    • The US declared the Kurdish autonomous region a no-fly-zone in 91 and have been helping the Peshmerga keep it secure since then. In exchange, the Kurds have kept their eye on Iran and the Bathist regime for the US., providing intelligence and a proxy militia to be used if necessary. No doubt that the US pulling out of Kurdistan may leave it vulnerable to the Turks and every major power in the region, who all oppose Kurdish self determination. Of course with Turkey, it's especially thorny because they are also a key US ally. As relations between the Kurds or the Turks heat up, the US may one day have to choose which ally it likes better.

    • I've heard it argued that the US should maintain a presence in Kurdistan even if it withdraws from the rest of Iraq - both to bolster a potential democratic ally and to discourage a Turkish invasion. Any opinions out there?
