After the Women’s World Cup concludes Sunday with a final match between the U.S. and Japan, the spotlight will turn to Rio de Janeiro. In 2014, Rio will host the men’s FIFA World Cup -- and it is an even brighter spotlight. The 2010 World Cup in South Africa garnered 3.2 billion viewers, from every country in the world -- that means 46.4 percent of the global population tuned in.
In "City of God, Guns & Gangs," "Vanguard" explores how Rio de Janeiro is now truly racing against the clock to make the city safe before millions of tourists show up for both the World Cup and then the 2016 Olympics, two of the world's biggest events.
However, as we witnessed first-hand, Rio is still one of the most dangerous cities on Earth, full of gangs, guns, drugs and shootouts -- and authorities have a long way to go before they can declare that the public security of the city is up to par for both visitors and residents alike.
Watch a trailer for "City of God, Guns & Gangs" and tune in Wednesday, July 20 at 9/8c to see the episode on Current TV.
