Aurora shooting survivor Stephen Barton, now a policy and outreach assistant with the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition, talks to “Viewpoint” host Eliot Spitzer about why he decided to postpone a Fulbright scholarship to spend a year advocating for gun control.
Speaking of the shooting, Barton says: “It was probably the worst moment of my life, and I’m hoping to turn it into something that is positive and empowering.” Of gun control, he notes, “There are plenty of measures that are worth looking at. But … I would say the lowest-hanging fruit politically is universal background checks. Right now, 40 percent of guns sold in this country — under federal law, they don’t require a background check.”
