Tutu: In Africa, Human Rights Moving "Backward"

When we were in Uganda we often heard the refrain that it is "un-African" to be gay, and that homosexuality was an import from a Western world that had broken its covenant with God. These are the central arguments that religious and political leaders in Uganda are using to push through legislation that would make homosexuality illegal -- presumably more illegal than it is under the long-existing legislation that already forbids it.
But in Friday’s Washington Post, one of Africa’s leading religious leaders, Desmond Tutu, takes on both questions. "A wave of hate is spreading across my beloved continent," he writes.
“Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people are part of so many families. They are part of the human family. They are part of God's family. And of course they are part of the African family.”
There are many, including members of Tutu’s own denomination who we met in Uganda, who would take issue with him.
But while arguing that it is un-Christian to persecute gays in his op-ed, Tutu raises an important point: Uganda is far from the only African country where it is dangerous to be openly gay or for that matter, where homosexuality is illegal. In fact, 40 of the 53 nations in Africa have laws on the books making homosexuality illegal. Tutu's home country of South Africa is the only one to allow any form of same-sex marriage.
So while much talk has centered on the proposed "Anti-Homosexuality Bill" in Uganda, the entire continent of Africa is engrossed in the debate. And, as we see in examples like the Prop 8 controversy in my adopted home state of California, so are we.
Read Tutu's full op-ed here, and learn more about the new gay rights battle ground in this piece from Foreign Policy.

What's that supposed to mean? Its simple, you are either for or against killing gays. Civilized or not, these are people who are being persecuted. If you are going to politicize it then I can only say that you are a cynic...
Even conservatives should be against this...

i love how people dont understand christianity and its teachings about gays(especially christians).
yes, the christian bible says homosexuality is a sin.
it also says, to take care of the sick and sinners(children, widows and the poor as well), not ban them or persecute them. "you don't heal the healthy"
this is why i, for the most part, can't stand most "christian" churches, they're backasswards

After World War two we as a nation said never again regarding the genocide of the jews, but we did not follow through. Cambodia, millions died at the hands of Pol Pot, Uganda under Idi Amin millions more died, Now the Congo millions have died. We are not true to our word, morals and promises as a nation. We invaded Iraq for oil not to free the oppressed. Credibility is everything in life and as I view it from a distance standing in someone elses shoes. The United States is full of shit.

Civil rights have been regressing around the world. Abusive regimes and governments are becoming more entrenched and states, hiding behind the idea of "state sovereignty," are being justified in their human rights abuses. I feel sorry for the LGBT people of Uganda.
You know what the most pathetic thing is? That there are many leaders who are willing to turn a blind eye to much of this.
The United States is one of the few countries that regularly stands up for human rights abuses all around the world, but we don't count, because we are immediately labeled "imperialists" and we are accused of intervening in states' sovereignty.
When the world stays silent, who suffers? The people inside. They have to live under the abuse, and the message the world sends is, "Its right that you are being oppressed, because your government is legitimate" (whether it was elected into office or not).
World leaders today need the balls (or "cojones") to denounce abuses. Lula of Brazil is one of the ones who doesn't have them because they get in the way of his country's business interests. I remember when all Latin Americans denounced Pinochet and his dictatorship... where is the same outrage when it comes to Cuba? It is sad how we have been abandoned by our fellow Latin Americans.
People of Uganda, Burma, North Korea, and everywhere where there is oppression, I offer my solidarity with you.

You are correct, "Urban"! The autocratic 3rd and 4th World Nations hide behind a litany of "sovereignity", to justify their treatment of their citizens. I guess it also occurs in the G-7 Nations, also. However, it is not as blatantly obvious.

Known rapists receive amnesty; women who have been abused, gang raped, etc. are shunned and receive no justice. Yet, a man can be imprisoned for life or put to death for having consentual sex with another in his own home? I understand your point Dersex about the right to have your own culture and sovereign government, but non-acceptance or disgust and human rights violations are a two different things. If African-Americans were being put to death in the United States, I would hope England, Spain, Uganda, somebody would try to help us.

We have to take account that Africa was indoctrinated with religion during colonization and the effect is still visible in the culture of contemporary africa. On top of the progressive culture changes of the west happened because of technology ya know printing presses, radio, tvs. I hate to burst some bubbles but only some major cities in africa can communicate and spread new ideas, theories, and initiate social changes. So cut him some slack. I propose a modernizing of africa is the only way to speed things up, dubai is a slow example of the uneasy alliance of religion and modernization. Yes you can go to jail for say umm, holding hands with an unmarried woman, but trust me dubai will change, they can't lock up the ceos of western nations who pretty much run the damn place, in a plutocratic sort of way i figure. I'm not saying this to condone him, but you should always examine the root of the matter before going into action mode. No offense but I think that has a lot to do with american schooling (kids are taught to act, and not reflect on the problems). Now Dersex for you,
Where in africa do you hail from? I did some time in french africa (Algeria - cameroon, cote d'ivoir), with the exception of congo for safety reasons. I was 13 at the time so I'm not the expert, but I was shocked that after all the efforts to remove the colonial influence, the natives took the european religion as their own. Why? Why even knowing now more and more europeans today are becoming atheist? They rejected their own religion they brought to africa, but unless you're muslim then thats a whole another story. I'm curious

homosexuality is widely unaccepted in Africa, its a well known fact!
i know i am African. the west has and will always be unwilling to accept that we are not ready for homosexuality to be accepted. my parents still don't accept it, and cant stand the open acceptance that homosexuals receive. we don't believe in that and we aren't gonna start anytime soon no matter what the scrutiny .so back off our culture and let us deal with our own issues as we do not involve ourselves in your legislation...do we!!? - 1 year ago

So back off your culture? Well that's funny, when we send food aid your way and AIDS medications, do you tell those pesky americans to back off then?
Just as I can't watch someone starve, I can't watch someone be killed or imprisoned for someone else's intolerance and ridiculous laws/beliefs.

You are correct my friend. Homosexuality, if my experience, is generally ignored in Nigeria. It of course exists, but is not spoken of, nor made an issue. My cook is definetly a homosexual, if not a woman trapped in a man's body, and one of my close girl friends is a well known Port Harcourt lesbian. However, life goes on and we can all socialise and laugh at the differences in our personalities. I am opposed to laws making homosexuality illegal, as it could shortly lead to mob violence and murders.

Ugandans abuse the rights and go so far as attack homosexuals, then they are simply destroying the contribution of members of their society.

Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out... and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel.... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man" - with his mouth. ~Mark Twain

If AIDS (not aides, people beat their aides, they aren't killed by them) was strictly a gay disease, it would still be called GRID (gay related immune deficiency) not auto-immune deficiency syndrome or something like that. Why don't you go ahead and admit what you're really thinking? That talking snake turned Eve into a real prude so Adam fucked a monkey, then his 2 sons and started the aids epidemic. Come on and say it: it's the devil's master plan to corrupt the human race, and Jesus wants them all to die or he would cure them with his immaculate self.

(1) "Aides" are assistants or helpers. AIDS is the disease you're referring to
(2) "The victims are mostly Christians right?"- Answer: No. You're referring to the recent attacks in Nigeria, a totally separate country. Africa is a Continent. Also, within that particular conflict, muslims were retaliating against far deadlier previous attack by Christians (not that it matters as both attacks were brutal, unjustified, and unfortunately based upon religion which is ridiculous.)
(3) WTF does Obama have anything to do with this?
(4) How on Earth is South Africa, once again A WHOLE DIFFERENT country under Nelson Mandela, Communism?? I love how you people (yes I said it! "you people", ie. ignorant teabaggers) have learned a few terms like "socialism" and "communism" and throw them around without any idea of their meaning, it really cracks me up.
(5) The human rights violations in Uganda and many parts of Africa are awful. Many muslims are violent. Many Christians are violent. Just so you know though, the first documented instance of people cutting of arms, etc with machetes in Africa was under the command of King Leopold of Belgium. He was exploiting Africans just as the "white devils" you mentioned did who made slaves and second class citizens of people in their own country during apartheid (look it up). You've mentioned nothing about Uganda here except for show your ignorance. Read a book, and listen to someone other than Glenn Beck please. - 1 year ago
