    • until this doc i didnt know that island existed! it really opened my eyes to the unknown worlds that surrounds us and oddly enough, clothes us! as deepa said in her response, it was quite depressing. however "c'est la vie" this just shows that the dollar and fashion isn't always everlasting-the down side to that reality effects a nation of people outside of those who wears the clothes...

    • sounds like you were there about the time we were. however we found that the locals really did not want mainland americans to stay. We were very sadden by La Feista mall which is now owned by the government and how run down it is.

    • gosh. watching this episode of vangaurd was cool. I got to see most of the places i used to go to while living in saipan. TINIAN! ahh, used to vacation there allll the time. My nanny used to be a textile worker there on the island, but my mom and dad gave her a job that payed wayyy better than the factories did. i miss there. i knew saipans economy was going down when they closed the Wendy's there! that was the first sign. *tear*

    • The comments are very insightful, there are many reasons for the downfall not just one main reason. WTO is indeed one of those factors however the way politics is played thoughout the US including our current economic conditions here on the mainland is very scary.

Rules were changed in the banking and on wall street which allowed for the defaults and higher gas prices. These rules got changed because of greed on the part of our elected officials. Powerful rich corporations seemed to have had an in. Now maybe the little person will be helped.

    • I lived in Saipan for over five years. My daughter was born there. Your story is pretty acurate and that is good. A lot of the problems in Saipan were from the WTO. However the prostutes were known by the government and little was done as well as planning for the future. It is sad to see the down fall of many of the buildings however the La Festa Mall is owned and operated by the government who has for years negleted maintance issues so that they can pay salaries.
