In "Under the Knife Abroad," "Vanguard" correspondent Adam Yamaguchi travels to India, Mexico and Barbados to investigate one industry flourishing in these tough economic times: medical tourism. Americans are increasingly being forced to seek medical care overseas, often life or death procedures, because they can't afford it here at home. Is healthcare America's next industry to be outsourced to foreign lands?

Watch the premiere of "Under the Knife Abroad," Monday, November 14 at 9/8c on Current TV.

"Vanguard" is Current TV's no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.

    • The concept of Medical Tourism may be a very legitimate and beneficial thing, but be advised that this industry is already being scammed by internet ripoff artists. All of you considering overseas medical procedures and ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU WHO MIGHT BE CONSIDERING A CAREER CHANGE INTO THIS FIELD, beware of a husband and wife team named Fred Siller (aka Frederico Gustavo) and Lorena Siller (aka Lerena Kay aka Lorena Ortiz aka Lorena K Stiekman aka Lorena Ortiz-Siller) that is operating an internet scam called the New Life Medical Tourism Group.

Their angle in this is they try to recruit you as an agent who sells medical tourism services usually performed in Colombia or Panama. For just $595.00 they provide you all of the training materials, brochures, business cards and will provide you with all of the leads you will supposedly need to get started earning an 8% commission on all of your sales. There is only one catch......Fred (Frederico) and Lorena are not connected with any doctors or hospitals and have never worked in the medical field. They are internet scam artists operating out of a Goin Postal mailbox they rent in Fort Pierce, FL.

The New Life Medical Tourism Group is just one of a half-dozen internet scams the run, including Cruise2Cash, Profit with Fred, Hand of Heaven, Frelo Latin Wear and others. In short, if you send them any money you will never see it again and will probably never hear from the Sillers again.

    • tverdell, how much do you think the nurses, custodians, operating room techs, therapist, etcc... make in india. health care is a very labor intensive endeavor. when labor costs in the states decrease to those in india, we will be saved. how many people in india have $8,000 to pay for a hip replacement? that is what i want to know. wikipedia has per capita income in india for 2011 about $1,200. someone in india would have to save all their money for over 7 years to pay for the total hip replacement.

    • also, i can assure you, the young woman with the ankle injury did not receive great care in mexico. her xrays demonstrate arthritis most likely a result of the trauma. removing those plates and screws will not restore her ankle joint and she was told her ankle may still hurt, which i imagine she was told in the states. her other main concern was the infection in her forearm that flares up every time she stops the bactrim. she was told the risk of bone growing across the two bones in her forearm was too high so the surgeon refused to remove those screws and plates. i am fairly certain the standard of care in the states is to remove such hardware from infected bone once the fractures have healed, which they were. guess she will just have to keep taking the bactrim, forever. or she can travel back to mexico for follow up.

    • arrowwind, just to inform you. the federal government has new criteria tied to medicare reimbursements, one of which is prescribing medications. for that criteria, a physician must prescribe at least 30 percent of their patients a new prescription (as i understand it). people themselves have several very simple ways to prevent many diseases: eat right, exercise, dont smoke, dont drink, dont do drugs.

    • I was very moved by this story. I too am drowning in medical debt due to multiple chronic illness. I will never have the "American Dream", because of the medical debt, I will never qualify for a mortgage or auto loan. I have found a clinic that charges on a sliding scale and I take whatever medication they happen to have samples of for treatment. I am extremely grateful for the samples but this means I am constantly dealing with side effects of stopping and starting medications. I pray that documentaries like this will help to bring about change to the American medical system. Thank you for giving us a voice.

    • We have allowed the medical system to be motivated by greed and extravagance. Also the doctors still don't know how to cure disease. One drug after another, Drugs kill. .. sometimes with a very slow painful death as with statin drugs. Some great medical care can be found in Costa Rica and Columbia also...

    • Health care in the US is an embarrassment we have some of the best facilities & doctors in the world but how much longer is the US public going top tolerate a pay for play system that puts profit before people According to the world health organization we rank 37th in the world for health care just below Slovenia

I have gone overseas and had great medical care for the fraction of the cost. I would do it in a minute. I know great doctors in India and would like to help you. You can get a hip replacement from around 7000.00 - 10,000.00 depending on hip.
      Sincerely, snowbunee

    • Just watched this with my family last night.

So the consumer is beginning to outsource our doctors and hospitals.
As more Americans do this, the market should force our own health care industry to be inline with other countries.

    • Excellent coverage Adam. This is the future of healthcare as healthcare has become standardized globally in respect to quality and service.
PlanetHospital.com should also be recognized for the patients they helped in this documentary. Rudy Rupak, the founder of PlanetHospital.com, has helped hundreds of patients obtain the quality medical care they need at affordable prices.
In additional, they are now a public entity under Global Health Voyager (globalhealthvoyager.com) with the ticker symbol GLHV. They are an excellent resource and opportunity within the emerging medical tourism industry.

    • Adam, Awesome again as usual.. Your show is one of the best on TV. This stuff just need to get to the public some how. Here in PSL, Florida via Comcast you are on Channel 107. That has to bought as an added package. Same thing with Oprah channel 103, that is why she is losing ! Anyway that this could get to public TV, maybe start with the old shows.

I cant thank you enough for putting this on TV. You take me around the world without leaving my house. I just cant believe there is not a thousand comments already on this page. Got to get a Vanguard site. Current TV is great too, and I like their site. I just cant get over when I try to have conversations about things like this with my overly conservative southern relatives (thank god I am from Delaware/Ohio). They think I am lying about this show and deadliest Journeys. They are in the belief that the whole world lives like the southern baptist, and if you don't, your wrong.... They all have the George Bush bumper sticke that says " miss me yet" I am in a Living hell.. LOL

      Take care and thanks again

    • Vanguard rocks! Good job Adam. This should be required viewing for every member of congress opposing health care reform. What a tragedy America's health care system has become.

    • I know too much about this and it's actually happening in my own home. My family is living this nightmare and it's killing my husband at this very moment. we worked good jobs, had medical coverage, got sick took sick leave and lost our medical benefits - how ironic is it that you loose your medical benefits when you are most in need of them ? America has a lost set of priorities that will soon become it's tipping point. 1% get ready because you are going to have to pay for all you did to the 99% - no doubt you already know it.
