Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has a response to rival Newt Gingrich’s claim that he’s a weak frontrunner: I know I am but what are you?
On Sunday, Gingrich told Fox News host Chris Wallace that the former Massachusetts governor had one of the most anemic campaigns in the last 100 years.
“The fact is that Romney is probably the weakest Republican frontrunner since Leonard Wood in 1920, and Wood ultimately lost on the 10th ballot,” the former House Speaker asserted.
Gingrich was referring Gen. Leonard Wood, who was considered the Republican frontrunner in 1920 but eventually lost the nomination to Warren G. Harding at the convention.
“It’s funny to listen to these guys,” Romney told Fox News host Gretchen Carlson on Monday. “They are saying what they wish to be the case but what happens not to be the case.”
“If I’m a weak frontrunner then what does that make Newt Gingrich because I’m well ahead of him?” he added.
Carlson noted that Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has also charged that Romney “can’t close the deal.”
“Oh, we’re closing the deal, state by state, delegate by delegate,” Romney insisted. “I’ve got by far the most votes among Republicans so far.”

I love how people sell Newt Gingrich short. This guy debates like no other. I'd be scared to argue with him. He's made it this far riding on ideals and not superpac capital. His ideas on the $2.50 gas is a little out there but then again the last guy told us he'd Change the whole country so what are promises right?
I'm pretty sure if we tapped that pipeline in North Dakota and Alaska we could get it cheaper. I'm sure some expert on the subjects gonna argue to me about buyer confidence and subsidies and all kinds of bullshit how we can't do it but I don't believe you. Gas was cheap when I was a kid and I'm 24. It seems like a few cents raise in a few years would garner billions and billions over the years but I can't imagine what kind of money is being funneled out of this country when the price has gone up in the dollar amounts in the last few decades.
Newt Gingrich had an idea to make an effort to change something specific in this country and he sounded confident when he said it. Actually to tell you the truth it's the only specific promise I've heard from any of them. And to tell you the truth it sounds a little more plausible then some crazy new fuel from algae that some hippy discovered paired with wind turbines and solar panels in the front yard to charge my hydrogen fuel cell vehicle so that I don't have to pay anyone for energy ever.

Wow, Mittens, that's one helluva campaign strategy. 'I may be a loser who will provide no coattails for down ticket candidates because so few people bother to vote for me in the primaries, but I'm better than a newt.'
The GOP just doesn't want to win this one.

Oh Mittens, it makes you and out of touch elitist snowflake. Oh wait, you already were that before you started the campaign.
I think that if this is Mitt "the corporation personhood person" Romney's best response, it makes him out as desperate. - 1 year ago
