Modern Day Pirates

Pirates in my head involved something u see in movies. Easy to identify. The messy beard, hooks, eye patch. The Disney works pretty much. This video helped to explain that pirates is no Disney movie. It's happening and it's hard to catch them. Personally, I think pirates is a big issue because they're attacking ships and because it's on sea it's hard to get immediate help. I think companies and the government should enforce the water and try to prevent from ships getting pirated.

I think the pirate issues in indonisia is not going to be completly solved in the near future (no matter many securities are added by the indonisia government). Those indonisia pirates are not seeking money for fun. They need the money for their own survival! people will do everything for survival and if you are trying to stop them, it means you killed them (they can't afford to buy food because they don't have the money).In order to solve the problem, other countries should help indonisia on econmic developement.

I find this video a little over exaggerated, it seemed like the pirates that they shown were very friendly and easy to find. In terms of the local law enforcement, I believe that they should enhance the security because it seemed like they had absolutely no influence during the video. That being said, when the Kaj filmed the patrolling officers at sea, it appeared as though he didn’t film all of the police.

I agree with Artem, in that more can be done by local law enforcement and navies alike to prevent instances like this from occurring. However, putting an end to piracy once and for all requires a much more multi-faceted approach, focusing on economic issues in Malacca and the surrounding areas that drive people to commit crimes such as these in the first place.

Although pirates are a huge threat for ships, cargo and people, they can be dealt with or avoided with extra force or security on board. Also I think the local police should arrange some fake ships to pass by and lead the pirates to a place of no escape and catch at least some of them in order to scare others from piracy in the future.

Whenever someone would say pirates, i would think about the disney pirates or the pirates of the caribbean. Learning that they were real was mindblowing. Finding out that they would steal from incoming cargo is horrible. why were there no gaurds to help protect the cargo, or the workers on the ship?
Or why no stop piracy from the beginning. Give the fishermen jobs or help them find some so they won't turn to the pirates for money.

I've learnt from this video that piracy is a direct result of the economy. But in this modern day, why hasn't anything been done to better assist people in Somalia, Malaysia and Indonesia? Also, if pirates wait on the water for incoming cargo ships, why hasn't authority tried or been able to stop them yet?

It is surprising to hear about modern pirates. I always thought that it had only existed in fantasies. I believe that this will be an on going issue. As the economy experiences its downfall, people would have no choice but to turn in to their values. In order to prevent this piracy business to expand further, the government should look into providing harsher punishments for these people as well as focusing on providing decent jobs for its citizens.

I am an Internet Lawyer who represents Orion Blastar and the Neo-Swashbucklers. My clients have been harassed and cyberbullied by Corndog67 and modern pirates use legal means to fight their enemies now. This is a clear cut violation of the US Patriot Act via cyberterrorism, cyberbullying, harassment, and libel. Since Current refuses to enforce their terms of service we will file a subpoena to get Corndog67's IP address and email unless Current gives my clients the information so they can file the FBI report. If Current complies with the law, we won't file a civil case against them and go public with this to the US and International media. I am sure that management and shareholders of this company do not want that.

I assure you this modern pirate group is real and had martial arts training in ninjitsu and other mixed martial arts and forms of war. We offer this peaceful legal solution as an alternative to violence.

Corndog67, I know Orion Blastar and the Neo-Swashbucklers. I assure you that they are real and legit. You are messing with the wrong group of people here. I would not want to be in your shoes and posting what insulting words that you did post.

I am in a group of modern pirates, we don't do the same stuff these classic pirates do. We give boat rides, we grow gardens and sell all organic food, we are truck drivers and crop dusters. We do non-violent stuff and earn our money the legal way.

But we know the old ways and moved to new legal ways. We can become privateers like Lord Francis Drake did for England and then fight the classic pirates using their own tactics against them. We love our country and freedoms and denounce these evil pirates.

We have a plan to buy or build wooden boats and then give vacation cruses on them using all organic bio diesel we grow and convert ourselves to make green technology. We plan on using solar and wind power as well for our fleet. We plan to take people on treasure hunter for finding sunken ships and recover lost treasure and maybe fight the evil pirates as we are good law abiding pirates. We are not corrupt, we are good people from all around the world. We are very diverse and if we are hired to fight these evil pirates, we will catch them and turn them over to the authorities and have them face justice. After all it takes a pirate to catch a pirate.

I myself am a computer geek and classic liberal or libertarian, I am not a Democrat or Republican, I am more like the US Founding Fathers and use pen names to write blogs against abuses of power, injustices, corruption, and evil pirates and other enemies of humanity. I am on humanity's good side and want to help not harm others. I am also a ninja and it makes me a ninja pirate as I studied many fighting styles, but martial arts teaches us to avoid fights if possible and use non-violent and peaceful means first and only use violence as a last resort and only in self defense of ourselves or others for the good of the world and to make it a better place.

I am like Batman or Spider-Man if they were pirates or ninjas or both. :)

I just saw this today, on HDNET, 3/28/2010. I get the feeling from the guy doing the show, that there is a lot of support for the pirates, that he identifies with them, sympathizes with them. Same with the responses here. A lot of sympathy for the criminals.
What a crock of horseshit. Say, because I don't have anything, it's OK for me to take something from someone driving by, because they have it better than me. What a load of bullshit. For one, stop having kids you cannot feed. Same with Haiti, same with Africa, same with Indonesia. Saying there is no other way than to steal is just giving in to pieces of shit that have no sense in what is right and wrong.

When the world starts saying that pirate ransom is the cost of doing business, is when any sense of civilization is lost. In my mind, if you threaten to kill my brothers, who are working on this boat, unless I give you a million dollar ransom, you should die. I think the major shipping countries of this world need to hire mercenaries, and protect what is theirs.

When these people have no money and no jobs, they tend to want to prosper from the money passing through their waters.
There is two different levels in piracy, the crime syndicates that set up these hits, and the lowdown recruits that they choose from poor villages

These modern day pirates have had a realization; this realization that they live in the middle of a huge trade market and can easily profit from pirating. There clearly is a lack of security if these people are able to take over massive cargo ships in small numbers. In the video the reports risked their lives and yet managed to find pirates. Now if they were able to discover their "secret hideout" why doesnt the government attempt to squeeze out the pirates and try to lower the overall piracy related crime. Ultimately it would benefit the country, the trade market and the owners and prevent the deaths of cargo ship workers. If the government of security personnel choose not to take further action than the least the owners who are transferring cargo can do it supply their workers with a means of security so they can defend themselves or a way of avoiding piracy attacks.

These journalists risked their lives to show us what is happening in another country and i believe the reason why they made this video was to make us realize how corrupt some nations are. I believe that instead of companies cutting off trades with Malaysia they should try to send in forces to help protect their ships. Although not all companies have cut off their trades that go through the Malacca straight those who have risk making Malaysia a poorer country. I believe the government should try to find some kind of job for pirates so that they are steered away from stealing and robbing others, because all the pirates want is a healthy life.

Pirates create a war zone for those who tremble in their path, especially those who are vulnerable. The only way to stop it is to fight them the way they do. These poor countries need foreign aid to boost funding in their navy to increase patrols. More patrols mean that ships can be escorted out of the danger zones safely. This is costly, but hopefully it will drive these pirates away or discourage their way life. Pirates are disorganized and wish to destroy establishments of the civilized world to gain what they want. So to succeed, we must think like the pirates to stop them once and for all.

Notice that these pirates are located at the sea area that is close to or surrounded by poor countries. These countries are not as developed or advanced comparing to other countries. For instance, we can see Indonesia as a victim. Why do maritime pirates exist in some countries but not others. There are no existence of pirates in Canada, United States of America or Europe. However, there is a tendency for pirtates to exist in countries that are normally less developed. Standard of living might be really low in these countries. Average citizens might be living below $1 Canadian per day. Remember during the vedio we were shown the location of pirates' where about on a map on a computer? We can see that those pirate icons tend to appear in areas such as the Caribeans, the shores of West Africa, or South East Asia. Notice that countries in these areas are not like Canada or USA. They are poor. What happens when people are poor, they normally do not have a job. What normally happens when people do not have a job but have to survive? You have an idea to the answer to that question. Therefore, those countries are poor and have no ability to feed their citizens properly, piracy start to breakout. In Canada, most citizens are guaranteed a job, there is no need to become pirates and start stealling. Also, those poor countries have no ability to stop piracy because the investments in their navy are very limited. Imagine people stupid enough to become a pirate close to the United States territories, the mass navy force can easily bring you down. As illustrated in the vedio: Piracy can not be stopped as long as the economy is running. Is that true? Pirates only exist in a certain parts of the world and as mentioned before, some parts of the world people do not need to be a pirate. They are better off with a secured job to survive. "If" somebody improves the poverty situations in those countries and gives everyone a suitable job, will piracy still exist with such a big scope?

While many are criticizing and trying to put a stop to piracy, I think it is more important to understand why fishermen decided to become pirates in the first place. In my opinion, one of the most important reasons for people in third world countries to pirate is get enough money to go home at the end of the day and put food on the table for their family. In a sense, these pirates are not really bad people, but they are forced to go on the road of piracy to ensure the survival of themselves and their family. From the "Chuck Norris" conversation, it can be seen that the pirates are just going for the crude oil (money that will buy food for their families), they did not actually do anything to hurt the crew on board. Once we understand the reason behind piracy, the approach to stop pirate trafficking should be trying to help these people in third world countries to find better jobs, not to blindly hunt and prosecute.

That is a very scary reality. It isn't hard to imagine it, however, when you consider everything going on in the world: widespread hunger, third world countries, people who are barely surviving.

As a mariner this issue has really hit home with me. Especially since brothers in my union were about both the Maersk Utah and Maersk Alabama. Thank you very much guys for bringing this issue to the front. And advice to the pirates....we wont be going unarmed for much longer. We have to protect ourselves. And we will.

The Malaccas, originally known as the Maluccas, have been home to Pirates for the past 500 years. Europeans introduced the notion during the Spice Wars, so once again we reap what we sow.

And this being an important trade route, what have the shipping companies done to contribute to the local islands? This is an economic issue and should be treated as such.

This was a really great piece! I enjoyed it thoroughly. I used to live in Indonesia... it's always good to see the people, but depressing to see the conditions they have to live in.

This story made me think though, if the pirates are hijaking multi-million dollar tankers, why do they still live in such poor conditions? It seems like the big dogs in the pirate world are taking advantage of these impoverished people, paying the people who do the dirty work just enough to get by while reaping the huge benefits, Who are these big dogs? Where do they live? How do they live?

That's what I wonder.

This is an excellent piece. I was nervous the whole time for the guys, even Johnny Batam looked pretty nervous there for a while. Its great to get an inside look at the pirate culture, and see that they are overall just working people trying to make a living.
