MarianaVanZeller

watch more vanguard

An exclusive, extended interview with David Bahati, the Ugandan member of parliament who introduced the anti-gay bill calling for use of the death penalty. Correspondent Mariana van Zeller asks Bahati about his reaction to President Obama's and Rev. Rick Warren's condemnation of the bill, how he would respond if had a gay family member, and his belief that Uganda may have been chosen by God to fight this "spiritual battle."

"Vanguard," airing weekly on Current TV Wednesdays at 10/9c, is a no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.

    • OMG, he gets to the root of what every 'true believer' desires, to control others and punish or eliminate those they can't control.
He also shouldn't be offended for the suggestion that Ugandans didn't come up with this "kill all the fags law", this one comes right from the caring conservative Christians of the U.S. or as I like to call them the neo-Christians, so vocal, so common, so offensive, and on the offensive throughout the U.S. and the world. The neo-Christians conveniently ignore the fact that Jesus preached love and understanding, not hate and intolerance. Oh, and he there wouldn't have been any confusing him for a conservative.
M234 got it right 8 months earlier, no straight guy is going to have this much hate or trouble with others being gay. Evolve already......

    • What an ignoramus jack--s. These types are the worst because they commit all kinds of atrocities in the name of God. After listening to this crazy man what logical person can argue against the fight to keep State and Religion separated.

    • A black Hitler. Repulsive. Does he really believe that God will accept his hate and his murderous ideals? Jesus died to save us. This black Hitler was born to hate us.

    • I wonder why a gay activist from the US wouldn't fly half way around the world to a nation where people are imprisoned merely for being homosexuals.

    • David Bahati has a very litle or no knowledge of political development in Africa. While the African leaders used the religion to propagate the liberation of the continent fron the colonialist, it is the same religion that the colonialist used to enslave the continent. he would learn that there is a big difference beteween spirituality and morality.

What David and his chronies are doing, persection people based on sexual orienatation, is not only very immoral regardless of how spiritual they try to make it look, it is barbaric and un Godly.

    • This man has yet to produce any evidence of any kind, my god how many times did Ms. Maddow ask him last night for any evidence of any kind. I cannot believe this bill is going to vote.

    • No really straight person is going to have such an obsession with gay sex as David Bahati. My guess is that he is a closet homosexual himself and just can't face it. And like others before him (Ted Haggard etc.), Bahati has managed to translate his hatred into wealth and power.

I think this manis like Terri Jones, using this subject to try and achieve his five minutes in the sun. Ignorantly evil. Not that the extreme evangelists who visited Uganda didn't stoke the fire. Now they are evil for creating such a dangerous situation for gay people.

    • David Bahati is gay and is fucking the pastor and they probably had a gay sexual experience with other gay men. Why would this pastor look for gay porn on the net if he is not interested?

    • Mariana, listening to this interview (and I've seen your entire piece as well), I find myself really wishing you had asked Bahati a question such as, "As a Christian, do you love the people who are gay? Do you think it is alright to hurt the individuals for what you call a sin?" or some other question that would directly challenge his stance. I have no experience in journalism, so perhaps this type of question would go against what you understand to be your role in reporting this story. If so, I'm very curious how you see your role as a journalist.

i agree. i also wished she hadn't asked mr. bahati about what he would do if he had a gay relative. the answer to that question was obvious, whether or not it was true, and did only serve the purpose of making him look good.

maybe because they are pussies? anyone who wants to change this wont be able to do it from another country. the people of uganda need to see that no one is out to recruit their children into being homosexual, that homosexuals do not eat each others feces, and that homosexuality is not a choice. don't most homosexuals struggle with accepting their sexuality? this shit is not okay, the evangelists who came to uganda should all be hanged themselves.
