Continuing the Story: Helping Injured Migrants in Mexico
Five years ago, Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller traveled to Mexico to report on "The Death Train," a free but dangerous freighter that migrants board in an attempt to reach the US. During her trip she visited the Albergue Jesús el Buen Pastor del Pobre y el Migrante shelter in Tapachula, Mexico.
This center serves as a home for badly injured migrants, many of whom have lost an arm or a leg. The center gives them a chance to physically and emotionally heal themselves at a time when their hopes of a better life have been crushed.
Since "Death Train" has aired on Current, a number of people have written in asking for more information about the center, and what can be done to help the efforts to care for those who have been injured in their attempts to reach the border.

So we asked the shelter's founder and director, Olga Sánchez Martínez, and she said these were the center's goals for the new year:
1. Build a gym for exercise and physical therapy.
2. Continue with breadmaking and dressmaking workshops so people can train for new vocations.
3. Start a carpentry skills workshop.
4. Fix the leaky ceilings in the women’s bedrooms.
5. Build a fence to keep robbers away.
For those interested in helping the shelter or finding out more, you can visit their website.

There has recently been a collaboration between Amnesty, Mark Silver and Gael Garcia Bernal about this called The Invisibles about this same subject.
You can view the report by Amnesty here:

In such moments, you feel like something's missing, something's wrong in your world. Like perhaps there's something you haven't done, or someone you don't know but are supposed to...
At times you feel you have found it, perhaps in a love relationship, but that feeling never seems to last. Every relationship, even good ones, leave you with this hole in your heart.
Something isn't right, but you can't find it or fix it. So you keep looking, trying things...
