Documentary: Breast cancer cure ‘hijacked’ by pink ribbons

Long before Susan G. Komen for the Cure decided to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood, one breast cancer survivor began to ask questions about how the cause of finding a cure had turned into a money-making enterprise.

Dr. Samantha King’s 2008 book, “Pink Ribbons” — which questions the legitimacy of the market-driven survivorship industry — was the basis for a documentary by the same name that was released in Canada on Friday.

King suggests that corporations are “pinkwashing” by using the iconic pink ribbon as a feel-good tactic in order to sell merchandise.

“That’s when corporations … sell products that might be linked to breast cancer,” she told CBC. “So cosmetics with toxic ingredients, for example, also make money by doing pink ribbon marketing.”

“One of my favorite examples is a breast cancer handgun that went on sale in the U.S. last year. We’ve seen Kentucky Fried Chicken, snowshoes — the list is really endless” she explained.

The Komen Foundation on Friday decided to reverse their decision and allow Planned Parenthood to be eligible for future grants, but only time will tell if they permanently damaged their brand in the process.

From the standpoint of the makers of “Pink Ribbons,” a weakened survivorship industry might just be the best thing for finding a cure in the long run.

“Pink Ribbons” opened on Friday at theaters in Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and Kelowna. That release date was set before the current controversy erupted in the U.S.

    • "how the cause of finding a cure had turned into a money-making enterprise" ? is a great question. The same can be asked of Child Protection Agencies, Family court system, privatized prisons. Federal grants are the encouragement.

    • One one hand there's some definite cynicism at play on the part of these companies. On the other hand there's a lot of bad taste among the general public that spurs on sales. I'm all about the limited use of these ribbons etc to bring up the issue, but on the other hand the idea of selling a pink shirt with a company logo and maybe the pink ribbon sharing space and the common mentality that goes along with it, where americans feel like we have to turn all our causes into bumper stickers, is ludicrous and sad. What happened to quiet conviction? Use your time money and effort to directly support a charity or create an awareness event. The pink (and variously colored) ribbons have become showy and facile.

    • I don't know the individual players and could care less.
The "war" the wing nut left waged on Komen says more negative things about the them than Komen. Komen cuts off funding for reasons that don't have anything to do with abortion yet in the liberal world, anything that infringes with killing children brings out the long knives. Breast cancer is a terrible disease for a woman to get. Komen should be put on a pedestal for the work it does yet it seems that only abortion rights should be supported.
Planned Parenthood and its supporters have made it plain that this is agenda driven, they really care nothing for women but are only about killing children. I have always said that the abortion issue should be between the mother, father and the doctor. I still think that is the case but I cannot support the organization of PP any longer. I will contact my elected reps to agitate for the cutting of funding to Planned Parenthood. I am completely disgusted with the lefts reaction and behavior toward Komen. It is the lowest form of behavior I have seen yet coming from them and that says a LOT. Taxpayer money should not go to that organization, not because of abortions but because of the scorched earth knee jerk reaction toward Komen which, and I reiterate, shows that the organization cares nothing for women medical issues. This dovetails very neatly with what I have observed after posting here for a while in that there is nothing worse than going against one of the lefts sacred cows, particularly a shibboleth such as abortion.

    • Paratus:

Planned Parenthood does a lot more than just abortions. Services provided at locations include contraceptives (birth control); emergency contraception; screening for breast, cervical and testicular cancers; pregnancy testing and pregnancy options counseling; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases; comprehensive sexuality education, menopausetreatments; vasectomies, tubal ligations, and, of course, abortion.

So how many abortions do they actually perform? As demonized as this organization is, you would think it ranks in the millions. Actually, here's a numbers breakdown from 2009:
4,009,549 contraceptive services (35% of total)
3,955,926 sexually transmitted disease services (35% of total)
1,830,811 cancer related services (16% of total)
      1,178,369 pregnancy/prenatal/midlife services (10% of total)
332,278 abortion services (3% of total)
76,977 other services (1% of total)
      In all, 11,383,900 services
They also annually conduct 1 million screenings for cervical cancer and 830,000 breast exams.

    • Thank you for posting this, KB! It's important to inform people of the abuses that take place in order to pad one's bank account. These people are not working for a cure, IMO, and the hangers-on are reprehensible. +^d

    • This can really be said about any organization that supposedly raises money for a cause. The administrative costs always make the actual money going toward anything meaningful miniscule.

There will never be a cure for cancer because it is too profitable. This will never change and there will always be organizations that exploit that.

    • Sad thing is that anyone will try to make money on peoples misery. But today I gave money to a homeless Iraq vet who needed a helping hand. Give to a reputable organization or to someone who really needs it. There is more satisfaction in that then giving money to a money making machine for profits and salaries.
If any one is wondering this vet was across the street from a VA outpatient center. Where homeless vets gather for food, clothing and shelter for the night.

    • Most movements that have wide appeal get highjacked to some degree, I think.

When Bush shoved our soldiers into Iraq, remember the "for the troops "ribbon" magnets one could put on one's car, refrigerator, etc.?

I saw one that summed it up perfectly. It had the same ubiquitous ribbon loop, but the text said "I'm supporting the troops by buying this magnet from China."

    • KB...This is excellent!!!...more people need to understand the connection between some of these organizations and corporate greed...in the name of finding a "cure" that the industry does not want...as some of you know, I am a two-time cancer survivor...and from my experience I know that there is no real interest in the so-called "health" industry for finding a cure...there are hundreds of thousands if not millions of people whose careers...incomes...hopes and dreams are tied to the continuance and further growth of the cancer industry...and the heart industry...and the diabetes industry etc. etc....does that apply to every person in those industries...of course not, but the corporatization of them is not driven by those who care for anything other than profit...

About five years ago I left my oncologist's office for the last time...I was through being radiated every few months because the history is clear that all that radiation is not benign...I was through with blood tests that were not even close to being accurate, and in fact have now proven to give more false positives than correct readings...my medical bills were horrendous...multiple doctors...incredible lab invoices...etc etc.

The Komen move to cut funding to the one large health care provider for those without options...whose work in cancer prevention and care is outstanding...whose general health programs, designed to prevent illness and unwanted pregnancies are above reproach and whose safe and responsible abortion program is the best available...is driven by pure right wing ideology that does not give a damn about the health care of American citizens...

I hope this takes the Komen Foundation down and begins the campaign to ferret out the rest of the phoney corporate fronts...

    • Thanks for posting the trailer, KB. I mentioned this earlier. It's a pinkwashing of a serious disease. They are making money hand over fist with all the pink products you can buy! Walk into any store during the month of October, breast cancer month, and everything you see is pink....all the way from paper towels to small appliances! You'd think it was a fan club for crying out loud! I see Barbara Ehrenreich is in this movie. She would know because she is a breast cancer survivor. Everybody should read her great book called "Bright-Sided" (How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking has Undermined America) Chapter one deals with the pinkwashing and Barbara's own experiences with it. Komen's sister has road this gravy train all the way to the bank! Shame on her!
PS....if there was a cure for cancer, this organization would have no reason to exisit. Personally, I think there is a cure for cancer....this country just doesn't want you to know about it because then big pharma and big insurance could no longer profit off of it.

Thanks Leen, this day has seemed to evolve around women's issues I was watching MSNBC this morning and Andrea Mitchell was talking about her Breast Cancer, I think you are correct, and I also think if there is a Cure, only the 1% get to use it... =(

It gets kinda involved but it basically revolves around the old "ends justify the means" discussion. If you accept that the ends are beneficial but you don't like the means, you have to figure out how to change the ends while preserving the means. Hopefully, the events of the last few days will get a whole lot more minds working on that problem.

Not to mention all the other poisons they're ingesting, but who care's lets walk, wear pink and pay some big pharma company billions to pump you up with pills.

I didn't think about this KB but it doesn't surprise me. Corporations always take advantage of a good thing. It's all about money. The pink ribbins always reminded me to make sure I have a screening. I am glad the Komen organizion changed their mind about about funding of planned parenthood. Politics is all that was about.
