor," in determining the size of the imbalance. Over the past decade, the imbalance declined slightly due, in part, to the solar minimum, according to Hansen. [Gallery: Our Amazing Sun]

Solar activity refers to the activity of the sun's magnetic field. Fluctuations in solar activity, including magnetic field-powered sunspots and solar flares, have been linked to past changes in climate, including, controversially, the Little Ice Age. Some skeptics have attributed contemporary climate change to natural fluctuations in solar activity, rather than human-emitted greenhouse gases — the explanation endorsed by nearly all climate scientists, including those convened by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Incoming solar radiation is measured by satellites; the recent minimum set records for the reduction in solar radiation since satellite measurements began in the 1970s.

      Also see:

      http://www.skepticalscience.com/global-warming-other-planets-solar-system-interm...

It is also disingenuous to compare the Earth of today with other planets in the solar system that have different makeups and circumstances in comparison to Earth and also because little is known about many of them. And looking at those planets do we see human life? The envelope in which the human species HERE can comfortably survive is being pushed. Trying to divert this important call to do what is necessary to preserve our own survival by comparing it to Venus which is devoid of life (obviously with good reason) shows a lack of concern for humanity and more concern for a political/ideological agenda.

Actually Jane, we should take a much closer look on what on planets like Venus. They are a perfect example of what happens, when too much greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere.

Venus atmosphere consists of 96% CO2, while Earth atmosphere consists of 79% N, 20% O, and only less than 1% CO2.
Venus has a surface temperature of 750 K (900F) even on the night side. The temperature from solar influx should only be about 375 K (215F). What we see on Venus is a so called runaway greenhouse effect which increases the temperature by 375K. The main reason for this runaway greenhouse effect is the huge amount of CO2 in Venus atmosphere.

Oh, I agree about that which is why I said Venus was devoid of life for good reason. Venus should actually be our warning, which was what Carl Sagan stated in the video above. My point was that deniers use that as a reason for us to do nothing or to dismiss human forcings totally forgetting that runaway effect and that we have species that live on this planet that could never survive in such a setting.

Which graph do I believe? The one provided by peer-reviewed science!
The claim that other planets are experiencing similar warming as Earth has been completely debunked by NASA. Google it.
Yes, plants need CO2. But like any fertilizer, too much will kill the plant.

sorry to be sooo stupid...I know a great deal of our science is bought and paid for these days. I also know NASA is a part of a system that is interested only in it's own perpetuation and not in benefiting humanity...sorry again, but won't blindly trust them.

    • Today in my community in the Northwest Territories, the temperature was -2c (which is 28f) Our normal temperature for this time of year use be around -25c (which is -13f) during the day. Last spring the leaves came out on my bushes in March because it was so warm (then we went into another cold spell). Leaves normally bloom in June up here. My lilac bushes also bloom twice the last two summers. This fluctuation in the weather is reeking havoc on our environment. It also makes it difficult for our bodies to adjust to these extreme temperature swings. So to me global warming (or global climate change) is real.

Very true. The USDA has revised their planting maps, moving whole climate zones northward. I have seen plants for sale in local nurseries that we would not have even thought of planting here 10 years ago. My mint and parsley survived the freak snowstorm in October and stayed green for the first 2 weeks of November, until we had some sustained cold. A few days ago the high reached 60 F (15.5C) and this is January. This is not normal.

where's the info that shows the solar maximum we're currently in?
Also, are people so dense, that they really believe that the earth can generate it's own heat...or that the laws of thermal dynamics cease to apply only when it deals with the effects of "Global Warming"? I mean, come on....seriously?

This graph is from 2008 and clearly shows that, since 1980, Earth's temp has been increasing as the Sun's output has been decreasing. We have experienced three solar maximums since 1980.
Ice core samples going back millions of years clearly show that when atmospheric CO2 levels decrease the Earth gets colder and when CO2 levels increase the Earth gets hotter. This is called 'the greenhouse effect' which has been an accepted scientific fact for 150 years.

it is NASA that originally said the solar max was going to have huge affects on the Earth. Guess when you are the most scientific of scientific orgs you can make your own tune and everyone just dances along.

Solar flares indeed have a huge effect on Earth, especially if one hits us and blows out the power grid and satellites. Solar flares can also influence storm patterns for a few days or weeks.
But solar max has very little if no impact on global temperatures.

I don't quite understand the question. If by 'they' you mean NASA, it has been scientists at NASA who have been warning us about CO2-induced global warming for 50 years now (their top climatologist James Hansen has been pleading for us to phase out fossil fuel since the 1980s).

    • Nasa was founded by Nazi's...think they are reliable? I understand the climate is screwed and we don't help it with our destructive approach to progress, but there is more going on here than we are being told.

      Founded by Nazi's ?

Just because Wernher von Braun, (said to be - the greatest rocket scientist in history) surrendered to the U.S. at the end of WW2, does not mean NASA was founded by Nazi's.

And he did build the Saturn 5 rocket that got us to the moon, (that's pretty reliable).

He could have very well . . . surrendered to the Russians . . .

N.A.S.A. was not founded by Nazis. It was founded by Congress on a legislative draft sent by President Eisenhower at the request of Eilene Galloway. In the spring of 1958, Congress passed the legislation and President Eisenhower signed N.A.S.A. into law. Many former Nazis worked on U.S. government projects from as early as 1946. Wernher von Braun is the most famous of these former Nazis having worked on Hitlers V1 and V2 rockets. He did not join N.A.S.A. until 1960, and was its director until 1970. I have my doubts that there are any Nazis still working there. And yes, you can trust N.A.S.A. now that George Bush and Dick Chaney are not forcing them to falsify climate change data.

Set aside that as a scientist myself, I feel personal insulted by such a stupid comment, but with this one post you just insulted hundreds of my colleagues at NASA from all fields of science. I guess that is what you have to rely on, when you run out of arguments. It only shows that you have no idea of how science works. Just to let you know in the science community, NASA is one most trustworthy science institutions in the world.

So because America wanted to co-opt German technology after the war, it means that NASA is a bunch NAZIs making shit up about global warming? If the strength of my facepalm was proportional to the ridiculous of such a view my head would probably come clean off and go into orbit around the Earth.

I never said you are paranoid or an idiot. But the notion that N.A.S.A. was founded by Nazis is not true. Wernher von Braun worked for N.A.S.A., not the other way around. Are you saying the U.S. is actually a shadow Nazi regime. I suppose the U.S. could have let the Soviet Union take all of the Nazi scientists. How do you think that would have worked out for the rest of the world? If working for Hitler's government made them Nazis at heart, what did working for the United States government make them at heart? Yes a lot of former Nazis worked for the United States. But do you think for one second that any of the U.S. agencies said "Okay you former Nazis, you are in charge now, what should we do. We fought W.W.2 so we could hand over the reigns of power to the Nazis we captured after we won"? As soon as they hit American soil they were no longer Nazis, They were assets that American democracy used as they saw fit. And I would imagine the vast majority of them are long dead.

Yes c-squared, I have known about all of this for 30 years. These scientists did not make N.A.S.A. a Nazi organization. N.A.S.A. is an American organization that happened to use former Nazis. The optimal word being former. They did not infiltrate the Space Agency. The U.S. used them for their talents and nothing more. This is exactly what Hitler did. At what point do you think these former Nazis told Congress or the President what U.S. policy regarding the space race was going to be? At what point do you think they told Hitler what Nazi policy during the Second World War was going to be? They did exactly as they were told under both circumstances. They were nothing more than assets to both governments. And let's not forget, the U.S. and Nazi Germany are both famous for using slave labor. The U.S. just beat the Nazis to the punch, and did it for at least 200 years longer.

said nothing about infiltration...there have been a million comments any many posts about how Fascism is alive and well in the USA. Laws that have been currently passed, and some that did not, show this is not far from untrue. With 1000 members working on different projects for the same organization how can you think their beliefs didn't play a role in the administration and attitude of said organization and it's direction.

Why do you think they did? And no, their Nazi past would play no role whatsoever in the attitudes of American organizations. As a matter of fact, they would have kept their mouths shut about their Nazi past for fear of getting their asses kicked. These organizations had spent 4 years and countless American lives defeating the Nazis. Do you think for one second the Americans dealing with the former Nazis were open to any of these guys saying "you know what, we had it right even if you guys won, and here's why"? Not a chance. And can you imagine the indignant protesting that came from these organizations when they were told Nazis were coming to work with them? The hatred in the room when these former Nazis entered must have been palpable. The fascism in the United States today does not have a damn thing to do with the Nazis. It has everything to do with today's American fascists. It could be that you don't like the idea that some Americans could be that evil without some kind of outside influence. Well they are. Do you actually think if today's fascism is because of the influence of the Nazis it would have taken this long to manifest itself? And I did not say you said they infiltrated anything. My point was that American organizations new full well who these guys were so their Nazi pasts were on full view. They would not have been able to influence a thing politically because the Americans who had just defeated them in W.W.2 would have been watching them like hawks.
