Becoming a Reporter: Vanguard's Mariana van Zeller

Correspondent Mariana van Zeller was first inspired to pursue a career in journalism while watching TV news in her native Portugal. In this exclusive Vanguard extra, she talks about making her way from Europe to New York City's Columbia University, working side-by-side with her husband, producer Darren Foster, and why people continue to underestimate her.

"Vanguard," airing weekly on Current TV Wednesdays at 10/9c, is a no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.

    • Out of curiousity, I watched your episode of a UCLA student here illegally and wanting to earn a college education. I was disappointed you didn't ask why they haven't persued legalization "documentation". As an educated person, they should want to follow the lae of the land. I think it's great they want an education, but to be fair and justified, I feel, as part of their education and graduation credits, they should have to take a course on American Citizenship, pass and not only graduate, but as an American!

    • How about a follow up on how difficult it is for people who NEED pain medicine and the stuff we go through to get it. I take Oxycontin everyday due to pain from a broken neck. Without it I would not have much of a life. My pain medication bill runs over $1,000 a month - thank God for my legal settlement! You are only showing the dark side of a drug that has its place in the market. The people who abuse it would be taking something else if the oxycontin were taken away.

    • Journalism is such a fascinating profession. It is one of the pursuits I would have followed if I could live more than one life.

Are there any plans about reporting on Zimbabwe? It is that I believe is lacking the coverage it deserves.

    • Vanguard's correspondents are a step-up in television/cable journalism and I for one thoroughly enjoy its fast moving to-the-point presentation and analysis. Current TV definitely has a winning informative journalistic combination here!

    • She is amazing and her passion is what captivates her audience. Her willingness to get the whole story creates the authenticity necessary for an award winning documentary. May God continue to bless the work of her hand.

    • Mariana... you are cute and smart... one more thing i like about you is that you look for ways to make your ideas work and not for reasons they won't.
      Your enthusiasm is contagious!

    • Small bits like this from the Vanguard team have been what inspired me to make the transitional jump from primarily still photography and story telling, to wanting to do more with video as well. Mariana, you're an inspiration for young up and coming journalist. Thank you for the work that you, and the rest of the Vanguard team does.

    • I agree with the fact that being a female journalist you sometimes are more likely to get statements from people just because they underestimate you. Funny world...

    • Thank you for this piece. I just finished my first year of community college--getting as many generals out of the way as I can, then I am going into the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Your persistence and dedication to the school you wanted in at inspires me, Mariana.

In fact, the entire Vanguard team has credit for inspiring and pinpointing my true passion. Keep up the amazing the work; and, maybe someday and with some luck, I'll be interning down there. :-)
