Vanguard Update from Mariana: Uganda in pictures

Man on the street interviews in Kampala

A few kids playing football here in Kampala

Love the old Chinese bikes in Uganda. (Women aren't supposed to ride solo as it will take virginity.)

Birds in Uganda are the size of a 6th grade bully. And they'll steal your lunch too.

Wow, How much i envy Mariana. I love all the work she does and would love to visit all the places she does, as well as informing the public with unknown conflicts. I envy her even more since she is in Uganda where the anti-gay legislation debate is going down. My hopes for myself in the future is to become a journalist like Mariana and uncover these stories and inform the public.
Mariana van Zeller is such an inspiration.

Love the Chinese bikes! Last time I was in Kampala we also saw a few bikes that had originally been part of a Danish bike sharing program in Copenhagen. Wonder how they made it to Uganda...keep an eye out!

This mostly uneducated country is a good example of why education is the most important part of life. An uneducated public is gullible to the propaganda of the government. That's why the US government keeps cutting our education funding.

What up! I asked around and - with 99.9% certainty - it is a SONY A1U with a wide angle lens adapter.
When Darren gets back from Africa, I will make sure to find out the remaining 0.1% for you.
Cheers,

Of course! I was pretty shocked that the A1U runs under $2000. Really makes you think about the endless possibilities for inspired, adventurous and young (at heart) journalists. Cheers!

we're definitely looking to bring back live chats this season -- not sure yet if they'll be during the show (like we did sometimes) or right after... or maybe just start getting whoever is in the office together for a weekly session if there's enough interest.

Hehehe--girls and women aren't supposed to ride solo as it will take virginity--but riding somewhere with a man and possibly parking the bike for a few minutes is perfectly safe for virgins? No wonder the government is so offended by the idea of people having gay sex--they can't even figure out the basics of heterosexuality.
That and they share Sarah Palin and the rest of the teabaggers complete lack of understanding of irony and sarcasm and satire because "riding solo" can be fun and doesn't necessarily take your virginity--(unless of course your vibrator is over about 6 inches long).
