The Port Arthur News caught up with Lauren and Tyler on their swing through Texas.

From the article:

From the moment Lauren Cerre stepped off the big Greyhound bus in Port Arthur, her nose for news got a good whiff of the city that lives and breathes in the shadow of the petrochemical industry.

The 25-year-old journalist from San Francisco was in Port Arthur this week to capture the concerns of young people across America. In Port Arthur, she interviewed young people, ages 18 to 25, on a variety of topics including air pollution in a city that is experiencing one of the largest industrial boons in the nation.

“From the taxi driver to the store clerk at the convenience store, everyone is aware the odor and air quality of Port Arthur. It’s just a matter of how they deal with it,” Cerre said during a telephone interview Thursday.

Port Arthur is one of 10 U.S. cities included in Current TV’s Vanguard Special, “The Great American Detour.” The show will air on Current TV in early October at a yet-to-be-determined date.

    • I actually worked in Port Aurtur back in 1998 for about a week. I was auditing a coal refining company that produced "green coke" for Aluminum smelters. It was one of the many oil by product compnaies in that area. After work we would have to drive our car through a mini car wash to get off the thick layer of carbon that had accumulated on our car throughout the day. I was appalled at the air quality and the amount of chemicals that were potentially harmful to humans and the wildlife. In fact, I asked a young waiter at one of the chain restaurants how he felt about the town. He mentioned that getting out is all he wanted because of the health problems that everyone was facing. Apparently, there is a larger prevalence of cancer in Port Arthur but no link has been drawn to the petro chemical industry. How is that possible? Ofcourse there is a link. Something needs to be done. I couldn't wait to get out of that wasteland.

I am interested to read about Lauren's experience in this town.
