the sad thing is, people have no idea about the spiritual aspect of this river; of any of the Holy Rivers. people just see this and go yuck, poo, a river, how sad, yadda yadda. but what they don't realize is that what is happening here would be the same as spitting in a church, or doing the same such activity in a masque, or temple, or any such religous site. far from it that things like this could very well spiritually contribute to major hurricanes, droughts, and other natural water-related disasters. it is so sad how people treat the Hindu religion, merely because it is, at first different from other religions. One of the many misconceptions about them worshipping many Gods; this is not true. Hinduism is monotheistic. Would people do such a thing as this to the Vatican? To Mecca? To other religious Holy Sites? This is yet another sad look at whats happening in our world today.

What the hell are you babbling about? It's Hindus that are shitting in their own river. It has nothing to do with religious discrepancies. It's called over population and lack of infrastructure. Next...

It's beyond disgusting. I read somewhere that in India at least 700million people don't have access to toilets. 700million people?!!!! That's more than twice the population of the USA

This POLLUTION is the direct result of international corporations trying to skirt the US environmental laws on the books, and simultaneously by the uneducated population that has left their hindu beliefs of the environment in the past in favor of survival at any cost.
My wife once said that there is no room to pass moral judgement on a population that is just trying to survive or feed a family. This was the argument she made when the US wanted some moral controls of the Indian population when distribution of condoms to control AIDS. It is sense less to say we are here to help you with your AIDS crisis if you change your behavior that is 100% human nature....The basic lack of environmental controls, lack of minimum wage, lack of work condition rules, lack of regulations of any kind are the reason we have US corporations operating in other countries.
Think about it,...if Mexico voted a minimum wage tomorrow that was anywhere close to half the US minimum wage,...corporations would pack up, move elsewhere..where they can stand on the backs of the poor, and continue their perpetual poverty. - 2 years ago

While the subject matter is important i.e. reporting on a heavily polluted river, this clip was juvenile. We all know what shit looks and smells like. It would have been more interesting to tell us why there is so much shit in the area. Is there a shortage of sanitary facilities or sewer treatment plants? Are the people so poor that this is their only option? If the final edited story explains these things good, but this clip does nothing to enhance your credentials as professional journalists.

I NEVER drink tap water because it is polluted with Flouride. It leads to weight gain and migraines. Some pharmecautical company is not going to give up that client (USA) too easily. Think of the revenue loss.

loveminx I was surprised there are people in the USA that still drink tap water. It has chlorine in it too, not just fluoride. Yet they complain about us buying bottled water.

It is a combination of many things, and this video shows a clear dichotomy between industrialization and custom. People still wash clothes and bathe in this river because one, for some it is religious custom, and two, it is all they have... which goes back to government inadequacy and corruption as well as the dam in Haryana that takes much freshwater from this area making it stagnant. The people there had joined just months ago to try to clean this river, but again, government is turning a blind eye to this environmental catastrophe.

It's about lack of infrastructure, government inadequacies and corruption which include collusion with industrial polluters, and the illegal dam causing this pollution downstream near new Delhi.

JanforGore:
How can the government build a, as you call it, "illegal dam" if it were truly illegal ?? Are you also now implying that the government is criminal ? Because, last I heard, the Indian judicial system is independent of its legislature and executive branches and has in the past stopped the government from building other projects that overly damages the environment or the local inhabitants if there was sufficient cause. If feces were the only pollutants, it would be the least of that river's worries then the Indian government wouldn't have the need to spend more than a $1 billion so far on the clean up of the rivers.
It is easy to criticize and condemn the government, the system, the people and the country for the problem, any fool can do that. The real challenge is presenting real solutions, which none of these sanctimonious environmental groups or international activists have been able to do! - 1 year ago

But what about all the brouhaha about Pepsi or Coca-Cola polluting the water where they had their plants? These people pollute their own drinking water much worse than any industrialized country does. Yet everyone gets down on companies like those mentioned above. It's an internal problem.

Pollutants aren't necessarily equal even though they're all called pollutants. There's a difference between biological crap and chemicals polluting the water. Big difference.
After all, just because you take a crap in your toilet doesn't give your local chemical plant to dump in a few gallons of toxic waste, does it?

Funny, I don't recall saying that. Maybe it's because I never did!
And anyway, the people living in India don't have the means to shit somewhere else. There's no such thing as public washrooms for the most part. Where else would they shit?
That's their life, and frankly, they have more important things to worry about. You see, the people who do this, they're dirt poor, probably live in shanty homes, if they even have a house at all. They have no running water, no facilities, and nothing at all surrounding them that has a promise of something better.
Trust me, I have a clue.

You're hilarious! They have more important things to worry about, than polluting rivers that are several miles long and turning them into toxic waste dumps, basically causing a suicidal and homicidal environment because of their shit and toxic industrial waste???? And they have the right to procreate like flies to the tune of 1billion people in their country, yet they didn't think that public toilets might be an important and necessary part of their infrastructure? You trying to justify, excuse and rationalize their behavior is utterly ridiculous and disgusting...
That would be like if we had oil spills in the USA and no one made any effort whatsoever to clean them up.

QuestionGeek:
NO, you are Hillarious!
Yes, they have a right to procreate like flies, or rabbits or even human beings without needing YOUR permission or blessing! How dare you question how and when they procreate ? Are you feeding them ? Are you taking care of them ? They can do what ever they damn well please in their own country. They don't need your permission or your condescending approval to live the way they wish to do so! India is a self sufficient country and has been for a LONG time been able to produce enough food to feed its entire populace. Unless you want to clean that river up or pay to get it done, all these condescending comments here are worth less than the feces that the OP video showed!
As for public toilets being some sort of magic remedy to the situation, like how Europe has public toilets- where they charge 1 euro every time you use it? How do you think people in India who can't afford proper toilets would benefit from a public toilet that requires money to use it ?? Thats simply daft! If even European countries can't provide their citizens with free public toilets how do you suppose, a country like India would provide 1 billion people free public toilets ??The worst part about your comment is the absolute disconnect with reality or even common sense as to the real situation in India to spew such utopian nonsense about environmentalism and public toilets being a priority for Infrastructure in India. Human beings have been shitting long before they invented the commode, so some villagers and urchins shitting in some corner is not a NATIONAL priority when there are people starving and there isn't enough electricity being generated for pumping water or lighting homes.
