Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller travels to Sri Lanka during the final days of the country's civil war to see how one of the world's most powerful insurgencies, the Tamil Tigers, was finally defeated.

In this clip, Mariana digs deeper into the Tigers' use of suicide bombers and their designation as a terrorist group by the United States.

"Vanguard," airing weekly on Current TV Wednesdays at 10/9c, is a no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.

    • Suicide bombings in Sri Lanka. First of all, way to add more excrement to the already towering excrement pile that is life in Sri Lanka. Suicide bombings!? Whatever happened to just blowing somebody else up and going home in time for the Antique Road Show? These guys blow themselves up AND other people. I don't think your doing it right. See, if you lived in America, you would've learned how to kill other people without dying. We have plenty of footage of Wile E. Coyote demonstrating this. A governor in california made movies killing hundreds of people and never died in any of them. Do you understand? Don't kill yourself to fuck virgins. Kill other people and fuck virgins anyway. I'm here to help.

    • This is sad because what the Tamil Tigers did was terrorism and was wrong. It underscores however, the conditions of the Tamil people as a whole and also the repression of their language and customs by the Sri Lankan government that played a part in its actual birth. Thanks for covering this. It is another tragedy we do not see on the "mainstream media." Perhaps one day we will understand such tactics and work to solve their root causes to really work for peace in the world.
