On Veterans Day
On this Veterans Day, I want to give a shout out to Mike Elliott. I first heard about Mike when he met my dad in Iraq. My dad was covering the start of the Iraq War as a reporter and met Mike while embedded with his Marine unit. I first made contact with Mike when he got home from his tour and in April of 2006, I visited him in Montana. I was doing a story about young vets and the issues they deal with when they return home from war and Mike invited me up to visit him. Mike was experiencing a lot of the textbook issues that so many vets deal with. He had trouble with basic tasks like sleeping (nightmares) and driving (afraid of IEDs on the Montana freeways). Mike was part of the first generation of troops coming back after their first tour in Iraq and he agreed to let us film his struggle.

I like to check-in with Mike every few months to see how he’s doing. He’s married, owns a home and lives the Montana life. He’s come a long way since I first met him and I know his story has inspired many vets dealing with similar issues. Mike, I’m thinking about you on this Veterans Day.
