In "Sex, Lies & Cigarettes," Vanguard correspondent Christof Putzel heads to Indonesia, where he exposes Big Tobacco's successful and deadly expansion into that country, and observes the stage being set for a David vs. Goliath battle, as a small, underfunded group of concerned advocates battle Big Tobacco and a government drunk on profits and denial.
"Sex, Lies & Cigarettes" premieres on Tuesday, June 28 at 9/8c on Current TV.

So sad that Phillip Morris is moving on to advertising to children and remote villages in up and coming countries to market their addictive, cancer causing products. The US and Europe wizened up so they have found new victims who have yet to learn the dangers of smoking.

Outstanding job on this intense, mind boggling research project you have going on! I still wonder if this issue will only worsen or perhaps come to an end before so many children have to die of the estimated 1 billion death toll...
Some Q's that popped up in my head while viewing the Vanguard Trailer:
In what ways can we possibly reduce the amount of smokers in Indonesia?
Does no one have power over the Tobacco Company, displaying these harmful, influential advertisements upon Indonesia?

yea very well done i saw this last night too. great reporting thumbs up way up! smoking will kill 1billion people !@#!@#!@# crazy stuff and thanks for reporting on this major issue others refuse to because they own the large food and product companies that pay tv to stay on air. the largest smoking company in the world only makes 25% of its money from cigs most money comes from there drinks and food products. major news will not cover this so we turn to the new major news network Current. we need some new award shows for these real reporting!

Disturbing to see how many international bands are used to help market cigarettes to young people in Indonesia. Latest include Neon Trees, Good Charlotte, 30 Seconds to Mars and The Cranberries http://motherjones.com/mixed-media/2011/06/neon-trees-mormon-band-tobacco-java-r...

Watching not even a minute of the marketing clip seeing the giant "extreme" skateboarder cigarette ad you can see they(big tobacco) have no defense. The only response they can give is they care dearly, about no one except their shareholders.$$$.

OK, I see the usual threadbare arguments from people who are either hacks for the tobacco lobby or simply free-market reactionaries. Allow me to address them:
Argument #1: What about fat people and cheeseburgers? They're bad, too.
Answer: There is no secondhand cheeseburger breath that will make me fat. In addition, a cheeseburger, regardless of its caloric count, provides nutrition. A cigarette, meanwhile, does not. I would be overjoyed if the poor kids in the Third World were eating cheeseburgers and getting fat as opposed to smoking. Heavy lifelong smokers are more of a burden on public health than fat people.
#2: What about alcohol? Studies show that a large percentage of drinkers are casual drinkers, who drink simply for the taste and don't drink daily. Ninety percent of cigarette smokers, meanwhile, are addicted and must smoke daily. Again, in addition, there is no second-hand wine buzz.
#3: The free market should be able to do what it wants. Really? You would support selling cigarettes to children and targeting them? If you make this argument you're just plain evil.
#4: It's the parents' responsibility. True. But the beauty for cigarette companies when it comes to advertising and giving out samples in Third World shantytowns is the parents are nowhere to be found. They can use poverty and social dysfunction to their advantage. Again, what about the children?

I find it interesting how people are always so quick to blame their addictions on anything other than themselves. What if a person smokes one cigarette every 15 years? Is it still dangerous? These types of smokers exist. No one wants to acknowledge the dangers of cell phones, or sucralose, aspartame, etc...I see idiots sticking cell phones right up against their head. Would you stick your head in a microwave oven and turn it on?? But oh man, those cigarettes.
Now I do agree, that the dumb parents allowing that kid to smoke are poor excuses for parents. We do have to exercise common sense throughout our lives. Some things, you should just know. If you don't know, get educated, and until you know, don't pro-create. Common sense seems to be facing extinction

Truman: " leave them alone, I am an adult and I know the dangers of smoking as I'm sure the people in the video do also."
THESE PEOPLE ARE CHILDREN, NOT ADULTS. THERE IS NO OBLIGATION BY BIG TOBACCO TO WARN OF HEALTH RISKS IN THESE COUNTRIES.
Longhao: " Cigarettes really aren't that bad in moderation. It's chain smoking that kills."
REALLY longhao??? Smoking will kill ONE BILLION people in this century. In the US, it accounts for more deaths per year than drug overdoses, AIDS, and car accidents combined.
Your combined ignorance of the true fatal nature of smoking and how reprehensible Big Tobacco is for looking for other (underaged) markets, reinforces the fact that THIS IS INDEED NEWS.

Do you feel the same way against people that drink and drive? Where is the hatred for that? My smoking on the whole affects me. I don't smoke around my grandkids or others that don't like it, but drunk drivers do not have the same consideration when they get on the road. I hate drunks so you know what? I stay out of bars, I don't drink and I don't hang out with people that do. What I don't do is vote for laws as extreme as the ones against smokers

I think this documentary is very interesting. Especially because there is a discussion now in the Netherlands about smoking prevention. Our Government thinks people should know the consequences of tobacco use and wont spent any more money over prevention nor cessation.
A member of the dutch parliament said in a debate: "when smokers quit, they live longer and costs for healthcare will rise over the longer term".Unfortunately we are not able to watch Current TV in the Netherlands.
Will there be a possibility to watch this documentary online? - 11 months ago

As a smoker I say "leave them alone" I am an adult and I know the dangers of smoking as I'm sure the people in the video do also. I have been made to feel like a leper for doing something that is legal and for my enjoyment and now you want to span out to other countries. Give it a rest for gods sake

Smokers are worse than lepers UNTIL all cigarette smokers go to their own little community like lepers and away from non-smokers I will pester the fuck out of them to quit poisoning the air around me and others! These people have low constitutions and no guts so they cant quit cigarettes, they are selfish cowards, that hurt and starve young children too

Sounds like you have issues other than my smoking to be such a hater. I think your hatred towards people that don't fit into what you feel is correct is for more poisonous than the small amount of smoke that I may blow in your direction. do you go after people whose cars spit out massive amounts of emissions with the same passion as you did me. I hope you have not passed on your lack of tolerance to your children.

And by the way, Starving a child because I smoke. Really? I have never starved a child to my knowledge and I did quit for 15yrs while I was raising my kids, I smoke because I LIKE IT, and it is my right to do it. I pay my own insurance and am highly educated, probably more so than you for that matter, and with people like you in our faces all the time it takes more guts these days to smoke than not, but it is also people like you that feel they have the right to tell me what is good for me that will keep me fighting against the extreme laws you try to invoke.

I dont think anyone is "spanning out", looks to me like there are activist groups forming there all on their own. But I do agree with leave them alone because the people there will have enough of their outright recock-u-lous marketing to young children, who unlike us genius adults are more easily encouraged.

This is stupid.... Fast food conglomerations meticulously target urban low income areas. Snack food brands directly target children, and women during their most viewed T.V programs . And today there is a diagnosed medicated prescription for everything with no studies for long term symptoms. Cigarettes actually aren't that bad in moderation; it's chain smoking that kills. How is it that no one knows that American trends good and bad catch on in other countries? You are in pretty bad shape if this is news.
