During a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday, Drug Enforcement Administrator Michele Leonhart repeatedly refused to admit that anything was more addictive or harmful than marijuana.
Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado pressed Leonhart on whether illegal drugs like methamphetamine and crack, as well as legal prescription drugs, caused greater harm to public health compared to marijuana. But within a three minute time-span, Leonhart dodged his questions eleven times.
“Is crack worse for a person than marijuana?” Polis, who has called for an end the prohibition on marijuana, asked.
“I believe all illegal drugs are bad,” Leonhart responded.
“Is methamphetamine worse for somebody’s health than marijuana?” Polis continued. “Is heroin worse for somebody’s health than marijuana?”
“Again, all drugs,” Leonhart began to say, only to be cut off by Polis.
“Yes, no, or I don’t know?” Polis said. “If you don’t know this, you can look this up. As the chief administrator for the Drug Enforcement Agency, I’m asking a very straightforward question.”
Leonhart said that heroin was highly addictive, but accused Polis of asking a “subjective” question. After being pressed further, she conceded that heroin was more addictive than marijuana, but added “some people become addicted marijuana and some people become addicted to methamphetamine.”
Leonhart was nominated to be the Deputy Administrator of the DEA by then-President Bush in 2003 and confirmed by the Senate in 2004. She became the acting Administrator of the DEA after the former Administrator, Karen P. Tandy, resigned in 2007. Obama nominated Leonhart to the position in 2010.

Both are addictive? WTF? Has she read a SINGLE scientific report on the substances she's paid to control? Like I've said 100 times....DEA is welfare for conservatives. Free jobs for folks who pretend to be holier than thou. And yet they can't accomplish their mission. Ever. WASTE of 2 billion per year. AND archaic drug laws prevent a huge sector of the economy from ever taking off. Also empowers cartels. But if they admit that, they lose their jobs.

She is "full of it"!! Pot is illegal primarily because of the fear of people like Hurst, who wanted it outlawed due to the competition in the paper industry. Hurst owned large forests for making paper, and hemp is better for paper than wood.

Polis is awesome. He just kept backing her into the corner trying to make her admit that she was clueless, or at the very least, wasn't concerned with facts. It's too bad the power structure IS the way it is... but it's representatives like him that make me think we might be able to overturn some of our more corrupt laws.

She has to repeat the same 'talking points', or they loose all credibility if they start talking about facts. The facts are against them, so they ignore them. Shame on them.
IMHO, the war on cannabis is a ruse. The war is actually on hemp, but as long as they say, drugs, drugs, drugs, they can ignore the real possibilities of industrial hemp.
Politicians have spun the war on cannabis for political gain. I think their political gain came from keeping the competition off the market, by spinning drugs, drugs, drugs.
People are waking up to the facts. Facts matter. The truth matters more and the American people know it. Read the book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" by Jack Herer. It's 50% facts and 50% documentation to back up the facts.
http://www.jackherer.com/thebook/ Documented facts leads to truth, spun opinion leads people away from the truth. Which one do you trust? Trust is earned. So is shame.

Administrator Michele Leonhart was at the ...C-Span-3 on TV, the Capital Hill, Director Senator Sheldon...she was there I saw her on TV...this is what was shared.
. June 30, 2011, C-Span-3 on TV, the Capital Hill, Director Senator Sheldon, Senate Judiciary Sub Committee for Crime and Terrorism. Announcement Oxy. Heroin, this Heroin Health Care Concept, in 2007 that 27,000 Americans died, from this Opioid.Also- between Canada and the USA, 1.2 million people died from Oxy Heroin between 9/11 to 2011.
So if this Oxy Heroin is so good for the economy, where is the money ?She lied and I want the world to know.

Never mind that you can DIE from alcohol withdrawal, people do every year. Never mind that abuse of prescription drugs kills thousands a year, and it is incredibly difficult to prove anyone dies from using weed. Barry O has continued to prop up the decades of garbage that is the epic fail of the war on drugs. Mittens will do same should he get elected, big pharma owns his ass.

Yup. If people realized they could grow all their own medicine (I'm not just talking about weed, there are lots of beneficial plants we can all use) the system would be pretty shaken. Big pharma doesn't like people knowing that sour sop fruits have been shown to kill cancer cells... or that some types of mushrooms might actually kill the aids virus...
That would hurt their bottom line :(

Too many gov't jobs on the line to legalize pot, and decriminalize drugs. Addicts are addicts not criminals until made to commit crimes to support addiction to drugs that are illegal. Between DEA, FBI, State police drug enforcement agencies, tens of thousands of jobs are on the line. Personnally I say legalize pot, decriminalize drugs and send all the idiots to the Mexican border to control it. Hard core drug addicts that refuse treatment will ultimately kill themselves, those who wish to seek treatment could get it, and everyone could enjoy a joint, blunt, volcano or bong without being arrested.

How long will the world continue to buy this "Reefer Madness?" The massive propaganda campaign against marijuana has been so effective that Leonhart believes what she is saying. She's probably never smoked pot or lost a friend to meth.
Marijuana, which definitely has medical uses, needs to be removed from Schedule One.
Continuing with business as usual, means chemo patients and others, suffer needlessly. Mexican drug cartels are taking over our national forests. We're filling our prisons. Our soldiers are in Columbia. All this and more for an herb that is safer than aspirin and NOT PHYSICALLY ADDICTIVE. - 11 months ago

WAR ON DRUGS = WAR ON AMERICANS!
I won't watch more bullshit just to confirm what we all already know is bullshit. Peeps, we don't have to continue living with this charade of a War On Drugs, when we all know it's merely another mechanism for transforming our nickels and dimes into the dollars of the 1%! Even we non pot smokers need to march up the Capitol steps in the hundreds of thousands, with joints between our lips, and demand that Congress get their filthy hands out of our pockets to support a bogus war on drugs, which is actually a War On The People, and LEGALIZE -not just decriminalize- drugs. It's time to tell them that we will not support the corporate welfare that the theft of the People's money, disguised as a "War On Drugs," truly is. When the government is warring on us in forms such as this, it's time to return the favor!

Hard to even watch. Almost had to burn one to endure the pain!
Leonhart became Deputy Director DEA in 2004 under Bush. The Director in 2010.
Wikipedia: "Leonhart has consistently turned down research into the therapeutic and medicinal benefits of marijuana, and has a track record of undermining state law with regard to legal medical marijuana. Recently several pro-legalisation agencies have called on President Obama to withdraw his support of Leonhart, including SSDP, MPP, NORML, LEAP, and DPA."
www.alternet.org/drugs/147631/obama_wants_a_bush_crony_appointed_as_a_top_drug_e...
Hard to point fingers here since Obama rolled with her too. She seems to be a classic Bush-style political payoff appointee who will roll with whatever bullshit she's told to roll with. I suspect Obama kept her for much the same reason. He owes her nothing so if/when she becomes a political liability, she's gone. I'd say we can start the countdown on that.
Maybe she was already gone. It's odd for a congressman to hammer an administrator when his guy is president. Perhaps Polis is setting her up purposefully? Doing a little dirty work for the Big Guy?(Hey... congressman from Colorado. Nice work out there, KB)

What a dim-witted DEA agent....might as well replace these agents with robots, because the kind of answers and interactions they appear to be capable of, are no different than interacting with a machine. She is programmed to recite a script, and does not appear to even be capable of processing the question Polis is asking her....complete refusal to comprehend the words "better" or "worse."
One interesting point she did make....the decision to make marijuana an illegal or legal substance does and has resided with Congress from Day 1 of the inane drug war. Long story short, it is the assholes we elect who are refusing to budge on this issue.

She's not smoking crack or an airhead. She's a liar, and in order to advocate for the continuing prohibition of marijuana you have to be willing to lie through your teeth.
Asking a D.E.A. official whether marijuana is dangerous is outright stupid. What are they going to say? "There is no dangerous effects connected to marijuana use, but it should be illegal to protect our budget."
Asking a law enforcement official whether marijuana should be legalized is like asking an athlete if sport should be criminalized. The conflict of interest is overwhelming. The instant this committee asked the D.E.A. for their opinion the whole procedure became nothing more than a horse and pony show. The D.E.A. has no business giving opinions on drug laws.
I hope this House Judiciary Committee asked scientists what the truth about marijuana is.

Well. Sugar is also highly addictive. So is caffeine... and alcohol... and sex... and the worst one of all: Money!
Because something is addictive and / or damaging has nothing to do with legality. The government makes things illegal on ONE premise: "can we make money off of this?" ... in the case of Cocaine (crack) in particular... this was imported by the CIA (The Iran Contra) then spread through the populace... while at the same time, being vilified by the media (read: government propaganda machine) to fuel the very profitable drug war... not to mention give money to the prison systems.
So what does this say about our "priorities", exactly?
We are addicted to money. The worst drug of all. This addiction is so strong, we'll kill the entire planet, and every one/thing on it to no end.
Maybe money should be illegal.
