Less than an hour after same sex marriage became legal in Washington on Monday, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum was meeting with opponents of the law.
Speaking at Calvary Chapel in Olympia, the former Pennsylvania senator promised about 100 pastors and so-called “values voters” that he would work to repeal marriage equality in the state.
“We have a serious issue about trying to get moms and dads to marry and stay together,” Santorum explained. “I don’t see this as encouraging that. I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages, and that to me should be the objective of the government because that is in the best interests of our society.”
The candidate also spoke out about a recent U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that overturned the same sex marriage ban in California.
“It’s pretty intolerant to suggest that people have no rational reason to be in favor of this institution that has been the bulwark of society for 235 years,” Santorum said, adding that both sides needed to “be respectful.”

I thought divorce watered down marriage? But what do I know, I live in a country where the majority of people get divorced and gay marriage isn't even legal.

Santorum's bigoted and prejudicial beliefs defy reason, but as anyone that knows a bigot can tell you, there is no reasoning with a bigot.
Anyone this narrow minded should not hold any office.

I was married 42 years before my husband passed away. We never felt anyone watered down our marriage. Our marriage vows were made to each and to nobody else. I'm more worried about the people that are quick to marry and then quick to divorce making a sham of marriage.

I am not quite sure what you are trying to say. I was trying to make that point that I do not have problem with two consenting adults marrying, be they straight or gay. To say allowing gays to marriage waters down marriage is hogwash. I've know gay marriages that have lasted a hell of a lot longer then some straight marriages. But people that marry for the sake of marriage is a sham. They are not real marriages in my book.

I thought you were on the right track with your comment that marriage is solely between the two people involved. If that is really how you feel then what other couples do has no relevance to your marriage and life. So your thoughts about it being a sham are only in your head. Relax. Enjoy your fidelity to your partner and don't let others actions bother you.

I think we are coming to the same point from different directions. I was just referring to the hypocrisy that those that generally scream the loudest about gays being able married should look in their own backyard first.

I read a great book some years ago: "Same-Sex Unions In Premodern Europe" by Harvard Professor John Boswell. In it he thoroughly documents that until the First Millennium A.D. Christian churches did not perform weddings between men and women. Marriage was considered strictly a civil union to be conducted by local government for the first thousand years of Christianity.
However, Boswell uncovered scores of "Sacred Unions" between men (usually monks or saints) performed in Christian churches -- Catholic and Eastern Orthodox.
Interesting read is you care about real history. - 4 months ago

This so called bulwark of society has been the cause of so much suffering and alienation at every level of society. People kill themselves for not meeting up to the expectations of this institution and the associated compulsory heterosexuality.

Gee, the libs must think Santorum must be a threat to the King. He seems to be squarely in their sights.
After posting here for some time and reading how libs "think" I don't even read crap like this. Obummer cannot run on his accomplishments, he has none. He is a lying, incompetent failure unfit for his position. Libs must do all in their power to discredit anyone who is an electorial threat to the King (king - sorry he doesn't rate a capital K). They did it with Cain, Gingrich, Palin, Bachman etc., etc. Their tactics are deplorable but do seem to have traction, especially with the small minded.
We need to replace Obummer in November to try and fix the disaster he has put this country in. Double the debt, criminal Justice Department, knocking over Border Patrol Agents to facilitate their war on the Second Amendment, bailing out their banking buddies, making beaucoup stupid investment decisions (the fed gov has no right making investment decisions) in more and more bankrupt "green" companies, conducting class warfare designed to divide the country and polarize the electorate, controlling our lives through more and more regulations. The problem is I think the king will prevail in November. There are enough guillable and stupid people to vote for this idiot- again. In fact, it is so necessary that he gets run out of town on a rail that I don't care what is printed here to denigrate his opposition. I believe that the left will go to any lengths regardless of morality, legality or truth, to keep the king in the White House. He is dangerous and needs to go but as long as he can buy enough votes, and he is trying to do just that, he will win. If he does, this country is so screwed.
Anyone but the king in November. - 4 months ago

Santorum makes me ill. Everything he stands for is the opposite of what I believe. A war on contraception and abortion is an attack on Women's rights. Is he planning on feeding the billions of babies that would be unwanted if anyone let his backward ideology take hold anywhere? I guess he believes women belong barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen like his wife.

LBGT equality does not water down marriage.... Arguably "gay-marriage" does... And there is a difference between equal rights, and a cultural invasion of sorts.
I 100% agree, homosexual couples deserve, in the context of committed relationships, all the rights as heterosexual married couples, from insurance, to tax-breaks, on down the list... But then I'd have to think that non sexually involved couples that choose to coexist in the same household because they prefer each others company/partnership in getting through life to a marriage of any sort, should have that right too... You should be able to have all the same rights as a sexually involved partnership if you're committed to having a world built with whomever that person may be, and are sharing a home.
As far as my "cultural invasion" statement... It isn't even arguable, a LARGE percentage of homosexuals certainly aren't born they're conditioned by sexual abuse, one coach Sandusky comes to mind. And sometimes it's societal factors...
A healthy percentage of "gay" or "bi" people get done being a whore, and decide to settle on a monogamous heterosexual committed relationship that often ends in marriage... I know I have a relative, and have known a few "gay' or "bi" people that have done just that.
So there is a little bit of an issue, especially with the percentages of STD's in certain subcultures, and the fact that not everyone who identifies as "gay" was born that way. That's why people who won't argue the point of rights, and don't seek to take anyones rights away, will argue on terminology...
I don't want to raise a heterosexual child, that feels naturally attracted to the opposite sex, to become confused and drawn in to a homosexual subculture, just to later determine, "Gee I wasn't really gay I was just rebelling...."
That shit has happened.... allot......
And that is at least a portion of the argument of using the terminology "marriage" in a homosexual context.
(Not a defense of Santorum though)

If a marriage is strong, why would the marriage of ANYBODY else have any negative effect on it? Why would love between any two people water down your marriage? I find it sick that supposedly "moral" men or women would spend so much time thinking about what others do in their bedrooms - what are they thinking about? This rightness they spew has nothing to do with what is right.
