The Art of War

Thirty years of warfare, then what? As Americans wonder how long the U.S. will be in Iraq, Vanguard Producer Tracey Chang travels across the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, where 30 years of warfare between the U.S--backed Philippine Army and various Islamic insurgent, terrorist, and criminal groups have yielded a plan for peace that is neither surge nor withdrawal: Giving the largest and hardest-to-defeat insurgent group some of what it's demanding, while trying to eliminate the nastiest of the smaller terrorist and criminal groups.

    • Why does the US government classify MILF as an insurgent group rather than a terrorist group yet at the same time are providing military training and assistance to the Philippine army to combat them? Is it because they are less hard-liners than ASG? Seems like a very fine line between insurgent and terrorist...

I think that the most enlightening part of this pod is in reference to it's title- the art of war

      "winning without fighting..."

    • One person's 'terrorist' is another person's liberation fighter.
The U.S backed Philipino army is responsible for the death and destruction there.
By calling the MILF 'terrorist' you let the Bush agenda define the framework for your piece and undercut any real insight you might bring your viewers.
The largest organized terrorist force in the World today is
is U.S. state sponsored terrorism like its' support for the Philipine military.
The World Bank and IMF are not the answer either.
People want freedom from domination by foreign armies and foreign corporations.

    • "I love anchovies, I should have brought pizza with me!"

And the MILF soldiers practicing: "Bang bang! Bang!"

I had no idea there is so much turmoil in the Philippines, or so many cultural differences within the islands

    • extremely insightful pod. Another prime example of amazing journalism. oh yeah DanielleN, as soon as i saw the initials i realized why Tracey didn't abbreviate it to MILF.

    • Great job! I only had peripheral knowledge of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front mainly because the acronym is MILF but thank you for telling the story of a little covered section of the world.
I word with many Filipino nurses from all parts of the Phillipines so tomorrow will hopefully bring interesting conversation.
