    • Great piece and I am shocked that Danielle was able to convince the court to give her custody of her daughter. I reckon that is a case of where the courts have literally failed a child.

    • Sometimes, when editing a pod, the footage hits you on an unexpected emotional level. When I was cutting this piece, there was actually a little bit of footage on the tape of Kaj playing with the little girl from the end of the piece. And she seemed like such a sweet little kid, and I physically had to get up and walk away from the computer for a while. I usually don't get that affected by a piece, but in this case, seeing the situation she was in made me really sad. And I remember going to find Tracey to talk about how that section made me feel. Every once in a while, that little girl's face pops into my head, and I hope that she's okay.

    • Kaj and I sensed that "Stevie" was really hopeful that he would turn his life around. He would tell us stories about his kids and how he himself wanted to go back to school.

      But a few months ago, I got an email from our ICE Task Force contact in Hawaii who informed me that "Stevie" got arrested again for drug charges. This time there were firearms involved and he was looking at federal charges. This news was just a startling reminder of how much of an epidemic ICE is on the islands, and how difficult it is to find a way out.
