Mary Kantorowski hasn’t seen her son in eight months so she was surprised to get an eviction notice from him on her 98th birthday.
Peter Kantorowski told the Connecticut Post that he was evicting his mother for her own good.
“She would be better off living with people her own age,” he explained.
Attorney Richard Bortolot Jr., who was appointed by a probate judge to represent Ms. Kantorowski, said that her son had already attempted to put the house, which has been assessed at $333,410, up for sale. The court ruled not only was Ms. Kantorowski competent to manage her own affairs, Peter Kantorowski had wrongly taken power of attorney and used her money for his expenses.
“This is just a despicable situation,” Bortolot said. “Mary has been living here happily paying all the expenses for the house and now her son, Peter, comes along and is telling her, `Get the hell out,’ so he can sell it.”
Ms. Kantorowski’s late husband, John, worked two jobs to pay for the house, where they had lived since 1953.
Jack Kantorowski, who lives next door and checks on his mother daily, told WTNH that he was outraged at his older brother’s behavior.
“I just don’t understand him at all, what’s happening with him, there are no other words to call him, he’s just a scumbag,” he quipped.
A Superior Court trial is scheduled for March 2 to determine if the eviction can go forward.

This poor woman's son should be shot for trying to evict his mother from her home! She is able to live on her own and has the help she needs to continue to live in her home! The son is out for money thats all the welfare of his mother has nothing to do with it!

I suppose most of you have read "The Ninth Wave" it is a reflection of how elderly people are treated today. Also, Brave New World is interesting. As far as taking care of the 100 yo lady I guess the nurse in me is still there.

Wow, nice way to treat your mom on her birthday. She's 98 years old, if she spent all those years in that house let her stay. Dont send her to a senior citizen home. There's history in that house for here, and it might be a way of her remembering her late husband..

My grandmother just passed away a month ago at the age of 89. My mother took time from work to take care for her full time. She has done her best to take care of her mom but still she misses her. I am doubtful if I would be able to do as much as what she did.' If You pay respect to your parents then you receive it from your kids else don't bother'-thats the universal funda.

I've been thinking about this story all day.
I know someone this happened to.
My dear friend Anna was convinced to sell her house and move in with her son, Elmer. Elmer took the $200,000 she got for her house to remodel his house, and Anna lived there for a few years. At the age of 90 he kicked her out and she spent the last 6 years of her life in a county nursing home which he never visited once. I visited her many times to take her out to lunch. She shared a tiny room with an Alzheimer sufferer and the place reaked of urine.
She was the sweetest lady and I seriously wanted to kill Elmer. He didn't even pay for her cremation!
And, by the way, Elmer is a staunch republican. - 3 months ago

That's a terrible way to treat one's mother on her birthday. But I can sympathize with the need to alleviate the burden on productive members of society of those who have become too frail and weak to contribute. However, the manner in which it is done is most important. There is a more sensible and civil manner in which to do it, one that doesn't offend human sensitivities and this man seems to have missed that boat.

In the little town I live in there is a lady who just celibrated her 100 birthday. I go by her place several times a week just to get inspiration. She goes to card games, church, dinner at the local resturant, gathering of ladies groups and drives her own car. Some of the things she can't do which I do for her (nice me) is lift the lid on the dumpster and shovel the snow off the walk. Her family is either moved away or passed on but the town takes care of her if and that is a big if she needs it. Can you believe she even planned her own 100 birthday!

His brother couldn't understand what happened to his brother. I would check to see if he spends all his time watching Fox News. I hope the judge throws the book at this guy for being so greedy. It doesn't say how old he is, but if she is 98, he is probably in his 70s. I hope she out lives him.

When I saw this on the news last night it was then that I realized how greedy people can be. That saying about sell your own mother...well that would be this guy sending her off to a nursing facility while he collects the money for the sale.
The news said she is able to pretty much take care of herself and pays her own bills. I think at 98 this is remarkable and her wishes of staying in her home should be honored. Her other son is going to retain a lawyer to fight this. This has to be stressful for her at a time in her life when she deserves to live as joyfully and peaceful as possible. Awful man.

You are way too right about that Joe, but I really don't think it used to be that way ... my parents were more than comfortable when my brother and I were growing up so I didn't really know what it was like not to have money until I got married, and for most of my married life we never really had enough to live comfortably. But now that Mike is disabled (thnx to his time in Vietnam) we actually have a pretty nice life financially and I actually feel guilty for being comfortable when so many people out there aren't. I wouldn't take money away from my relatives or anyone else -- I'm the one that has a hard time not helping everyone I think might need it. I think in the past (50s/60s and 70s) neighbors and friends were a lot more willing to help each other thru rough patches than people do now -- there are still pockets of that out there -- 2 years ago when our house burned down some of our neighbors and the Catholic church in our neighborhood took a collection and gave us $150 in gift cards to Shopko and one of the local grocery stores, but I think to a great extent this kind of thoughtfulness and caring is the exception instead of the rule nowadays, and to my way of thinking that is one of the big reasons this country has fallen so far :-(.
