In 2010, Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller traveled to South Dakota to examine the statistic that one in three Native American women will be raped in her lifetime. In this clip, van Zeller gives an update to the case at the center of "Rape on the Reservation." More than a year later, Marquita's mother is still mourning her death.

    • I viewed the documentary "Rape on the reservation" for the first time last night. It was a stunning and hard to watch piece. I was struck by the interview with the young man who told about seeing his father hit and break his mother's jaw. He seemed to be impressed with this action performed by his father as if it were a feat to be admired. He also referred to "hunting" and "prey" in reference to attacks on women. I thought there was an under current of pride in his dialogue. It made me wonder... would he think it "manly" to drug a deer to unconsciousness and then approach and shot it in the head or cut off it's ears? Would it be an achievement to boast about? I wanted to ask him it he really thought it manly and pride worthy to overpower an unconscious woman and make a show out of taking advantage of her. If it is self-satisfying to use one's strength and power on the weak and vulnerable would he be proud and boastful to injure children and small animals? Women are sacred Vessels and living oracles. They bring life into the world. How have these men forgotten there role to protect and love women with kindness. Isn't that truly what being a real man is about?
