Ron Paul: Hemp is a good product

Texas Rep. Ron Paul praised the industrial crop hemp during a campaign stop in North Dakota on Monday.

“There is no reason, in a free society, that farmers shouldn’t be allowed to raise hemp,” Paul said, according to the Associated Press. “Hemp is a good product.”

Hemp, a crop related to marijuana, is grown in Canada and other countries to make textiles and numerous other goods. But in the United States the cultivation of hemp is prohibited by federal law, even though it has little to no psychoactive effects.

Paul and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) introduced legislation in 2009 that would have legalized the cultivation of hemp. But the bill never made it out of the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

“It is unfortunate that the federal government has stood in the way of American farmers, including many who are struggling to make ends meet, from competing in the global industrial hemp market,” Paul said in 2009.

“The founders of our nation, some of whom grew hemp, would surely find that federal restrictions on farmers growing a safe and profitable crop on their own land are inconsistent with the constitutional guarantee of a limited, restrained federal government.”

    • wow. my uncle zeppo thinks hemp is good too, and while i appreciate his wisdom, who cares what another old man thinks? we need to stop scooping up the crumbs like they were gold, and talk about getting political hacks like ron paul and the entire electoral system OUT of the news, OUT of the discussion, and OUT of power!

    • Thank you Sir for caring enough to educate those who do not understand about our great natural resource, "HEMP". I wish you could of met my friend Jack Herer who's wisdom is written in his book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes". It's history document for ever....

I honestly believe you are a deluded and disingenuous Ron Paul supporter, I encourage you to research Ron Paul. If you are thorough and honest in your research you will find he is a bible thumping, misogynistic, homophobic, racist. However, it has been my experience that Ron Paul supporters are more often than not white supremacists in hiding and/or hopelessly confused.

      Good luck with that.

he wanted government to respect civil liberties without undermining them. he thought people could have done things without forcing it which he believes caused more tension.

    • Hemp for industry 'would' bring jobs back to America. Grown in America, leading to 'made in America'. It's hard to find products made in America today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kybQTtnJjQA Hemp for Industry video about things which could be made today from hemp.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne9UF-pFhJY Hemp for Victory video, produced by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1942.

Hemp lead America to victory in the past and could do it in the future!

Educate, innovate, build, utilizing hemp. A renewable resource now illegal to grow. IMHO, the laws against hemp are working to keep a natural competitor off the market. Corporations know people would buy industrial hemp products, before buying the synthetic products now polluting our planet.

http://www.jackherer.com/thebook/ "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" contains facts about cannabis hemp and the documentation to back up the facts. Politicians won't talk about the book, because they can't lie, when the facts are used against them. It's easier to ignore the facts.

Facts matter! The truth matters more!

A little more food for thought, Chapter 9 from "The Emperor Wears No Clothes",

In the 1920s, the early oil barons such as Rockefeller of Standard Oil, Rothschild of Shell, etc., became paranoically aware of the possibilities of Henry Ford’s vision of cheap methanol fuel, * and they kept oil prices incredibly low – between $1 and $4 per barrel (there are 42 gallons in an oil barrel) until 1970 – almost 50 years! Then, once they were finally sure of the lack of competition, the price of oil jumped to almost $60+ per barrel over the next 30 years.

Richard Nixon actually started the war on cannabis in the early 70's. He was told he was wrong, but he did it anyway. **Then, once they were finally sure of the lack of competition, the price of oil jumped to almost $60+ per barrel over the next 30 years.

      A little more from http://www.jackherer.com/thebook/chapter-nine/
      * Henry Ford grew cannabis/hemp/marijuana on his estate after 1937, possibly to prove the cheapness of methanol production at Iron Mountain. He made plastic cars with wheat straw, hemp and sisal. (Popular Mechanics, Dec. 1941, “Pinch Hitters for Defense.”) In 1892, Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel engine, which he intended to fuel “by a variety of fuels, especially vegetable and seed oils.”

Fuel is not synonymous with petroleum and coal. Biomass energy systems can supply a sustainable source of fuel and will create millions of new clean jobs. Hemp biomass derived fuels and oils can replace every type of fossil fuel energy product.

During transpiration, the growing hemp plants “breathe in” CO2 (carbon dioxide) to build cell structure; the leftover oxygen is breathed out, replenishing Earth’s air supply. Then when the carbon rich hemp biomass is burned for energy the CO2 is released back into the air. The CO2 cycle comes close to ecological balance when the new fuel crop is grown the next year. Growing trees keeps 10 times the carbon dioxide in the Earth by keeping the infrastructure of the microbes, insects, plants, fungi, etc. alive for each tree. The older and bigger the tree, the more carbon dioxide is kept out of the atmosphere.

(Not all of the biomass crop gets converted into fuels. Some leaves, stalk stubble and all of the roots remain in the field as crop residues. This carbon rich organic matter adds to the soil fertility, and with each passing season a little more carbon dioxide from the air enters the soil, so the biomass fuel crops slowly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide from our polluted atmosphere.)

"The Emperor Wears No Clothes" by Jack Herer. One can't be spun with disinformation, once one knows the facts.

What you need to to grasp or understand clearly is the FACT that hemp is not smoked. In modern times, hemp has been used for industrial purposes including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food and fuel with modest commercial success. Since 2007, commercial success of hemp food products has grown considerably.

OK, so he wants to legalize industrial hemp. He also supports legalization of marijuana. So do I, although I think there are some isuues that need to be worked out. I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that some people who want to see marijuana legalized look at him as their guiding light. If candidates would be more forthright about their position I would have a better appreciation for them. He says "hemp is a good product" and those who associate hemp with cannibis think, "cool, he's on our side" when in fact he's talking about textiles. Or is he? And why is industrial hemp banned if it won't get you high? This whole conversation takes on an "I smoked but I didn't inhale" feel to it. I believe marijuana is on the slow road to legalization but it probably won't happen with the crotchety old farts we currently have in congress. (I'm not talking about RP here, I'm thinking more along the lines of the Orrin Hatch types.) I would love to see someone in Congress really champion legalization but so far no one seems willing to champion the issue the way it needs to be championed to change the mindset, but if he or she did I think that congressman/woman would find more support than anticipated.

Ron Paul is just making sense all around, consistently on hemp and marijuana-related drug laws.

Whether you think he's pandering or not, he's keeping sensible national issues on the forefront, allowing citizens and other politicians to hear about something else besides the typical election wedge issues (gay marriage, religion abortion etc).

It 'IS' a good product! We need more politicians willing to speak up. The information about hemp is out there. You may chose to close your eyes to the fact that hemp could create jobs in America.

Also, hemp helps the environment. Here's a link to an article about industrial hemp, planted by Chernobyl. http://rmiglobal.org/2011/03/15/hemp-revival-chernobyl-nuclear-waste-absorbing-p... "Hemp Revival : Chernobyl, Nuclear Waste Absorbing Plants Can Save North America". With the problems created by the Nuclear accident in Japan, it may be a good time to take pre-emptive action to remove radiation, while we still can.

Just sayin ...... I wish more politicians were willing to talk about the issue. They won't because the 'facts' are against them.

    • This where Ron Paul and I are in total agreement! Hemp is probably the most generous plant on the planet. The seeds are highly nutritional, the compressed blocks make an excellent building material--lighter than concrete blocks, termites hate it, self insulating and CHEAP....makes better fiber for clothing than cotton or silk...better pulp for paper...probably better than corn for ethanol. Where's the beef? WHY are we NOT growing acres of it?

This has nothing to do with drugs. Or health insurance. Or the freedom to not take care of yourself.

This is about Hemp as a product, and increasing America's viability in the world market.

Seems like you have a grudge or are carrying some irrelevant hostilities to an otherwise good proposal. Way to stay on topic.
