Current TV's signature series, "Vanguard," one of television's most celebrated news programs, will return for a highly anticipated fifth season of thought-provoking investigations beginning Monday, June 20th at 9/8c.

Seven insightful new installments of "Vanguard" will explore a variety of global issues with broad social significance: the role of prescription pain killers in fueling a surge in heroin addiction, Big Tobacco's efforts to target a young new generation in the Third World, the decimation and impending disappearance of the Bluefin tuna and Brazil's efforts to clean up their "favelas" (slums), among others.

Launched in 2008, "Vanguard" has become one of the only multi-award winning long-form investigative documentary series on cable television. Its programming has showcased and provided in-depth perspectives on notable issues such as immigration, the drug trade and the environment. Committed to traveling to locations around the world, its correspondents include Adam Yamaguchi, Christof Putzel, and Mariana van Zeller. Nominated for five Emmys, the series has become one of the most celebrated news programs in the United States, receiving prestigious awards for journalism including the Livingston Award, the Prism Award, the DuPont Award and the 2010 Peabody Award and the 2010 Television Academy Honor.

    • "Refined opiates are a man made plague" METH is perhaps a worse disaster and example of one of mankind's latter day plagues. Coca in the leaf was no problem for centuries until some brilliant Foreign chemist "Refined it" into a new sweeping plague. Colombia's peaceful pot scene has come to be displaced with scenes of peasants with their pantlegs rolled up, stomping around in chemical baths, then dumping the waste into the ecosphere! "Project Colombia" sent swarms of DEA helicopters to help everything out. Opium is not an acceptable softer form. Need to re-explore Coca Cola's patent formula and create a legal market which is taxable and regulates.

    • Let's hope you can maintain the independence that has made you the best part of Current TV.

If I were young and just out of college, this is what I would want to do.
Oh, and please, more environmental stories ( would also love to help you with info.) Argentina/Paraguay would be good places to start investigating the effects of industrial/GM/monoculture agriculture on indigenous peoples and biodiversity. This is a huge global/environmental/social/ecological issue. Thanks!

Why do you have to be young? I think getting an older person's perspective on things would really balance out the channel, not to mention that life doesn't end at 40 or 50.

I think that demographic isn't being represented as much as it should. Many people who are in their 40s-60s have had to start over because of the economy and just because they want a change in careers and that needs to be displayed more.

And besides the 50-80-year olds aren't the same as the ones from generations ago. :)
