The Most Controversial Jail in the World

While the families of 9/11 victims want the Guantanamo Bay detention camps to remain open, President-elect Barack Obama and many other critics believe the military prison is a failure of the American government. After working for a year and a half to arrange media access to the camp, Adrian Baschuk reports from the controversial detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

    • In my opinion I am tired of hearing about human rights of criminals... Screw them! Screw all Criminals period! What human rights did the victims have? That in my opinion is why we have so so so much crime. If our laws were harder, and our jails were harsher less crime would happen. Criminals would say " I dont want to go to jail it sucks in their" Jail is a joke...

    • The best part was the ending when we are shown the disturbing, desperate attempt at construction of a tourism industry completely focused around the jail...a jail for the "terrorists" that caused one of the most tragic and disturbing events in American history...and we are supposed to be tourists there? Sick. It is not even like the locals saw what was going on and thought maybe they could capitalize on the ills of the American Military Industrial Complex, but our gov. teamed up with some corp. and mapped it all out before hand...Wow, what valuable jobs the gov. created for our citizens!

    • Its interesting because anyone who has seen prior footage, knows why it took Adrien a year and a half to do this interview! In a year and a half alot can be cleaned up and it doesn't take some physological warfare expert to fool anyone with half a brain who follows international affairs.

    • It is so repulsive how humanely degrading that prison is. The worst part: I can't imagine what the rest of this iceberg looks like.

    • Torture and coercive tactics is absolutely not humane, according to the Geneva Convention, all prisoners are not to be coerced with the use of human-degrading techniques. The United States wants all countries to follow it's lead to democracy, however, the lack of democracy in the prison industrial complex is one example of the hypocrisy of the corrupt American system. The closing of Guantanamo Bay will be the greatest step towards human rights.

    • Almost all the detainees are Iraqi, What did iraq do to us on 9/11? Not a damn thing. Close gitmo and move them to super max. They can get more training from the bomber there. Also, I think the other inmates might find a truth themselves.

    • I don't really think this is one of Vangard's best pieces. The beginning of the piece we get the reporter complaining about how difficult it is to go there, and while I understand the gorilla journalism technique by now everyone knows it isn't a walk in the park to get there. The tour of the reporter's temporary house is both unnecessary and gives off a sense of bribery when it is unfair to do so (anybody going to try to impress their guests). Both of these scenes should've been cut, and in its place more research should have been done at the heart of the material.

And overall, I felt like there wasn't that much information that was new. The interview of the person who spent 5 years there was the best part along with a few of the scenes inside Gitmo. (It's funny how there are several people talking about how it is unpatriotic to question Gitmo when there's actual people who were wrongly detained for years on end; many people blatantly ignored that segment.) Did I need to see the gift shop? I guess, to show what will happen to that area (or won't as I'm guessing it will be put to better use). The questions presented to the people at Gitmo were softballs, and maybe they edited out the harder-hitting questions but it still felt like a talk show interview than investigative journalism.

I think the time at which this piece was released also didn't help it. It felt dated, as at this point Gitmo was already on its way to being closed. Maybe more of an update along that thread could've made this piece a bit better: instead of the first ten minutes talking about how it's difficult to go there and how the rooms are really nice the reporter could have done a follow-up near the end interviewing or discussing the closing of Gitmo.

Still, I, as usual, commend all who do Vangard. It's a step above everything else out there.

    • okay. did anyone else notice that all their equipment that was supposedly "used" by the detainees looked like it was brand new and never used? You must know that Gitmo has been torturing for years, you really think they'll let osama play foosball after the water board or sensory deprivation? Everything that was human on that island was a front! Thank God Obama is closing it. God i never thought i'd say this, but, F BUSH!

    • If America wants to be 100% safe we would need to scientifically merge tanks and airplanes. The speed and distance of a fighter/bomber combined with the stalwart defense capabilities of a infantry support vehicle. We could conquer, and own, all of the third worlds. God plays no part in this scenario.

If America wants to be 100% safe we should just conquer every vulnerable nation. We should start snatching up all of the real estate on this planet. But what the fuck do I know? I am just an authentic American atheist.

If American wants to be safe we should force every citizen to provide a urinalysis every Monday. If your urine tests positive for illegal molecular structures you are arrested. When you are arrested you become a community service employee.

If America wants to be 100% safe we should kill every convicted felon tonight at midnight tonight.

If America wants to be 100% safe we can declare a national suicide day. A day when all those who oppose the American way sacrifice themselves on the alter of commerce. I can see the posters on the wall of the railway station. "If you don't agree with American foreign policy you should move to Mexico or kill yourself".

    • Mikeyfake1 (fake is in your name, you poser) Read this and respond with reason and logic if you are capable. So what you are saying is, torture is good/justified/right as long as we do it with slightly less ferocity than what Saddam Hussein did? What is your personal definition of torture? Do you know what is truly the best torture? Go fuck yourself Mikeyfake1. You know shit about nothing. You are a moron yet somehow you seem to know what gruesome level of torture is best for America. You are a ignorant cunt who only watches cable news. You have all of your thoughts fed to you by cable TV. Fuck you. You cunt

    • What about our troops who are away from there family and are fighting for your freedom? I could care less if we're torturing terrorists. Do you think they liked to talk about politics in Iraq. Nope they just kill people who don't agree with them. Waterboarding seems pretty humane compared to Sadaams tortures. Look em up. There gruesome.

    • I've read and considered all of your comments,
      Its all sad........all of it.!
When I see clips of that dreadful day......I was in California.....that made it alittle after 6a.m.. I turned on the news and there it was. Silent and still! I turned the water off so I could hear bettter.
What is this I'm seeing? The towers on fire? Ok!!!!!
At first no big deal because it was being reported that it was a small airplane....../.does anyone remember that?
So as I was getting used to the idea that one of the towers is on fire....bamb.......out of nowhere.........a big ball of flame apeares on T.V.
      That was the other tower.
      My whole life just changed.
I didn't know it then, but I know it now. And I believe what I believe.
Its true....we have to take these men to trial.
Everyone one of you out there has an ancester who fought and paid a huge price( by todays standards )
that gave us these rights and this Democ that we live by everyday.
      Does it always work?
It always works out for someone. You can believe that. It is a way about alot of us Americans that love the idea (eye for an eye). After seeing all the footage ...again...Towers.......people jumping to end the pain from the flames. Hmmmmmm!! Thinking ..........fantisizing.....a moment.... a pause... I say..."eye for an eye ROCKS baby"
I understand the concept of due process and I understand that these detainees have been locked up for a few holidays. But how long does it take to gather up ALL of the evidence for over two thousand murders?
      Hmmmmmmmm!!!!
      Its all sad...all of it.
Who cares about Gitmo? Who cares what you have to say about it? So until you have a personal tragedy in your life that directly rocks your world...you'll never ....Reallly understand the coooonnnnceppppppt of EYE FOR AN EYE. Which I believe is also biblical in nature, by the way.

    • I have a suggestion. The families that want Gitmo to remain open can simply house these kidnapped individuals themselves. If they need to be kept without rights indefinitely then they can do it for themselves. The 9-11 families can take them into their homes, feed and clothe them, provide free medical and dental, and full religious rights. Who ever is left over can be sent to Midland Texas to help clear brush on W's ranch.

No I have not heard of Kalid whoever and neither have you. You have never met him, you don't know him, yet you are certain he is guilty of a crime. You don't even know what he looks like. You may have seen a picture on TV next to a talking head that is feeding your paranoid delusions. You just go on believing everything that that past administration has said. You are so brainwashed it's scary!

Please keep posting pictures of 9-11 to suit your pathetic ego driven needs. After a while those images, and all the people who died will mean nothing because you used up all the shock value trying to impose your own twisted sense of morality on others. You keep putting up 9-11 pictures because they make everyone pay attention to you. We will pay attention fr a while until we get sick of flag sucking, sycophants and stop listening to you entirely.

You have sympathy for all those detained?
How about sympathy for all those Americans who went to work and never knew it was coming? How about sympathy for all the families who lost thier loved ones?
If its your opinion that those detained at Gitmo should be treated better, then I would question YOUR patriotism.

You can question people's patriotism, but first let me ask you this.. What role did any of those people play in September 11? Do you have the evidence against them? Where is the evidence? Is there any? Why so secret? It is unpatriotic to jail people without a fair trial, plain and simple.

Vengance does not equal American pride. Sorry. Not now. Not ever.

In fact, our nation's strength comes from doing the opposite; taking the (moral) high road. I am afraid, your eye-for-an-eye mentality will eventually make the whole world blind.

The U.S. is the biggest sponsor of terror on the planet. If you truly care of those who lost their lives on 9-11 you should be demanding the truth of what exactly happened...Dick Chaney and Donald Rumsfeld have torture done on those held at GITMO and other facilities not to gain information but to perpetuate terror.

    • Guantanamo is a terrible stain on America's soul. To hold a person or people captive without charges or even the spectre of a trial goes against every single principle America touts as sacred.
Of course, the dilemma is now compounded, too. If these "detainees" - not prisoners - are truly terrorists, then they have more reason than ever to despise us. If they aren't truly terrorists, then they will likely be more sympathetic to real terrorists now.
We do ourselves no favors when we ignore our own prinicples to "secure" our own freedoms and lives.
