In this scene from Vanguard's "Narco War Next Door," correspondent Laura Ling investigates a wave of kidnapping in Mexican border towns like Juarez, where drug cartels have even held Americans for ransom.

"Vanguard," airing weekly on Current TV Mondays at 9/8c, is a no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.

    • I have to agree with Steev, check the numbers. Who is this Kieth so and so? Is he FBI, ICE, Border Patrol? I didn't catch his credentials in the piece, who is he and what is his position in government? I also agree with tommic, decriminalizing drugs would marginalize Drug King Pins. The cartels might change their tactics, and might even get more violent as they loose power though I think the long term effect would be toward less violence.

    • I just want to say that I agree with tommic on most points, however treating addicts only works IF the additc truly wants treatment! treatment can not be forced. It is better for all to give them unlimited access to there drug of choice, buy them a death insurance policy and move on. This is cold but the most effective path, in my humble view.

    • decriminialize drugs, legalize Pot, take the cash incentive away, treat drug addicts, don't jail them and that would be a start to end the violence and terror that tens of thousands of people live in everyday.

    • I think this is pretty frightening to think that ex drug cartel thugs turn to kidnapping as a profit stream while their drug business is destroyed or been put out of business by rival cartels.

That they would cross the border and kidnap American citizens and hold them for ransom in Mexico is just out of control completely. Frankly I am glad that this report is going out because it adds a whole other dimension to the increased border control debate rages on.
