Os da Guiné até falam bem portugues, pensava que tinham mais sotaque.
Mas é incrível como a língua esta espalhada pelo mundo

This is absolutely excellent stuff. As a former resident of Gran Canaria I found it particularly interesting. Boat loads of immigrants continue to arrive on Canarian beaches on a weekly basis.

Thank you for this very informative story. It really exposes a major problem, but it also shows how much people value getting to Europe and North America for opportunities. Africa is being exploited not only by others, but also by it's own. It's sad.

I was in Nouadhibou several weeks ago making a film and nothing has changed, perhaps if anything it's got worse. We met many young men similar to the ones you talked to, all with the same drive to improve their lives and that sense of desperation.
Interestingly they all talked about what they call the 'mafias' that have developed in the town, with each country represented by their own specific group of people smugglers. It seemed that many of the migrants were more scared of the 'sharks' out of the water than the dangers of the sea crossing.

This is sort of the accompanying piece to African Exodus. We were actually working on this piece in Morocco when we learned of the new route in Mauritania.

Yeah, the part about Snoop Dogg and the American rap artists was really eye-opening for me. This flaunting of wealth -- the blingin', the flossin' -- in music videos is the modern day version of "the streets are paved with gold." We forget that thanks to the ubiquity of satellite dishes these images are being seen even in the most remote corners of the world. And I have a theory that what motivates people more than ever to migrate is the obvious disparity between, say, life in a small African village and the image of life in America or Europe that is constantly available on TV.

We often think of migration as a domestic issue. But the whole world is in flux with people on the move. Whether it's going from a poor village to a big city, or crossing borders, this mass movement of people is literally shaping how our world looks and functions. I would love to see more pods about this issue from other countries around the world.

Amazing images of a country we don't normally hear about. Loved the part about Snoop Dogg and Beyonce giving hope to these migrants. The globalization of pop culture is in full effect.

This is such a great look into a part of the immigration issue that is rarely explored. A good article in Voice of America was written about it last month: Check it: http://voanews.com/english/2007-07-31-voa26.cfm
