Correspondent Mariana van Zeller travels to Uganda, where many question whether the growing influence of American religious groups has led to a movement to make homosexuality a crime punishable by death. As an anti-gay movement spreads across the continent, gay Africans and their families face an increasingly uncertain future of isolation, imprisonment or even execution.

"Vanguard," airing weekly on Current TV Wednesdays at 10/9c, is a no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.

he was probably removed because he constantly breaks guideline rules like multiple profiles and directly threatening people and unnecessary profanity.

btw, i only flag threats; other than that, it's free speech fun!

    • poor poor hetro-phobes. cant blame this one on God, straights or christians I'm afraid.

How bout this? What if a certain group of people were practicing ...oh...say...some type of game where everyone who played would later be killed. more over...everyone THEY knew who DIDN'T play were also killed. and their children as well...? what then?

well sweetie thats aids. In africa alone 25 PERCENT of the adult population has aids...I have no stats on children but it is a significant number....

Aids is a killer...millions ...did ya get that? MILLIONS. a slow agonizing death.
aids began with queers. in the beginning it was called queer cancer or...gay cancer. THAT is a fact ..evangelicals didn't make that happen. the Act of men having sex with men made that happen. you cant whine loud enough, you cant make enough protests signs or march enough to change that reality. It is what it is.
Now the people of uganda see a horrendous disease murdering EVERYBODY. And they are trying to do something about that. I'm afraid they are far too late, like closing the barn door after the gay cows are out...but...at least THEY are not in denial as you are. The rest of the world KNOWS how this started. and it spreads all because of you're personal preferance for perversion. If you people would just abstain...find another outlet for your "passion" or even NO outlet...because you see...why should ANYONE have to die because of YOUR sexual preference.

now before you label me homophobe...nope. I HAVE no fear of queer. YOU are afraid of me. YOU are the phobe- the hetro phobe. As an evangelical christain street preacher...I have had the hellish task of holding a queer while he passed from this world BECAUSE of his self inflicted disease. funny none of YOU people were around for that. I had to listen to him cry. He did not want to die. His name was chuck. he worked for the city of wichita until he was put on leave due to aids. so sad. I began helping him before chuck got too sick to work...even tho he KNEW he was dying... HE KNEW THAT HE KNEW that he was highly contagious...yet...he hit one me. He wanted to have sex with me...thats how strong this perversion is.

Yes I say queer. I say whatever it takes to put stumbling blocks in the path of suicidal society bent on self gratification to the point of self destruction. Stop making evangelicals/God/ politicians the blame. take responsibility for your OWN actions. Aids is a direct result of you doing something you clearly do not HAVE to do. so...don't. Your blaming others will NOT change reality.

this ariticle and those responsible for it...just took out another 5000 people by supporting this disease and the cause of it. It is NOT normal it is NOT okay and to say so...as they are in uganda is NOT a crime. Whether it be an angry GOD or evil white politicians or ...the freakin mother ship circling the earth...this crap is a MURDERER. stop cheering for it.

when those purple dots spread across your chest like freckles of death...maybe then you will cease to fight against the truth.

Yeah, you think you are so smart. The A.I.D.S. epidemic around the world can be traced to origination of the heterosexual community IN AFRICA. Why don't you tell your straight "brothers" and "sisters" to stop bangin' their chicks up the butt and stop raping their women and children? That would be a good start. And a better level of nutrition might help.

Unless I'm mistaken, the last time I heard statistics on HIV/AIDS here in the United States, heterosexual women were the majority hit with this virus. Either way, this affects ALL people - it is not a "gay disease."

    • Maria_Puentes:

      Thanks for your clarification, Maria.

Here's the beginning of what I'd posted: "Unless I'm mistaken, the last time I heard statistics on HIV/AIDS here in the United States..." So I didn't actually "FALSELY post," because I clearly stated that the last I'D heard was such-and-such.

So I just went to the CDC's website, and will back you up on your correction, by copying and pasting the following:

      http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/aa/index.htm

"Of all racial and ethnic groups in the United States, HIV and AIDS have hit African Americans the hardest. The reasons are not directly related to race or ethnicity, but rather to some of the barriers faced by many African Americans. These barriers can include poverty (being poor), sexually transmitted diseases, and stigma (negative attitudes, beliefs, and actions directed at people living with HIV/AIDS or directed at people who do things that might put them at risk for HIV).

"When we look at HIV/AIDS by race and ethnicity, we see that African Americans have:

      * More illness. Even though blacks (including African Americans) account for about 13% of the US population, they account for about half (49%) of the people who get HIV and AIDS.
      * Shorter survival times. Blacks with AIDS often don’t live as long as people of other races and ethnic groups with AIDS. This is due to the barriers mentioned above.
      * More deaths. For African Americans and other blacks, HIV/AIDS is a leading cause of death."

      There's more on the site.

The only discrepancy with your alert is that I didn't read "Gay Black males," as you said. I read only "African Americans." Nothing was stated about heterosexual or homosexual. Just African Americans, in general. Doubly glad I looked it up, so I could post something 100% factual.

You are an absolutely ridiculous fool. I hope you really start reading some books, because you have NO idea what you are talking about. That's why you're a street preacher; you're a lunatic who needs to fact check. I'm a queer studies major, and you don't know much about anything except being a nut.

You know what will stop AIDS from spreading? Condoms. You also forget to mention a few things about your friend who "hit one me." AIDS doesn't kill you. I'm not going to give you the information your comment is missing there. You need to come to the conclusion yourself. Getting mad at homosexuals for AIDS is one of the stupidest antics I've heard in a while. It doesn't care if you are hetero or homo. It doesn't care if you prefer women or men. Its indiscriminate. Just like Death. It can happen to ALL of us.
You also don't mention IV drug users. AIDS isn't just spread through gay sex. It can be spread through sharing needles with an infected junkie. It can be spread by having a blood transfusion with infected blood. And guess what Mr. Street Preacher? You can get it from having sex with your WIFE. It does not CARE if you are gay or straight. It will infect you regardless of your sexual preference. If you are HUMAN it's OPEN SEASON for the virus. I've even read articles that claim that circumcision can prevent it from being spread.
Stop thinking that just because you are straight you won't get AIDS. That's foolish and borderline retarded.. but most of all it's a misconception of how a disease is spread and how it survives. Try reading a book other than the bible for once, k?

If AIDS is your argument, Tell Trojan or LifeStyles to send a few crates of condoms over. That will help with the spread of aids.

Thinking that only gay people get it shows how oblivious you are to reality.

Don't even get me started about the situation you described as your friend died "of aids"...
Something's not right with this picture, especially after reading how anti-gay you claim to be =)

Oh, and after seeing this episode a few times, I can say.. That preacher is definitely obsessed with "poo poo" He KEEPS TALKING ABOUT IT. He has a fecal fixation. Is he really THAT interested in it? I wonder where he got the notion that ALL GAY PEOPLE are fecalpheliacs? Education I think it the issue. he cant imagine that there are only a small few who actually do this (I'm guessing, I don't have figures to support my notion)... I'm pretty sure that the majority of gay folk aren't into this... Most of the ones I know are quite clean.

There I go again wasting my typing on someone who's not going to listen....

so if AIDS spread because of gay perversion, than did gonnorhea, chlamydia, herpes, and syphilis spread because of heterosexual perversion? AIDS isn't limited to homosexuals and unfortunately your arguments make no sense and you end up making yourself look like an uneducated idiot.

    • Religion is not evil.
The Bible, Koran, Torah and other books of scripture are not evil.
People who say they speak for "God" and claim to be anointed by the most high, are the ones who are evil.

I believe all these religious leaders who run around spewing their hate filled rhetoric, should be tried for crimes against humanity at the Hague.
They should not be allowed to use religion as a defense.
They should not be allowed to say they are just spreading the word of the lord and because their interpretation says all gays should be chastised or murdered - makes it right.

They should be held accountable for the actions their words have put into motion.
If someone wants to say, well it is just free speech.
I would reply, well Hitler was just practicing his right to free speech - and look at the result.
Words carry weight, and some words can weigh a tonne.

Ignorance poverty war and strife are what bring this about . Al these things increase the power of religion . Religious dogma , as opposed to spiritual connection with the world , is simply a tool of power over the masses .

    • This is really upsetting, and we've all seen something similar to this before. Sexuality, like skin color can not be chosen nor changed. Its something you are born with, something you are. Hating someone for who they are, taking away their civil rights and punishing them by death? Is utterly wrong, no one should have that power.

Christian belief is that God is our father, and I am your brethren.

1John 3:15 "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him."

They are so misleaded, ignorance and hatred has blinded them. They arent civil human beings, they are animals.

Not that I'm condoning this view, but religious koo-koo clocks like the guy you see in this video conducting this hate seminar equate homosexuals to murderers, child molesters, etc..That's their psychotic view and they don't give a damn about anyone else's perspective, since obviously to them, people with different perspectives are beneath them

    • Outrageous but not surprising. It's typical of Christianity put their own interests before anything else. It's also disgusting that the Ugandan government is in support of this ludicrous bill.

I think this is a more pressing issue: "Fifty-one percent of the population of the country lives slightly below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day".[5]

Or maybe this: "Public spending on education was at 5.2 % of the 2002–2005 GDP".[31]

Not to mention the massacres because of the Congo War.

      Assholes.

And yes I didn't realize what you wrote was in reference to what that numb skull said in the video. He said the USA is not a Christian country as if it ever was meant to be. It is true that America was never meant to be a Christian Country. I think we've had enough of being exlpoited, controlled and manipulated.

Hahaha! That's part of the US foundation myth, and you've got it wrong anyway. Those that did go across in their little boats to "escape religious persecution" were religious extremists. They went off to found their own happy little communities where they could be extremest Christians without persecution from any sane state authority interfering with them. ...So if you choose to look at the foundation of the USA from the point of the nut son the boats, then yes, it was meant to be Christian.

But then there were all the economic and state ventures by Britain, France, and Spain. They were Christian too because it's just what their culture was like.

All that is totally unimportant to this awful situation in Uganda, but it's not a good idea to get history so wrong.
