Fox News host: Dems ‘invented’ war on women because ‘stimulus didn’t work’

One Fox News host on Monday asserted that Democrats had concocted the “phony” Republican war on women to divert attention from high gas prices and a slow economic recovery.

Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy noted that gas prices on Catalina Island in California were around $7 a gallon and President Barack Obama could not use the economy as campaign issue.

“You know, the stimulus didn’t work out so well and he’s got a lot of problems,” Doocy explained. “So in the last couple of months what they have done, the Democrats, is that they have invented this phony war on women. They said Republicans are against women.”

“There’s not really a war on women. There’s a war for women because they would like to have as many women vote for their candidate,” he added.

During a Sunday interview on CNN, host Candy Crowley asked Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) if it was unfair to call GOP policies a “war on women.”

“The policies that have come out of the Republican Party, saying that we should have a debate again over contraception and whether we should have access to it and it should be affordable, saying that — like Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin, you know, he tried to quietly repeal the Equal Pay Act,” Wasserman Schultz noted. “Women aren’t going to stand for that. Governor Walker just signed a bill that repeals the equal pay law they had in Wisconsin for years.”

She continued: “You have Republicans who have engaged themselves for the entire Congress trying to redefine rape as only being forcible rape, defunding Planned Parenthood and family planning programs. The Lilly Ledbetter Act — the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act put teeth behind the notion that women deserve equal pay for equal work. That was the first bill the President Obama signed into law. The overwhelming majority of Republicans serving in Congress voted against it.”

“So, the focus of the Republican Party on turning back the clock for women really is something that is unacceptable and shows how callous and insensitive they are towards women’s priorities.”

But Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) told Crowley that Democrats were wrong to accuse Republicans of waging a war on women.

“We’ve got to quit exaggerating our political differences,” Cleaver said, adding that it was also wrong for Republicans to accuse Democrats of a “war on religion.”

A USA Today/Gallup survey of 12 of the top battleground states recently found that likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney had lost 14 points among women in the months after he and many other Republicans objected to mandating that contraception be covered by the health insurance offered by religious institutions. Six in 10 voters favored Obama, while only 30 percent supported Romney.

    • Denial, minimizing, blaming are all tactics used to control. Just by saying it ain't so, doesn't make it so. They completely avoid dealing with facts about the legislation that's causing women to have to stand up once again for their rights and apparently not helping the GOP.

      The guys and gals over at Fox are doing their jobs; which is to disrupt our sense of reality. It doesn't matter what you pen/call it, when women have to fight for their rights. Again than there clearly is an antagonist and it's the GOP.

      - Every GOP Senator voted AGAINST Equal Pay for Women Act

      - Every GOP Senator voted AGAINST Al Franken's Anti-Rape Amendment

      - Every GOP member vote FOR Anti-Safe Abortion Legislation

      - Every GOP member vote FOR Blunt/Rubio Anti-Women's Equal Health Coverage Amendment. While Blunt/Rubio Amendment does not allow employer to deny men employee health coverage for Vasectomy, the Blunt/Rubio Amendment allows Employer to deny female employees & female dependents: contraception, tubes tied, and hysterectomies.

      - GOP Redefine Rape

      - GOP write legislation to probe metal prongs up a woman's vagina

      - GOP change legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to "accuser"

      - GOP write legislation that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (South Dakota GOP)

      - GOP write legislation to cut nearly a billion dollars of aid to low-income pregnant women, mothers, babies, and kids.

      - GOP write legislation that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.

      - GOP write law cutting ALL funding for low-income kids saying "Women should really be home with the kids, not out working (Maryland)

      - GOP Cut Funding for Head Start, by $1 Billion.

      - Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women: GOP write Bill to CUT funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.

      - GOP Candidates for President vow and pledge to Cut Funding for Planned Parenthood.

      - GOP voted for a Amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers.

      - GOP write Bill to eliminate all funds for Federal Family Planning Program.

      Bill fixed the last debt in 8 years & not as high as now!

      And you pay taxes, to pay for the living of the low pay workers, that
      their work place won't pay a living wage. The poor makes things cost more.

      But they sure are complaining about gas prices and not being able to afford nice handbags, makeup and that summer vacation though.

      You can't think of anyone ticked off by attacks on Planned Parenthood or by an attempt to ban coverage of birth control by private insurance?

      How about Scott Walker's ban on state courts enforcing wage equality? No women you know would be pissed off by that?

      If you combine that with the fact that Republicans *aren't* campaigning on the economy primarily, have not addressed it in the majorities they won in their congresses both state and federal and, when they have, insist only on cutting public budgets or slashing environmental regulations, what exactly is supposed to be concluded?

      Just because it's election rhetoric doesn't mean it's wrong. Your bullshit detector is broken.

      Hell, just based on raw statistics it's a bad idea to agree with FOX and Friends. So you're losing even by stochastic standards here. That's pretty bad.

      I can seriously say that I do not. You can point to all the instances that you want and try to claim that they affect ALL women, but that doens't make it true.

      I'm not saying that these attemps at reigning in Planned Parenthood are either right or wrong, but they represent a tiny fraction of women.

      Believe it or not, not every woman who gets pregnant is looking at abortion as a first choice. Most of the women I know are either looking to have children, and if they got pregnant are keeping the children, and if they did have an abortion, I probably don't know them well enough to be privy to that information anyways.

      If Scott Walker's decisions on equal pay affects women at all, it's mostly on the state level. It's hardly a "war on women."

      I maintain that women are just as free as they were when they were first "liberated." Maybe even more so, and that this war on women rhetoric is just weak campaign sloganeering, and most women I talk to are more concerned about gas prices and that summer trip they can't take.

      My point was that if there is such a thing as a "war on women," then it affects such a small percent of women that it should be called a "war on women who wish to have state sponsored abortion on demand."

      It is terrible that Romney's GOP has accused Obama of starting a war on women. I think you have every right to be upset about it.
