Residents of Colorado will have the opportunity this November to legalize marijuana possession and allow regulated sales of marijuana in their state.
The Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler on Monday certified a ballot initiative for the state’s November general election after Denver-based activists gathered more than 170,000 signatures.
If approved by voters, the Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act would allow for the limited possession and cultivation of cannabis by adults age 21 and over. It would also allow the state and local governments to enact regulations on the commercial production and distribution of marijuana, as well giving local governments the option to prohibit marijuana sales altogether.
“This could be a watershed year in the decades-long struggle to end marijuana prohibition in this country,” said Art Way, Colorado manager of the Drug Policy Alliance. “Marijuana prohibition is counterproductive to the health and public safety of our communities. It fuels a massive, increasingly brutal underground economy, wastes billions of dollars in scarce law enforcement resources, and makes criminals out of millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens.”
Last year, Colorado became the first state in the nation to begin issuing licenses for businesses that sell medical marijuana and marijuana-infused products and also formally asked the Drug Enforcement Agency to reclassify marijuana. Currently, the DEA classifies marijuana as a schedule I drug: the most restrictive classification reserved for dangerous drugs with no real medical value.
Although Colorado has legalized medical marijuana, those who distribute the drug still risk running afoul of federal law. The Obama administration’s Department of Justice has made a practice of not prosecuting medical marijuana patients in states where the drug has been approved, but it still considers distributors to be fair game for arrest.
In January, U.S. Attorney John Walsh sent letters to 23 medical marijuana dispensaries in Colorado, warning them that they faced legal repercussions if they did not close down within 45 days.

This is a huge deal because it's being back by growers and distributors, who have the funds to campaign aggressively for legalization. If they succeed, they will have created a legalization blueprint for other states!

I was going to refer people to Jackherer.com, but the site is no longer available. Instead of being filled with facts, it is now filled with:
"Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here."
NO FACTS! You can't quote facts, if they remove them from view. Sad, sad, sad!
The facts can't be changed, but they can be hidden and distorted. Shame, shame, shame!
Buy and share the book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" before they make it disappear too. The front half of the book is complete with cannabis hemp facts and the back half is actual copies of the documentation to back up the facts.

Waaaay back when I had a part time job cleaning in a shopping mall to pay for college, they had some false arrillia (not sure if that's the way to spell it) planted in the green spaces to provide a small hint of nature in that un-natural setting. The plant looks just like the picture above except the leaves aren't serrated. Within days of replanting, there would be nothing left but stalks. I bet someone got a big kick out of playing with the minds of the uninformed who were sure they found a "seceret" planting of M.J. in the mall. (This was in Columbus Ohio for the curious.)

Last election there was a Medical Marijuana bill on the ballot in NC but almost Nobody knew about it. At least 19 out of 20 people I talked to about it did not know anything about it till I mentioned it. In NC the churches have Major influence over what is reported by the news and they threatened to pull support from any channel that even mentioned it. Not surprising that it was defeated by a Large margin because Many supporters are notorious for not voting in most elections.

Another good reason to VOTE in the coming elections. Once it is legalized other states will see the amount of voter support And the amount of revenue generated then it will become a snowball effect around the country, but of coarse there will be a few holdouts, mainly in the south, because of church influences combined with money from big pharma and Many other corporations and organizations that make money on it being illegal that will keep them “dry”. *(The Cartels will also spend massive amounts of money to keep it illegal and are already planning their strategy)

Actually, Yes. I am an optimist and as such I feel that things will turn around for Many reasons if the TeaPublicans are defeated. (Notice I didn't say "if the Dems are elected")
Obama Has stated previously that he believes that current Marijuana laws are bad without actually stating that he is ‘pro-legalization’ because it is still a very dangerous political stance in Most of this country. I feel that he has smartly ‘dodged’ the question many times during his first term and I feel that he will actually come out in Favor of at least Medical Marijuana in his second term when he no longer has to worry about being elected.
Optimism my friend. ;-)

I understand your frustration with the way things have gone during his first term and I am with you, but I think that he is only allowing a department of government to do it’s job, though I feel they have gone Too far. Jimmy Carter came out in support of Legalization before his second term and look what happened. I know, it was a different time and there were other issues, but his support still hurt him in the South, even in his home state of Georgia. This is about what is Possible. The federal government should start the debate to allow the states to decide their marijuana laws. This is one of the few instances which I believe in state rights. The government has had a monopoly on Marijuana ever since the Marijuana Stamp Act was enacted. It has benefited tremendously from making it illegal by allowing many industries to thrive in Marijuana's absence. If Cannabis had been allowed to continue in the market place of capitalism, it would have been King and there wouldn't be such inequity in capital holdings between the Middle Class and the Elites. We are talking about 100's of billions of dollars of economic movement that this plant can generate for millions of Americans.
Legalization Nation Wide would be on the same level as the discovery of a new high demand product that practically anyone could profit from and the wealth generated would be distributed more evenly than profits from natural resources that require billions of dollars of investment just to get started. How much money does it take to get started producing cannabis? A fraction of what it costs to setup a solar power plant, an oil rig, or even a wood products manufacturing plant.

Most definitely, yes. The DuPont Dynasty couldn't have gotten their
lucrative G contract to produce nylon for such extensive applications
to re4place Hemp with if they couldn't outlaw their competitor first.
if DuPont didn't help J.Edgar Hoover & Anslinger & Hearst engineer the
1st Prohibition in 1937. Though that was overturned by SCOTUS in
1972, Tricky Dick- Nixon- before- he- dicks- you was already hot to
enact another Prohibition Statute because he associated the Occupy
anti War Protest movement of the 1960s/1970s with MJ use. He made
things worse for the Federal Prohibition by creating the D.E.A. And
after Rockefeller engineered the draconian anti drug laws here in N.Y.,,
it took State Senators Barclay & Gottfried another 4 years to enact
a decrim law which we've had,and has worked satisfactorily ever since. In Jamaica they have a dollar currency too. Though the currency
exchange rate is paltry compared with the U.S. dollar, devalued as
it is,MJ is such Green Gold, as Oil is Black Gold, that as such an
extemely valuable commodity, Jamaican exports of ganja actiuauly
subsidize the value of the Jamaican dollar. I'm glad the Patriots of
the 1st American Revolutionary protest movement aren't alive in the
flesh to see how badly modern American citizens have fucked up
the God given natural treasure of Cannabis & industrial Hemp for
an oligarchy to sit on us with like an elephant. They used Hemp to
produce colonial currency hand written with the penalty of death
warning on it for counterfeiting forgers because colonial Hemp
currency was used to redeem Gold, Silver, Copper as US Notes
were before Big Oil, the CIA & Fed Banksters staged their coup on
our Treasury over JFK's dead body in 1965. The colonials' Gold &
Silver & Copper was very scarce in those days, when the use of
Cannabis as medicine was commonplace & widespread. And when
the colonials used MJ & Hemp to barter with to avoid taxes, and
to spare their semi/precious metal hard currency, which was always
in short supply, as it came from England, France, or Spain. Jubal,
the History channel is airing a documentary entitled Empire of Industry
currently. It features the DuPont Dynasty interfering with American
affairs of State since the time of Thomas Jefferson, & Washington,
who had vast fields of both MJ, and Hemp growing on their Virginia
Plantations for commerce during the 1700s. Great show to watch. - 1 year ago

This is wonderful news! I was so sure the Colorado legislature was going to cheat again, and throw out just enough petition signatures to keep the measure off the ballot. The guys that worked to get the proposition on the ballot are amazing heroes. Not just because people want access to marijuana- this is so much more important than that- the privatized prison system has been lobbying- with success- for harsher minimum sentences for minor drug offenses. With legalization, the private prison company gets taken down a notch in their influence. It's a real victory for citizens.

I think that it is a good thing that the citizens of Colorado will get the opportunity to vote for or against the legalization of marijuana.
It is a win/win proposition for the State and the citizens. The State will increase much needed revenue through taxation, and citizens that use marijuana for medical and other purposes will be free of criminalization.
