‘I’m not sorry that I shot him, but I am sorry that I had to’

In this excerpt from “Vanguard,” correspondent Christof Putzel talks to Jay Lewis, an IRS employee who shot at a man who he says caused a car accident and then assaulted him. But because Iowa has no “stand your ground” law that would pre-empt a jury trial, Lewis was held for four months before quickly being found not guilty and released. Christof asks, “Do you wish you’d killed him?” and Lewis says, with difficulty, “I’m not sorry that I shot him, but I am sorry that I had to.”
