A Colorado medical marijuana grower was sentenced to six years in Illinois state prison after he was caught with a shipment of 42 pounds of marijuana in Chicago.
Former Chicago mortgage broker Ryan Bailey had moved to Colorado as a part of the “green rush” of young entrepreneurs going west to make money in the cannabis industry.
A Chicago Police sting caught Ryan Bailey in a home on the Northwest side with dozens of pounds of medical pot on March, 9 2010.
A drug-sniffing dog had located a box with Tupperware containers filled with 42 pounds of weed at a UPS facility, according to The Chicago Sun-Times. Labels on the package indicated it had been shipped from a California law firm to a design company in Chicago.
An undercover officer posing as a UPS worker delivered it to the home, where it was signed for by Jason Duda. Authorities claim that Bailey had paid Duda $200 to accept the package.
After obtaining a search warrant, police allegedly found Bailey in the home holding a package of marijuana, which he quickly tossed into a box.
“Some people in the industry have gotten lucky,” he told the Sun-Times last year. “Other guys like me have gotten caught in the system.”
Bailey is being held in Stateville Correctional Center after being sentenced to six years last week, CBS Chicago reported.
He also faces separate charges in Colorado where he is accused of growing more than 670 marijuana plants.
Under Colorado law, medical marijuana patients can grow up to six plants for personal use. “Caregivers” can grow additional plants for up to five other patients.
North Metro Task Force commander Jerry Peters said there was some wiggle room in the law that could allow patients to grow more plants if they can demonstrate a need.
“But six people could not possibly consume 670 plants in a month,” he added.
Bailey’s wife, Amber Cook, operates the Grass Roots Organica marijuana dispensary in a small Denver home. She is not accused of any wrongdoing.

To those who says he deserves what he got: do you have an actual mind of your own or do you just let the establishment dictate your morality to you? Seriously! Anyone who thinks anybody deserves to rot in a cage for a flower is sick and has been twisted by our defunct system. You should be ashamed. You are just an unthinking tool of oppression against your fellow man.

now, now nox.. We're just so used to being beaten down it's become commonplace. In my younger years I did time in prison for my "dalliance". It was dumb then, and even dumber now. However I will point out your reference to "flower". The poppy is a flower too, and a damn sight more dangerous - in spite of just being a flower. Speaking from experience. Have done both.

I do understand that the bad guys aren't actually the people who have been conditioned by society. I just lost my temper for a second there. Sorry for your time in prison. In reference to the poppy flower, I'm not sure but I think it actually has to be processed unlike the cannabis flower, but the flower of which I speak is specifically the cannabis flower. Still, who is man to make any plant illegal? Prison isn't the solution for people addicted to hard drugs either. It is a health issue (physical and psychological).

Hey nox.., agree completely. Point in fact is that opium & pot are worlds apart - even though both start out as a plant. You have to "milk" the poppy - don't think that would work with the weed. With the poppy one cuts a notch in the stalk and then collects the sap that forms. "Tears of the Poppy" No apologizes necessary - for your temper or my bad judgement. Not to take a religious bent here, but it's true you reap what you sow. You're also right about drug addiction, and I've known a few of those. It IS a medical problem - or a psychological one. Sure as hell incarceration doesn't do anything for it. Locking them up - removing them from their "fix" doesn't do shit. They go right back. Just like combating the more common alcohol addiction, there is no actual medical help. The addicts brain is what continues to lead him astray. Until he comes to regard addiction as the enemy there's no help for him; and that's a mighty hard step to take and almost impossible by yourself. That's why AA works, and everything else doesn't. The human brain can learn a new thing, but can't "unlearn". Once you decide something is a "good thing" then you're stuck with it - irregardless of where that takes you.

Now the reality check!
How much money did the Government spend to arrest and convict this idiot?
How much will it cost the Government to house and feed this fool for 12 years?
No wait I should have said how much will it cost the tax payers?
Last reality check!!
How much tax revenue did the state and Federal Government make on this arrest?

GD it! why can't we face facts that this Federal vendetta is bogus! Pot should be completely legal for legitimate medical patients. Abuse of Rx drugs regardless of the type always happens and very little is done to stem this abuse other than Oxy's and that has limited effect. Pot is so ubiquitous that we should be leaving States alone, legalizing it everywhere and taxing the shit out of it.
What a waste of time and taxpayers dollars chasing a truly harmless drug when "abused" or used by a non-Rx recipient.

This probably would have been easier to get away with had the guy just remained covert. It's been common knowledge for decades that using the post office / UPS or any other delivery service to ship the wicked weed around is a dumb move. Not only do that look for that, but then they'll pretend everything is copacetic in order to catch somebody on the delivery end. This guy should have read a bit before he jumped in. For all the new entrepreneurs that have decided that now's the time to become a dealer, I have a piece of advice. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.
A far better idea is to campaign for legalization. Then we could put this crap behind us.
