    • Won't happen. Didn't happen with the Brits, didn't happen with the Russians. No-win quicksand. Those people don't want foreign domination.

    • It's nice how American soldiers are trying to win over the people,but I think the mind state of the majority in those villages are set in their ways unlike most Americans who are easily impressed. I still would like to believe people are able to change though.

    • So initially I thought this story about the difficulty of winning Hearts and Minds was relevant in light of the war in Iraq. As I returned to Afghanistan this past January, I realized that it was still just as dire a struggle in Afghanistan as when I had been there a year and a half previously. I heard comments on the streets saying "At least the Russians built schools." That is not winning hearts and minds.

    • It's sad that the "sister war" in Iraq drained public attention, not to mention resources, from the conflict in Afghanistan before it was fully resolved. It's a sad possibility that both of these countries may wind up as renewed havens for terrorism, despite the best efforts of the US military.
