    • I thought this piece was really well done and representative of what the Syrians on the street are really like--warm and hospitable. This has nothing to do with the image depicted in the US media. When we lived in Turkey in 1978-80, we took a road trip into Syria and we were absolutely charmed. Not only was it beautiful, but also the people could not have been nicer and more welcoming.

Pieces like yours are important and could go a long way into eductating the American public that most people in these countries are good despite the politics of their leaders. You should continue doing this kind of on-the-street reporting all over the world. Keep up the good work!

    • Mariana and I had been trying to get back to Syria for some time and when the war broke out in Lebanon last summer, we finally got the go-ahead from the bosswoman Laura Ling. We shot this quick little "mood" piece as soon as we touched down and then spent a whole night looking for an internet cafe with a fast enough connection to send it. A couple of weeks later, when the war ended, we did a couple of more quick turn-around pieces. This time we sent it from our hotel in a dark and deserted corner of Beirut. See Returning to Hezbollah Country and Hezbollah Rises below.
