A new law just passed in France makes it illegal to film and broadcast acts of violence. A step forward against viral video violence or a step backward for civil liberties?

    • I haven seen this pod yet, but i think that any mode of censorship is B.S.. Thats one step closer to making people ignorant about the world and its behavior.

    • I think this law is a misguided response to a serious problem of violent videos on the Internet. I'd be curious to know the opinions of any French citizens out there, however. I know that the American perspective on free speech and civil liberties doesn't always mesh with the French perspective - for example, the controversy over wearing head scarves and other religious symbols in public schools. It's not always as simple as left-wing, right-wing, pro-liberties, pro-regulation; a lot of it has to do with a deeper philosophy regarding the balance between individual rights and social good.
I'm working with Christof and Lauren now on a piece about neo-Nazis in Russia which touches on the issue of violent viral videos .
