The leader of Uganda's anti-gay movement is Pastor Martin Ssempa, a skilled and savvy showman who uses press conferences with international media and church services to present his sermons on the evils of homosexuality. He shows hard-core gay pornography and has a young woman testify to being seduced into being a lesbian by activists.

In "Missionaries of Hate," correspondent Mariana van Zeller travels to Uganda, where many question whether the growing influence of American religious groups has led to a movement to make homosexuality a crime punishable by death.

      really? Seriously? Do you have any idea of the rates of homosexuality in every strata of the animal kingdom? We as humans are also still animals - we like to elevate our status because of mental development and our position on the food chain, but in the end all of our internal functions are the same as all the other animals on this planet.
      Homosexuality is not a disorder, it is not a result of neglect. It is not something to be lamented. You, my good sir, are more lamented in my heart because of your misguided attempt to demonize a section of the population for something that you yourself feel all the time - love.

    • sometimes i wonder if this pastor is even straight because apparently, hes very knowledgeable about all these pornographic things. i betcha his sexual libido goes up when he sees these things, but yells n preach to get rid of it. shoot.

    • It is obvious to me that this man has some sort of 'skat' obsession. To emphasize "eating poo-poo" in the manner in which he did is borderline and closet fetishism. Furthermore, to point the finger at the United States as a whole provides sufficient evidence of this man's ignorance. United States obscenity laws frown upon both 'fisting and skat.' The way in which he conducted himself with children present further demonstrates his use of scare tactics to brainwash a somewhat vulnerable people. His demeanor was belligerent and oppressive.

    • "Eating poo poo" wow personally I have never participted in fisting or leaking and pretty sure my friends aren't engaging in this either. This man is very ignorant on so many levels and issues. I hope the men/woman gay/lesbian find safety and support, I see this and feel even more appreciative of what rights I have as a black gay male here in the USA. Thanks for this coverage Mariana, you have done an amazing job covering this.

    • This is something different a pastor speaking about a matter like this and which I hate to say it but he is right, the people of power has influenced this to the world and this is called population control. This will do away with most of the world and have a society that don't reproduce. I have nothing against gay people because all money is green but I just don't think they should push there gayness on other people who are straight this is not good for the rest of the world.

    • Mariana, this is beautifully done, and totally tragic. I spent three summers doing humanitarian work in Uganda, and the experience was amazing, though the religious overtones of the country were disturbing. Your reporting does a great job of painting the picture. You are courageous. Keep it up.
