lauraling

watch more vanguard

Journalist Laura Ling provides harrowing details of how she and producer Euna Lee were apprehended and held in North Korea while on assignment covering human trafficking in Asia. Personal accounts, letters and never-before-seen footage from Ling, Lee and producer Mitch Koss reveal the team's experiences at the center of a widely publicized international standoff.

"Vanguard," airing weekly on Current TV Wednesdays at 10/9c, is a no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.

    • What is important is that neither of these two knuckleheads make a dime off of the clown show and intelligence gift they handed the North Koreans. If you read the details about there dumb and dumber misadventures you can read that the North Koreans rounded the girls up along with the videos they had already taken of North Korean dissidents. They should be punished.

    • Yes, there is more emotion than information here but you need to keep a couple of things in mind. First, she was a prisoner. She was stuck in one room for most of her stay there. What did you expect her to "report" on aside from what she did. Second, if you've ever been through something traumatic, you'd realize it's difficult to speak in anything BUT emotional terms. She said her book was written to heal and I feel like in many ways this interview had the same meaning for her. There is a lot of information here - yes, information we already know, but this is NK, people, the most isolated place in the world. Not sure how you expected someone who was stuck in one room to suddenly shed light on the entire country.

    • I just finished there book today and what a experience they had. I hope something life changing came out of this for the people that where there captures, and at least there are a few people who know that all americans are not out to bring down there goverment but really want people in NK to be free to express them selfs in a free way. Laura and Euna your are beautiful lady's and human beings, I am so happy for your family's and friends you are free to love, live and be happy together again. May the Light of God be with you always.

    • This is Asian female fetishism by white males. This is the old story of the Asian exotic erotic female, held captive by evil captors (Asians), saved by white men (the heroes).

Trouble is Asian fetishism sells -- on media from Current to Bloomberg to various real TV networks.

Or maybe, just maybe, Laura is a DAMN good journalist, an important member of the Current family, and she is an American. Euna and Laura's travel to China was based upon the truth; they went to shine the light onto the plight of North Korean dissidents.

Your barely veiled racism is absolutely sickening. Not all of us have a strong tie to our ethnic roots. Being Asian does not make her any less American.

    • It must be so nice that their boss, Al Gore, with all that power and influence could help his employees to get out of that North Korean jail. Oh ya that's right, he didn't...he let them rot there without saying a word.

I don't know what their relationship is like now, but did Gore have anything to do with Clinton being involved?

I love Laura's description of her reaction:

"...The former leader of the Free World! The 42nd President of the United States! ..."

    • I watched it twice and I'm not still not sure if she is trying to say that the guide somehow is responsible for their crossing the river (?)

She's proved she's a brave woman in the past, so this feeble explanation is puzzling. If it was "stunt journalism", and they willingly entered NK merely to show their bravado, then I would have hoped that she would at least admit it.

Also, what happened to that guide? Did he escape? If the NK soldiers captured him, I presume that he wasn't held in a hotel.

I've read in NY TIMES a while back that the Chinese authorities raided several hiding spots where the two met up with North Korean refugees and some sort of missionary group helping them. And one of the pastors said that the authorities presented proof they obtained from the guide. So, I'm guessing (really just guessing) that either the guide got caught by the NK soldiers or got detained by their Chinese counterpart.

    • Thank you Vanguard for the interview. The informative content of your reporting has always made me proud of the Current project.

Like many of those here, I was a regular contributer to Current when this ordeal took place. I had had correspondence with Ling prior to her arrest. She is a beautiful women both inside and out, and I am glad to see she has put her life back together after her ordeal.

I'm going to lay my curiosity about the events to rest and look forward to the upcoming season.

Thank you Vanguard. Keep up the fantastic work.

    • They really are inspirational, and I don't think people truly understand just how much journalists risk by going to these dangerous locations.
This interview reminded me of the hundreds of journalists/radiohosts/ columinsts ect, that have been taken to jail or killed in Eritrea within the past 10 years. Its sad, really, the country used to be a source of global fascination.
The country is called the North Korea of Africa and has been rated for 5 years the msot deadly place for journalists. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsSDMRpa1C8- the 14:00 minute mark) hmm maybe Vanguard should do a report on the country.
Now I'm rambling, but like I said these journalist are a source of courage and I have feeling that once they recover from their ordeal, they will shed light on the horrors that occur in North Korea.

    • Don't get me wrong, it was a harrowing experience and I am glad they are back, but the EPISODE was a bit of a disappointment. I just don't feel like I heard anything that I didn't already know, and it seemed pretty clear they were leaving a lot of the detail out.

    • Too short. Would be a good two or three parter. Would like to see more of the surviving video. Story will not be complete until we here from the remaining two players in the drama.

      BOOK SPOILER!

Laura says she told Mitch to keep filming as they were being attacked by the soldiers. He pointed the camera at her. I would love to know if that film survived. Did it get taken by the Chinese? Djoes Current have it? Since the show above used video footage from the trip, obviously some video made it back.

    • What a harrowing experience to relive. While I say you shouldn't have followed, I understand that your journalistic spirit to bring out the truth was guiding you hoping it would be OK. I can't say I wouldn't have done the same, especially considering the story you were working on. The one thing I do hope this brings forth is the humanitarian crisis you sought to bring to the world through your original report. You are a true journalist, and I thank you for your bravery and for telling your story. Also, congratulations on being pregnant. The new life you will bring into the world will be a light to balance the darkness you sought to expose.

    • I was amazed at how quickly the trolls attacked Laura and Euna for trying to bring us information. It was like instead of focusing on the human rights disaster over there, many people seem to have the "they deserved it" attitude. In any case, I'm glad you are all alright.

    • Maybe it was me, but the interview was extremely vague. I would have liked to hear more about the North Korean trial and investigation on Euna and Lisa's trespassing along with any insight regarding the condition of N.K.'s public people.

I happened to flip past Oprah two days ago and Lisa was giving the same interview, but it much greater detail. I was thinking she would give more specifics during a Vanguard interview, but the opposite was true.

Still very glad the situation was resolved and everyone is safe. :)

    • didnt it seem more like a transfer of street cred from laura to vanguard than an actual interview tho?
i mean kudos to them, i wouldnt tell the entire story either if that would hurt screen adaptations, or a book deal.

      really?
i think cnn is regarded as news more than vanguard.
i dont agree with that cnn is news but vanguard has a long way to go to come close.
it just felt thar interview was a lil too similar to a professional wrestler passing the torch to the next guy and building him up, rather than an expose

cnn certainly has its biases, they hate jews and push thier corperate agenda. but vanguard is only human interest pieces that appeal to the bleeding hearts. they are bar none the best at showing the state of affairs for different people around the world. but the lack objectivity as every person is a victim. they never delve into the larger story that actualy causes the suffering.

multiple perspectives are severely lacking in thier pieces. random current pods from lesser sources do this more than the vanguard team. id like to know what the tamil tigers have to say not just the civilian victims.i get that pirates are pushed into this life as fishing was taken from them, but how and by whom, and so on.

      actualy that was my point.
as human interest pieces go vanguard has done an amazing job of telling you what it is like from a personal level in various places around the world, but as documentarians, and journalist they leave much to be desired, as the big picture isnt explained, or investigated, just used as a backdrop to the personal story they are telling.

      http://say.la

of course they attempt to make popstars out of the vanguard team, but thats just smart business. if they dont get heat who will care as to what they have to say.laura has cred from cnn but it was time to spread that cred through association to mariana and adam.

but also in the name of fairness remember journalism is all but dead in our society, so vanguard is its closest approximation for this generation.i wish news was predicated on journalistic principles but its based on the sexiness of politics instead.better that vanguard be the lifetime or oxygen version of news than not at all.

personally i like any of the ones who do pods on middle east stuff cuz thier is just so much its impossible for any one person to do it justice, and despite them airing pods i find offensive as a jew, i notice they are aware of this and they tend to show the other side right after.
i also really liked the black girl who went to the redneck thing (suck it klan)
and the guy who did the pod showing how a super conservative element, lives side by side with a liberal element in i think it was colorado.neo gun toting christians and topless bikers eating bull balls

i just wish vanguard wasnt presented like "extreme news"
poor al gore-the nineties were great but let it go-

    • Very disappointed with this story. She didn't reveal anything new. I was very interested in knowing how Clinton negotiated release but she said nothing about it. Probably because, we paid heavy price.

Don't get why she is blaming fixer? He signaled them to follow him into N. Korea side. Despite knowing they are entering a hostile country and what happens to intruders, they entered N. Korea. Still don't get why? Probably cheap publicity stunt??

It always annoys me when people criticize the actions of Laura and Euna when they have no understanding of the exemplary work they do as journalists.
