Vanguard First Look: Mariana in South Dakota

MarianaVanZeller
I went to South Dakota to investigate a story about women, justice and injustice in Indian country. But one of the great parts of my job is that sometimes in the middle very serious and stressful situations we are still allowed to witness powerful cultural celebrations--like this pow-wow practiced by the Lakota Indians on the Rosebud reservation.

This is only one part of a much bigger story that you'll see in the new season of Vanguard. In April, I'll return to the South Dakota to finish shooting.

You can follow my journey at http://twitter.com/MarianaVZ.

Vanguard is Current TV's original documentary series. Led by correspondents Mariana van Zeller, Christof Putzel, Adam Yamaguchi and Kaj Larsen, Vanguard features enterprising reports from around the globe. It airs every Wednesday at 10pm on Current TV.

I put this article up to highlight the plight of the Lakota and all Native Americans on Alex White Plume the day before this was posted. Alex White Plume is fighting for a sustainable farming future for the Lakota, who are Native Americans. He has been on the radio for the last two weeks discussing problems regarding his tribe on KRXA am 540 on the show "What's Up?" with Lynne and Michael Heller. I hope this brings more attention to the sorry conditions that the government has continued to push onto the Indigenous Peoples - keep it up Vanguard!

    • Thank you for reporting about Native American culture, Mariana. This definitely caught my attention. I will watch it.

I am curious thought, why investigative story is specifically about women/justice/injustice in Indian country? Why excluding men?
