Republican Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Monday that the government should not be telling churches who can and can’t get married.
Babeu, an emerging Republican figure and strong border defense sheriff, resigned from his position as Arizona co-chairman of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign on Saturday afternoon amid allegations of threatening to deport a former male lover.
“This is where I go Ron Paul on people,” Babeu told Blitzer. “I believe in less government at the federal level. They should get out of people’s lives. Unless its an enumerated power in the Constitution, it falls to the states. This is where it falls to the states.”
“I can tell you my personal belief and my political belief is I believe in freedom of religion, and there are faiths and religions that our government shouldn’t get involved in that absolutely do not condone gay marriage,” he continued. “The government should tell those faiths and those religions that they have to. At the same time, I don’t believe they should tell other faiths that they can’t. This is where our government needs to get the heck out of the way.
“If it is not harming somebody else, then what does it matter? You can’t legislate love.”
Babeu is also running for the U.S. House in Arizona’s new 4th Congressional District.

As far as I know, the government is not forcing churches to allow gay marriage. Its civil marriages that are the issue and its the civil marriage that really counts. We recognize church marriages, but as far as the state is concerned, you're not married until you file the paperwork with them. So if two gay people go to the state to register a marriage, the state should have no say in the matter. It seems to me that the gay bashers and religious nuts seem to think that giving rights to others takes rights away from them. Can someone explain to me how this works?

my wife church would not marry us because I was divorce but a friend's church performed the service so we could have a church wedding

Please will someone tell me why there are gay members in the GOP? They so-called Log Cabin Republicans are apart of a party which dispises them and tirelessly works to see them eradicated. Now you have this gay sheriff using his power to threaten his lover and he is still a cop? There is plenty of evidence he texted the threats to ruin him business wise and put his and his family's life in danger. The guy is latino and not here illegally and he still tried to threaten deportation. The guy should be fired, arrested, and charged. A GOP stradegist stated the local GOP will deal with him as if they never knew he was gay.....really
Mitt has some explaining to do and will likely cost him Arizona as the polls are showing. That's another reason for those good loving christian to hate him and vote with gay basher Santorum. - 3 months ago

Saw him on interview on CNN. He made claims that the Republican Party is the party of the "big tent." One had better look at the cnadidates and there take on gay rights in the GOP. Admire him for his coming out and his service to the country. But the GOP is not going to welcome gays.

Actually it is a big tent. Its just that more people are leaving than entering. Independents are up to 40% of the electorate now. Most of that comes from the rethuglican party. If they keep going to the right, (with Santorum leading the way), they'll find themselves down to a few billionaires, tea baggers and religious fanatics. Perfectly fine with me, maybe out of its ashes we can get the "old" republican party back under a new name, then we can all move forward and leave the wackos behind.

The Federal government should not be able to tell us we can't do anything we want to do. It is not their purpose, it is none of their business. They work for us, not the other way around. We should make the rules, not them making rules for us that they exempt themselves from having to follow. Power to the People!

Applaud his courage and coming out, but leaving marriage rights up to states is not constructive. That is how we get the crazy quilt of differing laws and recognition or no recognition of lawful marriages, depending on state lines. We did that with interracial marriage and it was not workable. Also, a state can say gays can marry then new pols come to power and things change. Leaves too many people at the mercy of current local pressures.
If a church doesn't want to preform a particular marriage, the couple can go to a church that does, or just to a civil official. The state (federal or local) doesn't tell the churches what to do, that is a red herring. Churches should have no voice in defining what the government allows as marriage. To let any or all churches decide what constitutes a legal marriage would be a gross violation of the separation of church and state. The sheriff is trying to garner support or at least divert attention from his personal situation. He is in a pretty conservative area and has to play to that audience. He is grasping at straw and straw man arguments.
His personal relationships and behavior has naught to do with churches, federal government v states rights, or marriage laws. One hopes the gentleman finds some peace of mind. He seems a bit adrift now and he is tossing a lot of sand in the air to confuse some issues. Perhaps this has taken him aback and he is a bit rattled. He seems to be floundering and muddling issues. He might stop and take a bit of time to really consider what he wants to say instead of just blindly reacting. We all get time to breathe and think before answering questions.
Marriage should be allowed between any two consenting adults and that should be enforced at a federal level so committed couples cannot have their lawful marriages tampered with by whims on the state level. What churches want is only a matter for their memberships, they do not get to impact the legal definition of marriage. Your church has NO rights to define MY relationships.
We ALL have the right to marry the partner of our choice, or none of us have safe marriages.

Seems he is just pandering to his RW constituency by his clumsy recitation of RW talking points.
He knows his being gay means he will be treated differently. He is trying to keep his job and move up to bigger things and evidently he will (currently) say anything he thinks will help.
His military and law enforcement work suggests he has courage. Given time, perhaps he can apply that to his personal life and how he relates in public.
