What Prop 8 Supporter Lou Engle Really Said in Uganda

Watch a special encore of Vanguard's "Missionaries of Hate" on Wednesday, June 23 at 10/9c.

In March 2009, three American evangelicals traveled to Uganda to headline an anti-gay conference. Soon after, legislation was proposed that would make being gay punishable by life in prison or, in some cases, death. The anti-homosexuality bill drew international condemnation, with both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama weighing in.

And while many American evangelicals released statements criticizing the bill after the controversy erupted, at least one of them traveled to Uganda in person. In May, Lou Engle, founder of TheCall Ministry and a chief campaigner for Proposition 8, the measure that outlaws same sex marriage in California, traveled to the east African nation to headline a prayer event.

Before he left for Uganda, Engle sent out a press release saying that he was not going there to promote the anti-homosexuality bill. Weeks after returning, Engle sent out another press release voicing his regret that the bill was promoted at TheCall Uganda event and says that it happened after he had left.

As we show in Vanguard's "Missionaries of Hate," during TheCall Uganda, Engle surrounded himself with some of the key backers of Uganda's anti-gay legislation, including Pastor Julius Oyet, Minister of Ethics and Integrity Nsaba Buturo and the bill's author, MP David Bahati.

Others have already pointed out how Oyet actually spoke in support of the bill before Engle with Buturo following just after. We showed a bit of what Engle said in our documentary, but many have been wondering what else he said during his sermon at the prayer event.

Here's a bit more of the man in his own words:

    • this is a good man and he has no hate in his heart towards homosexuals, only love... i've heard him speak several times and that is the greatest thing that comes across in everything he says... many times the media is biased and portrays people as they wish...

    • Why didn't Mariana Van Zeller point out heterosexual sex can be EVERY bit as perverse and degenerate as what was being attributed to the gays? Also, why didn't anyone call out the Ugandan Parliamentary gay bigots and suggest their bill SHOULD EQUALLY PUNISH heterosexual persons who engage in similar depraved behavior with the opposite sex? It appears as though the Ugandan Parliament and the greater part of the Ugandan population are acting like mental midgets and moral pygmies and not the devout Christians they profess to be! They should read Matt 15:8 and Isa 29:13 as should Scott Lively and Lou Engle. They all have forgotten the TWO GREATEST COMMANDMENTS from Jesus! If churches were only for the sinless and perfect, they would all be empty! Shame on these degenerate gay bashers and self-righteous false Christians! Father forgive them all for they truly know not thy true Gospel of forgiveness! I am praying for all of Uganda to repent of their hatreds, forsake them, and replace them only with the pure love of Christ of which the Bible bears witness and record; Amen!

    • I'd like to start off by congratulating Mariana VanZeller for such needed documentary for our gay communities even though is so sad how things are happening in our world it is important to talk about this issues in society. For all christian folks I recommend you visit the following website... http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_bibi.htm and go over the passages in the bible where gays are supposedly condemned, I am christian and gay and believe there is a human error in translation on this matter that brings condemnation imposed by confused and prejudice christians. This has been going on from century after century contaminating our world with ignorance and passed on prejudice that only promotes violence and sometimes even murder justifying it with "moral" excuses and even scripture. What a blasphemy! Good luck for all on their way of seeing either salvation or a hot inferno in what you read and comprehend from the sacred bible.

    • The information disclosed in the "Missionaries of Hate" documentary depicts the epitome of insidious inhumanity and brutality that can be perpetrated against any group of human beings.

    • I NEVER CAN UNDERSTAND WHY CHRISTIANS WHO SAY THAT THEY BELIEVE THAT BEING GAY OR HOMOSEXUAL IS WRONG, IMMORAL, OR SINFUL, AND THAT WE CERTAINLY DON'T DESERVE MARRIAGE AND BARELY DESERVE EQUAL RIGHTS AS A CITIZEN. BECAUSE , APPARENTLY, THEY DON'T REALIZE THAT NOT EVERYBODY'S CHRISTIAN, AND THEREFORE DOESN'T BELIEVE IN YOUR WAY OF THINKING. SOME OF US DON'T BELIEVE THE BIBLE IS A BOOK OF HISTORY, BUT RATHER, A BIT OF A LARGE COLLECTION OF WRITINGS BY PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWED A PROPHET THAT DIED MANY HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE THEY WROTE THE LETTERS, AND BOOKS THAT NOW COMPRISE THE "BIBLE". WHY DO THEY SAY THERE IS THIS "GAY AGENDA"??? IT'S SO RIDICULOUS, I MEAN, COME ON! DOES HE THINK ALL US GAYS GET TOGETHER IN SOME SECRET MEETINGS UNDERGROUND SOMEWHERE, AND PLAN TO OVERTHROW THE COUNTRY, AND "TURN" EVERYONE GAY?!?! FOR REAL????? I'M JUST STUNNED BY THIS MAN'S IGNORANCE, HATRED, AND HIS AGENDA TO GET PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THIS LOAD OF GARBAGE HE'S SELLING!! HE'S THE ONE GOING AROUND THE WORLD PREACHING ABOUT THIS CRAP! THERE HAS NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF TIME EVER BEEN AN INSTANCE WHERE SOMEONE HAS EVER ONCE GONE AROUND ON A WORLD TOUR, TO PROMOTE "BEING GAY AS A LIFESTYLE CHOICE", OR EVEN TO "PROMOTE GAY SEX, AND PROMISCUITY". THERE IS NO AGENDA EXCEPT HIS!!! HE'S NO BETTER THAN HITLER, TRYING TO GO AROUND HAVING GAYS HANGED AND KILLED IN COUNTRIES THAT STILL ALLOW IT, SUCH AS UGANDA. HE IS A SICK PSYCHOPATH, AND I PRAY THAT HE EITHER SEES THE ERROR OF HIS WAYS IMMEDIATELY, OR THAT HE IS STOPPED BEFORE SOMEONE DIES DUE TO HIS HATRED OF A CERTAIN GROUP OF PEOPLE...

    • I appreciate to be able to see examples, like this episode, of what happens when religion and politics are foolishly mixed. Haven’t we learned anything from history? A little over 200 years ago Thomas Jefferson warned us about what happens when religion and politics mix.

    • And why are we complaining about Islam? Doesn't Islam talks about love too? but there are crazy people that choose to use it in order to promote hate. That is exactly what these "pastors" are doing with Christianity! This is their Jihad. This is nuts! love, love, love, love is the answer.

    • I went to a Call event in 2007. I used to be a follower of Engle's, along with a number of my friends. I fasted and prayed for 2 days for that particular event, drinking nothing but water in 100+ degrees in an open stadium.

They continue to follow him, but I stopped a while ago. A video like this, though, breaks my heart. I can't believe I used to pray for the success of a hateful movement like this. I feel duped.

I have met this man several times, I even lived with his family for a week, and he is anything but evil. He respects human life above any "anti-gay" agenda, and he would never intentionally promote a death sentence for homosexuals. He has spent years peacefully protesting for the protection of unborn children that most people don't consider human life.

If your definition of evil includes anyone who thinks homosexuality is immoral, then I humbly ask you to reconsider your view. You can disagree with someone without hating them. I believe premarital sex is immoral, but I don't hate 'fornicators'. Why can't I say homosexuality is immoral without being accused of being a hateful/evil person?

quit trying to start a useless fight. your "christian" ethic isn't the subject here. it's the way you go about promoting this ethic- i.e. aligning with a political statement that is quite plainly anti-gospel.

NOT SURE this isnt about thinking homosexuality is immoral or not, if you are truly a man of god than you believe that it is ONLY Gods right to judge a man based on his decisions, and by preaching that its a humans duty to take away the rights of others and jail someone based on what only you believe than you are preaching hate period. What if muslims were allowed to make laws on what they believed, than i promise you some of your rights would be taken away and you would maybe realize how hypocritical this all is. If you believe that homsexuality is immoral than do the christian thing and love your neighbor as yourself, dont force away their rights.. This man may not be pure evil, but he preaches evil and for that he is much of a sinner as anyone else...

I too have met Engle, and he's humble:) but I was just confused at the fact that the call people would choose to do a call in Uganda during the proposal of this new law? The law doesn't really demonstrate God's heart for humanity...

    • I agree. The Ugandans that were talking about lynching and otherwise killing homosexuals are definitely the ones spreading hate. Although the wouldn't be the first country to pass or enforce strict anti-gay laws. I was disappointed that there was no mention of countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq or Saudi Arabia. All of which have a much more violent approach to the gay issue, and have been that way for several hundred years. Yet, Saudi Arabia is a dessert oasis in most American's eyes, and almost idolized by our government and the rest of the world. If you are an outed gay there, you're publicly beheaded! But that's ok. It's a Muslim nation. It's their law by faith. But we're shocked and outraged when a Christian nation tries to do something less extreme?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe the next time Vanguard is producing a documentary it should have more of a global perspective and not such a narrow focus. Even five minuets addressing other nations' views on homosexuality, religious or not, would have brought this video closer to full circle.
