In this scene from Vanguard's "American Jihadi," correspondent Christof Putzel examines the increasingly radical attitude of Omar Hammami, an Alabama man who is now recruiting other young Muslims from the West to wage jihad overseas. As Omar's childhood best friend, Bernie Culveyhouse, explains, Omar moved from prioritizing knowledge to action. Shortly after, Omar left his wife in Egypt--only to reappear in Somalia as part of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.

    • Once you're in the tribe, the search for knowledge wraps itself around the doctrine they follow. It is not objective at all but rather, intelligence without any independent direction, and totally in submission to the collective.

      In this case that collective is inexorably bound to follow the life of Muhammad and the words in the Koran. Without studying the contents of that book, people are merely having an uninformed opinion likely to be very conciliatory and politically correct.

      Once you have, a lot of the things that are going on make a lot more sense. Its not happy news, but at least it becomes more clear. At least to me.

      I think many purposely raise obedient children . It is easier , I admit , but the results can be this very tragic story . A young energetic person who has no confidence in their self directing impulse , one who has a powerful for need imposed external structure , because they did not develop a strong internal structure when they were children . They were taught to follow orders , and they do it well , and without question . Internal structure includes the touchstone of compassion in an active conscience . If the "orders" are from a divine source , one can skip conscience all together . I do not recommend this .
